    • I find OW prints pretty crappy

      • Big W? Sorry I don't really know what the quality is like out there as a rarely ever print photos. But as usual I'm always happy to support alternatives other than HN.

Big W + HN = Fuji wet lab = better quality
OW + K-mart etc = Kodak dry lab = crappier quality

Of course this is an over-generalisation, and it depends on which store you go to, but I'd stick to Big W or HN, given the choice..

      • Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

I always thought Kodak was the better quality film/photo paper/company.
Guess I am wrong by about 20 years…

mod - vote revoked; reasoning is unclear

        • Why are you negging the deal?

Oh it must of been my fat fingers. Did not mean to Neg. Its obvious a bargain

      • I disagree, I found Kodak to be better than Fuji.

I was printing computer-generated images with a pure white background. On the fuji machines the white background would come out as light grey, quite noticeable when compared to the white border around the prints.

On the Kodak machines at OW, there was no difference between the border and the background, both were pure white.

Although the image quality was better on the Kodak machines, the kiosks have a number of shortcomings compared to Fuji - no slot for micro SDHC, and the machines are unable to accept BMP or PNG images. JPEG is all they support, it seems.

      • I guess it varies a lot. I used BigW up until about a year ago when I found their prints started looking very disappointing. Switched to OW for the convenience of printing on the spot, and was a lot happier with the quality. (this is in Canberra Civic/Braddon, BTW)

        • Completely agree with this…heck, in my experience, there are even differences in quality depending on who is behind the counter (dunno how that is possible, but that's just my humble opinion)..

The paper needs to be calibrated (balanced) and the machines need to be serviced.

Like the above post that says the white wasn't white it was probably that stores fault not the machine. The person behind the counter shouldn't make any difference (well unless they were the one that didn't bother to to the calibration in the morning.)

It could also be the auto fix the kiosks can apply. It could have changed the white balance thinking it was a photo. You should be able to turn that off and on but it depends on how they have been set up. The person behind the desk can submit a print to the queue from the main unit and avoid any auto correction to see if that is the problem.

    • Yes, HN's PQ is better than OW's.

Thought that said "pints" for a second. Got really excited. Must be Wednesday…

  • Hmmm, doesn't actually work for me online. Anyone else tried it?

When HN and BigW were running a similar $1 promotion concurrently a few months back, I had the same pics done at both for a comparison.

Harvey Norman did some pretty weird cropping and the colours were flat compared with the pics from BigW.

I found this too. I think the problem was the fit page / actual size setting. It was the reverse of what it should be when it previewed. When I got the prints I showed them the prints and they saw what I did on the kiosk. They then did them at their desk and it worked ok.

  • Nice find. Now I need more walls to display my photos.
