who partitions their disks these days?

they're so cheap, just throw in another one…

Oh JV, your naive comments are so endearing. :/

    • Good luck throwing in a 3rd or 4th hard disk into your laptop! ;op

      • 2 is plenty, one for apps, one for data…

        • and one for ….

          "P" or "X" drive, right?

        • I prefer "joystick drivers".

        • Alright, thats okay, but what if i want to install both windows 8 and windows 7 on one drive, and use the other for data? Say i have an ssd for fast OS booting speeds, and one normal drive for data?

        • +1

I've read that the best place to store it is in a folder called "Nickelback".

        • "P" or "X" drive, right?

"X" External drive , usually in red or black lol

        • LOL!!! Noone should ever want to look in a folder with THAT name. =-D

You partition them so you can make a RAID 5 with one drive, silly.

      • +2

Raid 5 on a single disk? What a world of pain…

If I could use the condom analogy.. It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

    • who partitions their disks these days?

      I actually agree with this.

      • What's wrong with folders?
      • Copying between partitions is very slow because you are reading and writing from the same drive

Useful when reformatting and you don't have another large drive to save some data to (and you couldn't be bothered with the extra time and expense of burning DVDs). Pop your data on the other partition and wipe the Windows partition while maintaining your files on the other partition, ready-to-go after the reformat.

Telling apps to save to the partition natively mean no speed penalty copying from one partition to the other; you can store all your downloads on the extra partition if you want; copying from one partition to the other isn't mandatory.

Most laptops and so forth have a partitioned drive, whether visible or not.

Partitions are also useful when taking an external drive from one OS to another OS. Usually a certain file system is supported natively while another (more preferable one) isn't.

        Partitions allow flexibility.

However, there are free partitioning tools competing with this 'free' one, so I don't know if I could be bothered to grab this.

  • Playing around with boot manager, tried their boot manager, set back to windows and then it stopped working. Anyone who knows about computers, are they able to help?

Well if you have a Mac and a pc, partitioning is very useful since a disk needs to be, ah not sure what the term is but, reformatted to Mac's system to be able to use on a Mac.

Also, if the disk your Mac OS X is installed on is case sensitive, certain programs cannot be installed on it, so making a new case insensitive partition to either install these programs on or transfer all your stuff over is useful.

I personally use partitions, I find them handy. I have a time machine partition, Mac OS X partition (my internal hardrive is fried), data partition and windows compatible partition. :) much easier to fit these all onto one physical device

  • It's more to me about partitioning later on when you realise you need to change the sizes/etc. Thanks Op!

  • Forgot69: can you please tell me how to get the form?
I clicked subscriber, will that then send me a form and registration details?

    Thanks

  • Uh guys, seriously don't use the boot manager that came with it. I've spent the whole day wiping and restoring my harddrive and resetting bios setting and my laptop still won't boot.

Just shows logo and goes to a flashing underscore!?
