New Phone Suggestions or Good deals

So I installed the scoopon app on my phone and next day (today) it has died on me, coincidence? (jokes aside) it turns off and just flashes Samsung. It was a Galaxy Ace. I had it for 1-2 years and started having issues with messages not being able to send.

So I need a good phone prefer android over iphone.

Cheap needed as I am a student. Super annoyed though as all my stuff at was on it.

  • It was probably planned by Scoopon so you'd buy a phone from COTD. :P

    What's your budget?

  • I boycotted Scoopon for so long! I have a $10 wish card to put towards it I guess.

I usually spend $100-200 on a phone depending on what it is. If it is reliable and going to last the long haul I'd rather pay a little extra. Prepaid with Optus at the moment - recent recharge.
If there's any good deals though for decent phones though less or more. I wouldn't buy say a $600-800 iphone 5

    • Have you looked at any of those low budget plans from Live Connected or Vaya? I think they're much more value for money than prepaid..

  • Nexus 4 or the optimus G if its still available for $448

For under $300 you can get a quad core LG 4x P880
    http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/lg-optimus-4x-hd-p880-black-andr…

If you want to go cheaper still, get the Huawei G300+ from Vodafone online store and then buy an unlock code from Bagman ($5). It's not a high end phone, but will poop all over the Samsung G. Ace in terms of performance.

    • A bit hesitate of LG, I had a web slider from them years ago and my brother had issues with his 3D phone. Prefer not to be with Vodafone but I appreciate the help.

That's ages in tech life, they're pretty good now apart from updating their phones.

        • LG 3D phone was recently. I'll keep an eye out though so thanks.

      • Prefer not to be with Vodafone but I appreciate the help.

Buying the phone doesn't mean you will have to use Voda service. YOu can also buy the phone outright from DSE.

The G300+ works with Optus YesG and it is the cheapest 1ghz CPU phone you can buy locally.

      • My son has LG 4X HD and he is not happy with it, saying the battery life is horrible. I like the Huawei Y201 so I think the G300+ is worth trying.

  • buy S3 4g under $400- wont regret it or wait for LG Optimus G 4G to go down sub 400 again like jb's deal

  • Everything seems to have gone up on kogan etc

  • If you're after cheap.
Telstra Prepaid Huawei Ascend Y201 Smart Phone +2500 Flybuy Points $39.50 @ Coles from 22nd May
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/103839

  • It depends on what you want to do with it.

    1. $39.50 3.5" Telstra Huawei Y201 from Coles. Bagman can unlock it for $5. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/103839

    2. $60 4" Telstra Urbane from JB Hifi. Good if your with Telstra otherwise requires a $20 physical unlock which puts the total price too close to the better-equipped G300 below in price. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101878

    3. $99 4" Vodafone Huawei G300+ (preferred as supports Optus dual-band 3G) or G300 from Target. Bagman can unlock plus there is a Free unlock procedure available at modaco. http://www.lasoo.com.au/offer/mobile-smart-phones/huawei-g30…

    4. All the rest, eg: Motorola XT885, Sony Sola.

  • I picked up a Xperia z and I like it way more then my s3. Not cheap tho.

  • Google nexus 4 + Vaya or Liveconnected $17 plans (or lower depending on your usage)

    $350 for phone here - https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_4_8gb…

the phone may be cheaper else where but i just googled and found that google site for it.

Nexus 4 is basically a slightly lower spec'd (not by much) of GS3…

I don't see the point of getting 4G, i have a GS3 4G with virgin and i kinda regret it since 4G connectivity isn't widely available in AU (CBD and selected areas) so just go for a non 4G phone for now i reckon.

    • Nexus 4 is basically a slightly lower spec'd (not by much) of GS3

It actually has a better cpu and gpu than than the S3.

so just go for a non 4G phone for now i reckon

Depends how often you change your phone a visit areas with 4G coverage.

    • 4G is the mobile technology of tomorrow. Telstra, Optus and Voda have been / are battling it out to roll their 4G network out to as much of the population as possible.

Telstra will have 4G coverage to two thirds of the population by June this year. link

By the end of 2014, Optus 4G is planned to cover 70% of the metro population.link

Voda has just rolled out their 4G network too, expect to see significant network coverage improvements across the next several months.

In my opinion, if you live in a metropolitan city it would probably be a good investment to buy a phone that at least HAS 4G compatibility. You don't need to have a 4G enabled plan right now, or you might not have 4G coverage where you are either. But as telcos are rolling out new coverage areas every month - you will at least have the option in the future to change to a 4G enabled plan and access the carrier's 4G network with your phone.

I would recommend Huawei G300+ ($99 link given above by op) and update it to ICS. Cool phone.
I purchased one and unlocked it free from vodafone and updated it to ICS without problem.

    Also $99 @officeworks
    http://m.officeworks.com.au/mt/www.officeworks.com.au/retail…

Note: officeworks says G300 but they are G300+

    • Went to OW and found that they were selling the G300 not the 300+ . We actually took the phone out of the box and it stated it was a G300. Perhaps there are some stores that have the 300+ . Dick Smith will not budge on their price of $129.

  • I know this is an old fave of many at OB, but I recommend a Motorola Defy Plus (note: way better than the standard Defy). Fast, good screen and camera, expandable memory and changeable battery. Rugged too, and good reception. Around $160-180 on auction sites.

I have htc velocity 4 g but i dont think 4g network is widely available in Australia. 3g network is good and fast enough nowadays. 4g network definitely drains your battery a lot quicker than 3g.
Thinking of buying nexus 4 for 419 or galaxy s3 for around that price.
