I bought this one last time. unlocked for $5 online. Great little phone I used it in China with a chinese sim card worked really well. I also installed dice player on it and put a few movies on a micro sd card , The GPS function works well with Maps

  • Consider too 4" 800x480 Telstra Urbane for $60 (inc 3GB of data for use in 1st month). http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101878 . It's got a lot more pixels than this 3.5" 480x320 unit, faster CPU and bigger battery but is harder to unlock.

    • It has a 0.3MP front camera. No front camera on this one.

    • Don't even think about getting an Urbane if you're wanting to use the phone's camera for anything other than still shots. The shutter speed is the slowest I've ever seen.

  • how to unlock?

  • it should be $29.50 this time… lol

    $49.50 -> $39.50 - $29.50?

  • Did anyone find a clean working root for the Huawei Ascend Y201? All of the ones I downloaded were virus/trojan laden according to virustotal.

  • Just goes to show how overpriced most phones are

great phone, with the flybuys points and ING paywave 5% rebate, this came to $25 for me, with 10 bucks credit on telstra, not bad for an ICS phone!

    • how do u get the ING paywave 5%
i pd mine via paywave & never got the 5% disc.

      • 5% as rebate to your ING account when use ING PayWave card.

        • thank you very much
I unfortunately, bank with CBA, not ING, so then nil discount for me :(

This is SUCH a fabulous phone for the price. Great first phone for mum or technologically inept girlfriend.

Is that you Tony? No, even he is not that much of a misogynist. :-)

      • +1

Actually, I found his feedback very helpful. Some people simply don't have a technological bone in their bodies, so knowing a phone is easy (or otherwise) to use is extremely useful.

I agree Geewhizz, my comment, as noted by the :-) (smile) at the end, was not meant to be taken too seriously.

Available now if you received the May FlyBuys vouchers.
According to that voucher, you need to activate the SIM by 26 May to receive the 2500 Bonus Points.
Enjoyed the phone in FNQ rainforest & included SIM with $10 Bonus Credit for calls & SMS (valid for 14days).

Transferred $18.90 credit left over from $10 Starter Pack deal by chatting with Telstra & they transferred FREE - which was counted as a $20 recharge & extended free SIM to 31days. So getting 15c & no flagfall calls, 10c/MB data on Simplicity Plan. Will transfer $1 with credit2u within 14d of expiry to get another 14 days to use credit. Will then transfer unused Credit (but not Bonus Credit) to next Starter Pack or buy apps…

  • This one is a Telstra "Blue tick" as well

    • Wasn't sure what it is… All Blue Tick Phones optimised for country use - excellent coverage. Also known as Country Phones

  • does it have auto focus camera? and led light?

    • i think autofocus- Yes, but Flash -NO.

      The camera is not good.

      • NOT Autofocus NO flash Very basic - but CHEAP! (could not get bar code scanner to work, but QR scanner works)

    • I have one & I'm pretty sure it's fixed focus. Can't get it to read QR codes

      • I loaded free app Norton SNAP & it worked with advertising material QR codes - just took a few seconds to scan.

  • I got one last round. Very good value. Unlocking under $6. Never been able to root it though I used several different mothods

One of my colleagues got two and they were good too.

Another colleague got it with dead screen (silly him to buy the unlock code prior to playing with it first, so he lost the unlock code fee).

Another colleage could not have it unlocked!

So, it's about luck in our case really. Regardless, it still is a great phone for your kids or for your extra sim to play with. You could buy an Aldi Mobile Sim for it, then yyour kids could be in your reach at any time any where

  • FYI this phone will NOT do HSUPA as advertised. Changing ROMs will not help, it appears to be a modem issue.

I have confirmed with Huawei that it should run 5.76mbps upload, but will only do 384 kilobits per second. There is some discussion on Whirlpool about it.

    • If a phone has or is working on hsupa, does the letter "h" show on the screen?

      thank you

If you need a spare battery for this model they are available at dx.com for $7.40.

  • hey guys, to get the flyby pts i need to activate the telstra sim. my question is can i still activate the the sim if im getting it unlocked or will it stuff up my phone. would i unlock before or after the unlock?
    thanks

    • +1

Unlocking just means that you can use any sim, including Telstra, so you can do it any time. It's better to try the phone first to see if everything works though.

      • THANKS MATE

  • got one - thanks OP. now off to aldi.

    • why don't you use the $10 free calls for 14 days 1stly

  • Anyone in Adelaide get one? The city store didn't have any so was wondering where to check after work in the north eastern suburbs

    • It's okay, found two in Firle :D

  • Does anyone know if a Telstra Tablet Data+ sim would work in this phone?

    • Yes - if you don't want to make calls - you can use Internet & VOIP calls. (eg Telstra iPad SIM is data only, no included credit for calls, Google Play etc)

  • Bought one of these phones and shall be using 1stly the $10 calls for 14 days,
then unlocking the phone to utilise my current sim card
this way i am guaranteed my flybuy points - 2500, which is equivalant to $10

  • Purchased these and my telstra sim worked straight away. So what do I do with the new sim, and does it have any credit to use up. And if I use my sim will I still get the flybuys? thanks

    • what do I do with the new sim

Activate soon, or no FlyBuys points ($12.50 loss!)

if I use my sim will I still get the flybuys?

      No

does it have any credit to use up

Yes - $10 Bonus Credit (only for standard calls & text) for 14days. (Can't roll over credit or use to buy apps)

Your choice - activate to get 1250 points & free calls & text you could use, or use your existing SIM & get nothing.

      • +1

just wondering why 1250 points only? isn't it 2500 points? are we talking about FlyBuys point?

        thanks mate

        • My Typo! 2500 FlyBuys points = $12.50. Mixing my $ & pts :)

  • My parents got one of these and have used their existing Telstra sim in it, they want to activate the included sim to get the bonus fly buys points.
On the packaging it says "tap to activate from your phone".
Do you need to do this to receive the bonus fly buys points or can you activate the sim online?

    • +1

Activate anyway you like. It has widget/app on phone to access your account for activation.

  • Are you obligated to spend credit when you activate the SIM? to get the 2500 flybuy points?
Does it matter if someone else activates the SIM instead of you?

    • +1

You just need to activate - it would not matter who activates it (it could have been a present etc).
No spend necessary, unless you want to use it beyond 14days.

      • Does it still have the $14 credit by default?

        • SIM comes with $10 Bonus Credit for 14Days

  • so I guess we need to contact telstra and activate the sim and then use the credit to get flybuys so we should transfer our telstra phone number??? thanks

    • You can just activate the SIM (on phone, online, in store) - no need to use credit or probably put SIM in any phone (but $10 Bonus Credits may be handy for a few calls/txt & then chuck SIM as there are better ways to make calls).

  • Next step up from this would be a $99 4.0" Huawei G300/G300+. Biggest improvement there being the 4" 800x480 screen.

    • And 1GHz speed, but you need to upgrade OS from Gingerbread 2.3 to get ICS as in this. 5MP Camera with flash.
But 4 times price for 4" 800x480 IPS screen with scratch resistent Gorilla glass!
(7" WiFi Tablet is only a little more eg Asus Memo Pad $132 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104501 - tether it to this $25 phone for a bigger screen, but not a great tablet.)

You value $10 Bonus Credit at $10!! (can only use for overpriced standard calls & text, can't be rolled over/transferred) Next you will say $500 credit on a $29 cap is worth $500. You don't work for a telco by any chance :-)

These $10 SIMs sell for $1 including post (min 2) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104208

    • with the - less: $1.95 from ING 5% cashback
you actually need an ING bank account to get this discount :)?

      • Yes. It's FREE! 5% rebate into your account for every PayWave purchase over 6 months. Plenty of discussion so do an OB search :-)

  • Good value phone as has been stated many times in many deals.

  • Half-price again starting Wednesday 5th of June.

    • But now only 1000 pts.

      • Yes, 1000 pts only. However I got nothing from last deal in Apr, when they promise to give me 2500 pts on activation (which I did). So 1000 pts that never arrive are as good as 2500 pts that never arrive either.

        • Takes up to 28 days. Call them!

        • i havent received mine either since 27th April!

  • Anyone interested or know where to buy a similar case to the flip style vinyl/leather case with magnetic fastener but for the Ascend?

    1. It's easy to open with one hand
    2. Protects the screen whilst in the pocket
    3. still lets you take pictures without taking out of case

I can't seem to find it online and have also contacted a number of ebay sellers but only one responded.

So I'm trying to guage interest so that one of the sellers will contact their suppliers to make it available.
