Frequently Asked Questions

So I can really call myself a Laird, Lord or Lady?

As the owner of a Scottish estate, you will have the full rights to style yourself as a Laird (Lord) or Lady. Laird simply means “Landowner” in Scots English. In English Laird can be translated as “Lord” and the female form is “Lady”. To quote Lord Lyon, King of Arms, head of the Heraldic Executive in Scotland ‘laird’ has generally been applied to the owner of an estate, sometimes by the owner himself or, more commonly, by those living and working on the estate.

This courtesy title should not be confused with a Noble Title such as those which are conferred by the Queen on the advice of her ministers. “Laird” is not now nor has ever been a Noble title. It is simply a dignity given to a person through the courtesy of others who acknowlege their status as a Scottish Landowner.

Can I change my bank account, credit cards etc?

Yes, we include in each gift pack the legal Master Title Deed accepted in most jurisdictions internationally to confirm your new title to your bank and government agencies. You will then be able to change your title on official documentation to Laird, Lord or Lady.

Please note that government documents which do not display any title, such as all passports and in some jurisdictions your drivers licence cannot be changed.

What is a Master Title Deed?

The Master Title Deed is similar to a Deed Poll in the way that it operates. The Deed Poll is based on a persons right to adopt the name of their choice and asserts their intention to do so. The Master Title deed can also be used to do this, but in addition is gives effect to a persons right to adopt a title that they have authority to use and asserts their intention to do so. By owning a small Scottish estate you gain this right to adopt the title. The Master Title Deed gives effect to this choice. Our Master Title Deed is licensed from, and used under the authority of, Deed Poll Services.

Are there any hidden charges, taxes, or future payments to make?

No. There are no land taxes in Scotland and absolutely no other costs associated with buying or owning this land. We maintain public liability insurance over the entire wood which will continue in force after your purchase. You will have no further expense to pay after the initial purchase price.

i just had a look at the wikipedia page and this the first thing it says on there:

google search, TONNES of sites outing places like this.

  • Whaa? So if I buy enough of these, can I actually own a piece of land in Scotland about the size of a large house block (100 sq metres) for around $8,000? AND I get to force people to call me Lord Mikeypants?

  • +1

I "own" a square foot of land in some Scottish swamp somewhere (not through these guys, through eBay I think). Of course it's a novelty! There are plenty of websites out there pointing out that these purchases don't mean squat:

    http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/3003/can-i-become-a…
    http://www.clanjames.com/laird.htm
    http://www.ebay.com.au/gds/buying-a-lord-lady-laird-knight-b…

I bought one for my grandfather (who loved it), he knows it's just a novelty.

  • Is there anyway to check if this is legit? I kinda figured it was as it does say on the Living Social deal that it is a sale associated with the Starlight Foundation and I am just guessing here that a charity wouldn't want to deal with a scam site.

It is Living Social that is making the donation to the Starlight Foundation. The Starlight Foundation have no relationship with any of the deals that Living Social are pushing with this benefit.

Living social? Thats the mob that was hacked the other day
        http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/consumer-security/livi…

        • +1

Thats them! Hacked, and personal details of there customers taken from their servers!
Negging because their security sucks and after the hack all they did for their "valued customers" was say sorry, and boast about how good the security is and how much they value security….

  • $49 for a 10sq ft camping plot

You would have to be pretty skinny and short, e.g. 2 ft by 5 ft, to be able to camp there. Or sleep on your side all night.

I looked at this a few days ago. I searched for '"highland titles" scam' and this is the top entry from Google:
    http://highlandtitlesscam.wordpress.com/
    which has a link to
    http://highlandtitlesscam.wordpress.com/the-glencoe-name-con…

    In a nutshell:
-The Glencoe name is being used in a misleading way
-They are not selling any land to you - therefore this is a straight money making venture for them.
-The perpetrators have lots of other dodgy dealings

Yes it is a novelty, without anything legitimate about it.

printing out a fake cert is surely cheaper?

  • Do any of you guys want to put some money together and buy enough land to host a festival on?

  • Yay another group buying website scam.
Should ban them all from OzB.
