Free Coathangers at All Kmarts

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Had no idea you could just take coathangers and pant hangers from the big blue bins at self checkouts at kmart. Grabbed a bunch. Pant hangers are expensive! Employee confirmed they're free. Great for guys too lazy to iron their shirts

Mod: OK, that was fun. This isn't really a freebie. This comment sums it up.

Whatever makes you guys happy I guess

Even if these coat hangers were available for anyone to take (highly unlikely as in most stores they get sent to suppliers to reuse on new shipments) these are the crappiest ones around. Would leave impressions on your shoulders for shirts hung over them and they damage pants clipped (no padding). I don't know why Kmart, Target and others use them in the first place as often you will see the shine/worn marks when you unclip them from pants. Can't believe all the + votes

  • Ok so we've confirmed people do it and Kmart allow it, at least on a small scale. As this isn't a deal, perhaps it should be moved to forums

People also kill people, you're not meant to do that either.

      • +2

I would if Kmart said I could.

  • A professional ozbargainer would ask to take the whole lot!

  • not very bright are you

If guilt kicks in after the fact, perhaps think of donating them to your local Vinnies or Op shop, they are usually crying out for extras?

    • Steal from Kmart, donate to Vinnies…

hmmmm What would you call that OzbaRobinhood ?

    • Pretty sure they're not crying out for stolen goods.

    Several Points

    1) "Had no idea you could just take coathangers and pant hangers from the big blue bins at self checkouts at kmart."- Just because you probably won't get arrested doesn't mean you can "just take" them.

    2)"Grabbed a bunch." No comment.

3)"Pant hangers are expensive!" Not really.

    4) "Great for guys too lazy to iron their shirts"- Hanging clothes isn't a substitute for ironing just like chewing gum isn't a substitute for brushing your teeth.

    5) If this is getting 41 +votes OzBargain has reached a new low.

Need new OzB category so you can choose between bargain, freebie and theft.

  • Not a bargain. Scavenging :/

  • +1

Did you ever think that "recycling" may mean they go to charity stores to hang clothes donated for the needy? A photo of a sign saying "please take" or the like would convince me, this "bargain" is nothing more than petty theft.

  • Some stores have huge cardboard boxes that they fill with hangers to be picked up and I've been told before that I could have some but wasn't interested. These ones that are being disposed of/sent back I wouldn't see a problem with, but these ones are most likely going to be used in store.

When you buy something ask if you can keep the hanger (I know I've never been turned down). But taking more hangers than garments to me is wrong.

    • I bought $60 worth of clothes there. Not enough? $60 is a lot at Kmart

        Not necessarily.

It's funny how no one was giving negs until 1 person did and now everyones doing it O.O

May I suggest a new OzBargain category - Dubious Freebies
    Consists of examples such as:

    • the glass at the pub your beer came in
    • the entire stash of napkins and straws from McDonalds
    • the tin of coffee, the box of tea bags and some packets of bikkies from your workplace
    • the plate and cutlery from your restaurant dinner
    • 100 brown paper bags from beside the 7/11 pie warmer
    • two feet of paper cups from every water dispenser you spot
    • as many plastic spoons/forks/knifes/chopsticks as you can carry from the local chinese takeaway
    • toilet rolls from the public toilet

    etc etc etc

Please I am being overwhelmed with bargains! Make a new thread!

      • comment gold, right there.

Note to self: water and funny comments do not mix.

        • Is there an ozbargain badge for people who make awesome comments, coz this guy deserves one

Those actions would upset workers. This obviously doesn't.

      • +7

as a worker, i tend to disagree completely. steal all the napkins and brown paper bags you want man

    • +1

i still don't like how mcdonalds actually call them napkins.

napkins implies that they're actually absorbent.

      • +3

They should call them mouth papers!

      • +1

Those napkins don't clean my mouth as much as they rearrange food on my face.

      • Stationary from the office cupboard
      • Taking 20 "free" samples of food at the supermarket
      • Eating nuts and\or grapes in the supermarket
      • etc. etc.

I think i'm getting a little firm over the thought of this category…

Loving this post! Food for thought… Why do Kmart sell 10 pack of coat hangers for $4 if they are giving them away for free?!?

    • Because not everyone is an OzBargainer

    • +1

Because not everyone is a Professional

  • used to work for kmart 3 years ago
we most definitely had to keep coathangers and would get in trouble for giving them out
however we would give them out to people who asked because it was just much easier than starting a fuss and getting a manager involved (and getting yelled at later)
