Zoo Friends Annual Membership 40% off (Unlimited Entries) - Taronga Zoo and Assoc Zoos

Couldn't find a duplicate for this, apologies if already logged.

Got an email from Everyday Rewards scheme citing 'exclusive' deal, 40% off Taronga zoo friends membership - I have been waiting for this for a while! Except it didn't seem so exclusive as you can see from enclosed url, they gave me a code but it didn't seem that it was required - I've added it in case anyway.

Zoo friends annual membership allows you to enter in Taronga zoos (Sydney and Dubbo), Adelaide, Melb and Perth zoos unlimited for a year. There are other benefits as well, see http://taronga.org.au/membership/member-benefits/zoo-friends…
I did notice parking at Taronga is no longer free :( ($6 a day now instead of previous $10 all day rate, actually they've increased their normal parking rates by a lot!)

Here are the fees after discount:-
Fees
Joining Fee: $15
Adults: $66.00 $110 for first adult ("Primary Member")
$60.00 $100 for additional adults
Children (aged 4-15): $33.00 $55
Infants (under 4): FREE
Concession: $47.40 $79
Transferable Guest Passes: $135.00

Well worth it for at least 2 visits. Best of all, no stress on time limit zoo visits as I can always come again!

If you have 2 or more kids, it still works out cheaper to get a FOTZ membership…

    • +1

I assume you generally go to Melbourne zoo. In which case can't you just use the Taronga membership for the adults and the kids are free on weekends and school holidays anyway at Melbourne Zoo?

      • Not necessarily, kids are only free if they are FOTZ members, otherwise it's $12.90 per visit on weekdays…

Free on weekends and public holidays though…

why so expensive to get in a zoo in Australia????????

    • +9

compared to almost every other country, EVERYTHING is expensive in Australia

      • +3

Australia is not a cheap country but if you look at current level of salaries and social benefits it is not too expensive.
Although retail margins are a bit crazy (e.g. for photo gear).

        • +1

Also, Taronga is not government funded like a lot of overseas flagship zoos. All operating costs are raised from admissions (I'm told by a staff member).

        • +2

they are partly government funded actually

"Australia is not a cheap country but if you look at current level of salaries and social benefits it is not too expensive."

I actually lived in the UK and Japan for the last 8 years and coming back to Australia feels incredibly expensive. Salaries and job opportunities really aren't so hot here, even taking into account the high AUD (which is incidentally on the way down). I still get asked by fellow (but less travelled) Aussies if those two countries were expensive to which I emphatically say NO it wasn't compared to here.

    • +1

You get to see the better version of oneself with proper grooming, free health benefits and no increase in medicare applicable to the residents. ;-)

    • +1

well… because you can see the zoo animals on the streets…
(doesn't australians ride kangaroos to work everyday?)

    • +2

I went to Taronga last week and it was $40 each, you pay more to go to a rugby game, it's hardly expensive compared to other forms of outdoor entertainment

  • This deal is only $4 more expensive for one adult and one child than the one we had a few weeks ago (search "Adelaide Zoo").
That one got 22 pluses. This one only 6.
My point is that this deal is actually pretty good, and could be more popular.

    • +1

That one got 22 pluses. This one only 6.

IMO, Adelaide zoo is much nicer than Taronga…

      • Whereas I prefer Taronga. When I went to Adelaide Zoo a lot of exhibits were empty. And the sunbear decided to die that day too, soon after I had read a few signs saying other animals had died recently. I now think of it as the zoo of dead animals

        • +2

I had read a few signs saying other animals had died recently.

That's because the animals were told they were being transferred to Taronga.

Some of the exhibits at Taronga look like they're a hundred years old and are very cruel to the animals…

  • From the website:

As well as unlimited entry to Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. Zoo Friends membership also entitles you to FREE admission for 12 months to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth Zoos.

So does this mean I get unlimited entry to Melbourne zoo as well? Or just one visit within 12 months?

    • +1

      yes, unlimited entry…

you just need your membership card and current photo id…

  • I know it is mentioned you can go to zoos from a few states, but just wondering can people from states other than NSW join this zoo friends membership as well?

    • +2

From how I read it, this is an arbitrage opportunity with Zoos. I.e. join the cheapest zoo in Australia (currently this deal) and then go to whatever zoo you want in the rest of Australia. The zoos all have a reciprocal agreement, so that you can join any of them and then go to any of them. (This was all discussed in the last deal on Adelaide zoo. I think for me Perth Zoo was working out cheapest.)

You can do the same with car road service as well, as all the car clubs also have reciprocal agreements. E.g. RACV is cheaper than NRMA, so join them instead. You don't have to live in Victoria to be a member.

      • -1

join the cheapest zoo in Australia

i'm pretty sure that the address you register needs to be in the state you are joining though…

        • I'm pretty sure that is not the case. You can join any zoo you want as a member. Membership is not restricted by state. I've checked this for Perth Zoo and Taronga.

      • See http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/95890 for the list of zoo annual membership prices that came out of the Adelaide zoo deal. Cheapest depends on whether you're single/partnered/childed/concessioned.

  • i dont suppose you can pass these on to friends or family for a weekend here and there?

    • +2

No. Not unless you buy the guest pass. The individual user ID's have your photo taken with them - so unless you look a lot like your family and friends you can't. If you do, and they get caught, you lose your pass…

    • They definitely check our photo id each time we visit…

  • How does the Wild life park compare with Taronga zoo?Very different?

    • +2

Wildlife at Darling Harbour blows chunks unless you just want to see Koalas and Kangaroos and one big Crocodile….

Taronga Zoo is a proper zoo - its big, takes a bit of getting around.

Wildlife is a 1 hour max proposition with basically only Aussie animals…

      • IC..Thanks

  • This or viewing Kangaroos & koalas in my backyard for free?

    • If you have elephants as well, I'll pay to go to your place. =)

      • Those damn giraffes woke me up again this morning !!!!

  • I wonder how these things work.

Say for example, if Hobart zoo has the cheapest membership and 100% of the people wanting to be members do so via
the Hobart Zoo membership scheme, which means Hobart gets 100% of the revenue, but the other zoos
still get their share of visitors, using their Hobart membership but not their $$$.

But the other zoos still have their operating costs, which I understand are covered largely by entrance fees
    and membership.

So if following my scenario above, the other zoos would go broke, no?

    Was just wondering.

    • That would only work if everyone had a residential address in Hobart to send the membership cards to…

    • No. Because luckily not everyone in society is retarded enough to fuss over a few dollars, so the other zoos will still get plenty of paying visitors.

      • so… Ozbargainers are retarded eh..?

        • I wouldn't want to generalise like that :-)

  • just bought 4 memberships on the 1 application - 2 for me and the mrs and 2 for another couple, saving an additional $15 joining fee and $6 on each additional membership. The T&Cs don't say you have to be related.. but i wonder whether we have to turn up together at the one time to get photos taken?

    • +1

The last time we did this (a couple of years ago anyway) we could email them our photos. So long as they were reasonably passport-like it was acceptable to them.

Can't say if this is still the case however.

  • When it says Melbourne zoos does this also include the sanctuary's or purely Melbourne Zoo?

    • Yes I was wondering that too. Does it include Healesville and Werribee?

    • Nope you need this membership for Healesville and Werribee, http://www.zoo.org.au/members which also has free reciprocal entry to Taronga Zoo, Adelaide Zoo, Perth Zoo, Western Plains Zoo, Monarto Zoo. Might end up being cheaper for you if you have a few kids as there is no cost for kids with this one. I'm not a member hence don't know if they ever have cheaper rates for it etc.

  • +2

Can anyone let me know if they have successfully applied using a non-NSW address?

  • +2

Also just an FYI from the T&C's

Your Zoo Friends membership enables you to visit other zoos in Australia, including Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. You can visit the interstate zoos as often as you wish but prior to doing so please contact the Zoo Friends office at Taronga so that we can provide you with a letter to confirm your membership is current. Unfortunately without this letter of confirmation you will not be permitted entry at the interstate zoos. You can request this information by contacting the Zoo Friends office on 02 9969 2777.

  • Someone did the FOTZ analysis last time and found that the perth zoo was the cheapest to become a member of,
you get free complimentary entry to all the other zoos in the country anyway.

PS: Taronga zoo members get discounted parking at the Taronga zoo, others pay full retail prices.

  • $47 concession fee is good, however the guest pass seems have no discount?
Another question, my son is 3.5 yo, will he need a pass for the coming whole year?

    • +1

      Covered in the faqs
      http://taronga.org.au/membership/frequently-asked-questions
If your child is turning four within six months of your renewal date we will suggest that you pay the full child membership for him or her. However, you can choose to only pay for the other members on your membership and wait until their birthday to pay for your child’s membership. Whether you pay on the renewal or when your child turns four their membership will expire at the same time as the main member’s.

  • How many times do you guys go to the zoo each year?

    • +1

When you have kids you will be going more than 5 times easily.

I find it's a great incentive to bribe the kids with.

  • +1

    Info only.

I checked with Zoos victoria and got the following reply.

    """
The cost of a membership with Zoos Victoria for two adults and one child is $184 and does include all three Zoos Victoria properties and five interstate properties as well. If you are to sign up for a membership then all proceeds go to that organisation and is not divided up dependent on where the most visitation is had.
    """

So if you wanted to support your local zoo and your local zoo is not Taronga zoo, then
    best to join locally.

  • Do they required kids under 4 to bring their id for the membership card? do we need to bring birth certificate?

    • +1

I never get checked for my kids' id, but they do need the membership cards.

  • +2

I have taken the membership for me and my wife. It is the best thing I have done in Sydney. This allows us to visit all the Zoos around Oz and know the wildlife and nature.

  • Thanks OP. took this offer.

  • +1

How do you get the membership cards? Do I have to go to Taronga Sydney or could I go to western plains.

    • Have you find out how to collect ticket?I wish to buy ticket on this coming Sun,visit zoo on same day.

    • +1

Email says you can go to western plains admission counter, open 9-4 every day to get your membership cards
