This looks like a great deal. I bought a HP 15.6" notebook (similar specs) around 2 years ago and it's still going strong. The main complaint I have with it is the fan noise, it's always running and it gets quite noisy. The screen is a little crappy as well but I mostly use a 24" monitor on it so don't care. If you add another 4GB ram and stick a 256 SSD drive in this then you will have a great computer.

    • Well, I bought a HP 2 years ago and it died last year, few days after warranty…
But well everyone was complaining about overheating for the 1st get core i.

  • Expired now? What's up with JB lately?

    EDIT:

OK, saw that the deal runs for all of today.

  • Yeah direct link says expired, but is on main site.
    Not available online.

    • It's available online now.

  • I googled about this laptop and apparently there are some issues between switching from the intel graphics to the Radeon one.

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video-e-g-…

Maybe it is better to double check than sorry?

    • Problem seems to be based around OpenGL. I have an older Radeon HD 5650 with my switchable graphics setup and don't get this problem… at least not with the DirectX games I tend to play (haven't used OpenGL is a long time).

    • I had that problem on a hp dm4-3011tx.
In the bios I had to adjust a setting to disable the automatic graphics switching.

I was then able to switch graphic cards inside of windows, but with a blackscreen (so not seamlessly).

Minecraft is unplayable in the default mode. It took me months before I figured what was going on because you get no errors or indication that it isn't working other than bad performance.

  • nice price along for the CPU and GPU and the RAM itself.

  • 1366 x 768 Resolution

      Rather low PPI

  • Bought one last month, tried it for 2 days, got a refund (which was easy at Officeworks.)

Windows 8 is hideous, lacking all 3-d design clues to intuitive use.

I installed software to get past the tablet startup screen and to make windows explorer useful again, but W8 is still an unwieldy mess, unsuitable for accomplishing real multi-tasking productive work.

So, I thought, maybe I will install W7. I used W8's tool to resize the W8 partition from 400Gb to 50Gb. I did not create a new partition; I merely made part of the existing partition unused and available (and leaving 13Gb available space on the W8 partition.) On reboot W8 will not run claiming a missing file that must be fixed with install disk. (No install disk was included.)

After some research online, and trying all the options available on boot up, I set the BIOS to allow legacy boot to the optical drive.

Tried good boot disks for both vista and XP SP2.
Neither was acceptable to boot/run to the laptop's configuration, although both boot and run perfectly in my ASUS laptop.

I could be wrong, but it appears that MSFT (and maybe HP) don't want anyone to use an alternate OS to W8. IMO, that's the only hope they have of increasing market share for w8 past niche tablet use.
I do not care to be an unpaid consultant to either company, and I have better things to do with my time, so I returned the laptop for a full refund.

BTW, the ones at OW are white, and instantly look dirty when touched, even worse imo than black and shiny fingerprint magnets that are on other laptops.

(Since then I bought an HP m6 1010tx laptop with W7 from Shopping Express and it works ok.)

    • Thanks for the info. Hm… maybe the legacy boot option does not work properly.

Microsoft wants to push PC makers to enforce UEFI boot. This means when creating Windows 7 boot disc (or USB boot disc), it needs to be UEFI. That will also eliminate XP or below being "bootable" - dunno how to create an XP UEFI boot USB or disc.

      • Woody's newsletter guys have a solution, I think. It's simple. Something like holding shift when you close down. A web search should find it.

    • You need to flash the BIOS, check HP website for one to support other OS.
Better refund for computer like this, otherwise we all end up with computer like this.

If you installed a proper 3rd party start menu app like the startdock start8 then you could've easily got back Windows 7 experience on Windows 8. With start8, almost everything (i.e: desktop, start menu, task bar, task manager, alt+tab app switching ability etc..) looks and works exactly like Windows 7, only few places (i.e: login screen, Network and windows settings pages will have the modern UI).

      • I did try several start menu apps, and there is no third party app that replaces the 2D look of W8 with the 3D look of W7 or XP. The windows in W8 look like s#!t, and sometimes it's even hard to see where one window ends and the one under it begins. That's probably why the idiots at MSFT make W8 default to full screen everything, because it just isn't good enough graphically. W8 is not faster in any meaningful way, unless you compare one with SSD to one without SSD. Of course that is not the OS, but the hardware.
BTW, the HP that I bought (M6 1010TX) has an extra bay for a 1.8" MSSD drive, so you can buy the laptop cheaply and add a MSSD drive on sale later, and keep the existing large hard drive.

I do not fault the price of this laptop, but you have to be willing to give up the ability to productively use the computer because of the pathetic OS.

I cannot understand the complaints about Windows 8, use desktop mode, set all default opening functions to the standard windows functions and the only time you will see the tiles is boot up.
Its faster and has some functional improvements and many more inbuilt driver to the point of often not needing any extra drivers loaded on a new install.

      • +2

Agreed. I just tell people who don't like it to think of the metro interface as a full screen windows bar, which is essentially all I use it for.

  • Price error? Showing $788 to me now at 9:54 am.

    • Please click on the picture.. the link from OfficeWorks is for price match.

      • I did click JB's link, but now it's back to $588, weird ~~

  • all good except windows8

    • +1

Start8 fixed my main complaint about Win8.

  • Well this laptop be ok for light gaming?

    • Very capable.. even heavier gaming. Mod, plz remove the neg as it was meant for the + vote.

      • FYI, you can revoke your own vote. Click the votes tab at the top of the page.

        • thanks

      • Thanks. Just picked one up from OW typing on it right now for $558.60. They only have white, hopefully it wont be too eye blinding at night with lights.

  • Pity about the screen res though.

  • Does it have USB 3.0? Or illuminated keyboard? What's battery life like?

  • Two different Price points. I'm thinking of whether to get this or the Acer Chromebook for 238. Any suggestions?

  • Got the price match at OW. First one in at 8:30 this morning.

  • just picked one up at OW. not i just gotta figure out if i need it!

    • Robotdad,

I checked OW online no stock. Did your local store have them?

      • Must be hiding!!! At least 6 SA OW stores had stock at 8am this morning.

        • my bad, checked again local stores have "limited stock"

  • ok so im thinking about getting it as my old laptop is about 4 years old now. I am thinking to ask the people at office works to let me use my ing 5% cash back offer on it with 4-5 transactions but thinking if anyone has done something similar to this? I have done it twice before but only by swiping the card twice.

    • just ask them to pay in 5 chunks

    • Shouldn't be any different than using 5 individual gift cards to pay for an item, so I'm sure it can be done quite easily.

      • Last time I got refused by OW staff and their manager at Fairy Meadow store, they insisted only accepting multiple payments from different cards. Had to go nearby Coles to get cole myer gift cards instead. They got nothing extra and I wasted time and petrol, makes no sense to me but seems their policy is like that. Get some giftcards ready before you go to avoid potential problem.

      • Can you buy 5x gift cards, then use them to pay?

        BRB, signing up for ING.

  • looks good

anyone planning on removing the hd and adding a ssd?

  • howmuch would the ssd cost? and someone commented that u can upgrade the ram so im thinking upgrade the ram and maybe get a ssd but does it have to be external or can u put one in to replace the normal one? im not a pc junkie

    • +1

The SSD's do cost more than regular 2.5" drive but they are worth it. Significant speed boost and less heat. HP normally have good access to the ram and drive locations. Just remember you need to make back-up disks of Windows8 software located in a separate partition in the drive.

    • +1

SSD's start at around $100 for 120-128gb about $180 for the 240-256gb ones. You pull the old one out and put the new one in, but you have to reload operating system or clone the old drive onto the new one.

  • I've had the higher end spec model of Macbook Air 2011 and I disliked it because of its heating issue and excessively loud fan sizes whilst watching my 1080p videos and using programs like Adobe Photoshop.

Is this laptop going to be the same?

Also, how well can it handle running battlefield 3? Haha

    thanks.

  • so this is my current laptop and was wondering if anyone could tell me howmuch better this is compared to the one on sale at the moment.

HP Pavilion DV5-1140TX Special Edition Entertainment Notebook
    C2D Processor T9400, 2.53 GHz 6 MB
    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512MB DX10
    4GB DDR2 Ram
    320GB 5400RPM HDD
    Dual Layer DVD/CD LightScribe burner
    15.4" WXGA High-Definition
Gigabit Lan, 56k modem, 1.3M Pixel Webcam, 5-in-1 Reader
    Wireless G/N

    • I have a similar laptop to yours. I chucked in an SSD and it's running much faster. Applications load 10 times quicker. I'm still happy with it. If you are gamer though maybe an I5 or an I7 with a better graphics card this is the way to go. If you are not a gamer, just internet browsing and so on I guess yours will do just fine.

      • im not sure how to put one in an old laptop….like how would it screw things around?

      • Very pertinent comments, Jase. My old laptop (ASUS X83vm) is also similar with P8400 and Geforce 9600M GS 1Gb.

  • is there anything better at around this price or a bit more? just looking for a laptop for basic use.

    cheers

  • Gee win8 is a dog to use. Downloaded the Classic Starter application for free. Got Chrome, VLC player.
Still no start button, but this will be back in Win8.1. Instead I'm pinning all my usual applications to the task bar.
You have to go into settings to stop MS from dumping you back into the Metro malady screen.

Google 'how to banish metro from windows 8 forever'

  • how is this one compared with the Samsung NP350V5C-S02AU?

  • Nice deal, laptops are so cheap these days.

    • -1

They've always been "cheap" if you know where to look. i.e ozbargain. This is a decent deal, the inspiron 17r for 899 was tempting a few weeks ago, but I have no use for a new laptop. My current one can play my games fine, LoL, Tf2, minecraft.

  • +1

So I spent the day playing with this (before passing it on to the in-Laws for whom it was intended).
I have mixed feelings about this lappy.
For a new and reasonably specced machine it was surprisingly laggy (to frozen) at times. Bootup and running of the first few programs took many minutes.
I managed to get rid of the lock-screen and make the control panel more accessible.
Annoyingly Bluetooth is enabled by default.
I was peeved about all the new integration with the Microsoft 'monetisation', but with a bit of effort I was able to set it up without making a Microsoft account. It still tried to shunt me onto Metro as often as possible and kept telling me there were Microsoft products that could do what I was trying to do even though I already had installed a program with that capacity. Going through the file association settings managed to kill off some of the metro-shunting stupidity.
The default video player could only play a small range of formats and wanted to stream this to my non-existent xbox.
The speakers were on the quiet side -in fact I think my phone is louder. I did not notice any benefit of the Lansing/Dolby setup.
The mouse pad was ok, but subject to the occasional jump.
The screen was bright with good colours, but had a limited viewing angle.
The 3 USB ports were only USB 2.0.
I didn't play any demanding games on it, but if played 720p video fine.
Overall it is a machine with some very good specs, but then skimps on screen res, usb speed and speakers. Still ok value for $558.

    • The laptop has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port. The 2 ports on the left are USB 3.0 ports (if you look at the symbol next to the ports carefully, you can see SS). I had a look at those ports physically at an OW store and they are USB 3.0 ports - they are just not blue in colour). My mate was with me at the time and he did remind me that USB 3.0 ports don't have to be blue.

The "laggy" part of the laptop is the hard drive. That's to be expected. Windows 8 swiping gesture make take a bit of time to get used to. The ethernet port is only 10/100 (which was a bit odd considered how cheap gigabit ethernet chipset is nowadays).

Thanks for the review, especially the thoughts on Win8… think I'll stick with Win7 on my next desktop now.

I've been happy with my Pavilion DV6-3131TX so it's sad to see such a well specced (for the price) laptop under perform.

      • Ah you know people fear change. I just hate being made to do a thing that I like to do, differently. My effort with win8 was all directed to making it as much like win7 as I could. The link I provided above was very helpful in this regard.

  • Nice review - didn't think the USBs were 2.0 tho. According to one product spec it says there's 2 ports that are USB 3
Anyway, not gonna complain too much, especially when I am only paying $479 for mine
(5% off by paying with ING pay wave in $99 lots at OW, then another $50.70 off when I claim the TRS discount in a week or two)
All in, a good day for OzB

  • This does indeed have USB 3.0 ports, two on the left hand side of the unit…

Anyway I haven't played around too much with it, but it runs DotA 2 fine and that's all i bought it for really, the times where I cant be on my beloved PC.

Only has the 4gb of ram, would look at getting another stick of ram in there!

    • I concede I am probably wrong about the USB 2/3 thing. Most spec lists don't mention USB 3 and the ones that did differed in HDD size and RAM so I was uncertain. I did not look too closely on the device and it is now with its new owners i cant have a closer look. Thanks for the correction.

      • Reflecting back, I did recall seeing a SS on the side near one of the ports. I was thinking 'SS? Solid state? That's weird'. Reading just now I find that it stands for Super Speed USB, otherwise known as USB 3.0.

  • Got one yesterday and using the laptop now, thanks for the post!

  • Have a question - can't find the answer using search, as there's too many old laptop threads to go through…

I remember some discussion here several months ago about a particular brand/type of laptop that had very long battery life. Could someone please enlighten me?

  • Recon you are talking about the acer timeline series:
    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/08/best-battery-life-10-lapto…

    • Thank you!

  • you can upgrade this machine to 16GB ram
just tested the machine with 2 x 8gb

    • you can upgrade this machine to 16GB ram
just tested the machine with 2 x 8gb

Interesting! Did you find HP docs that say this is supported?

      • no, just had 2 sticks spare

  • Just picked one up and added another 4GB Ram for $40 ..thx for the post

  • Picked one from OW this morning happy with it, it look great
The only problem is white :p

    Thx op

  • Price matched at Officeworks Carnegie, Vic without a problem. The girl at the counter had a very unimpressed emotionless look on her face.

Also, I didn't want the usb wireless internet device, I already have a few spare ones lying around.

  • Has anyone seen if OW have changed their instore price?

  • An i7 laptop for $588 is very cheap. If I have not already own a laptop I would be buying this.

  • Grabbed one online yesterday and picked this up today at malaga. Case a little whiter(and brighter) than I expected!
Very good value with the price. Gona swap the old drive out with an SSD.
    Thanks for the post.
