  • i don't have any aldi gear myself, but a fair few of my beginner friends bought it last year. jacket warm and quite waterproof (for the price you're paying anyways). only thing is. on the snow fields, you can totally tell who has bought aldi gear.

because they are all carrying it in boxes?

      ;)

And if that bothers someone, their reasons for being there in the first place are all wrong.

nah man, everyone knows that how you dress makes up half your steeze. if you're dressed up in an awesome getup and you fall down people will just be like, "woah, that dude was obviously trying some gnarly trick, check out how steezy he is".

contrary to actually trying a gnarly trick whilst wearing aldi gear, "ha that guy is such a loser"

          Lol

I'd be more inclined to help my fellow bargain-hunter. He's one of us.

This deal looks interesting, half the price of the Contours and Go Pros.

  • I think I'm gonna pick up an egg cooker.

    • +17

is that a nice way of saying thermal underwear for the gents ?

  • +6

This is usually one of the busiest sales at Aldi. Expect a rush of crazy Mums at opening time.

    Their ski gear is fine.

I did a complete season in Chamonix in 2008 with one of their jackets both skiing and boarding (wife is an international instructor). Have also used their socks, sunnies, gloves etc and it's all perfectly functional.

Lets be honest though there's no real need for thermals here so don't go overboard, just get the basics. I normally ski in a fleece with a couple of t-shirts and a cap unless it's really windy or wet.

I wonder is their compression wear from page 20 any good? Can it be used for running?

  • Those inoc jackets look good, worth paying $40 extra for the removable primaloft vest and better fabric. Got a couple of TNF stuff at home already so I really shouldn't buy them!! haha :P

edit: note the "woven polyamide" elsewhere, that's just a fancy name for a type of plastic into which nylon falls.

And I saw the $100 Medion cameras. I wonder how well they compare against those generic tubular ones on ebay. Thinking using it for cycling :)

  • Have been using their Crane socks for a few seasons now.
Pretty decent compared to other similar priced brands.

  • I was wondering what ski gear was $1.99 because I wasn't aware that, then read: "Extra Large Shopping Bag $1.99".
Anyway, plan to spend a couple days to the snowy mountain next month, just let my 3 yo son see and touch the real snow. Will buy some for him and maybe a few boots for the adults.

When I was a kid, the extra large (garbage) bag had 3 holes cut in it for arms and head and became the water proof ski jacket! Dish washing gloves also used, these were water proof but may need some woolen gloves underneath to stop frost bite.

      • +6

Your parents were obviously ozbargainers too !

      • +1

Wow, I thought I was the only one who had to wear dish gloves while skiing!! Though I don't think I had anything under them & duly froze :-(

      • +4

Kids were tougher back then and so were the parents ;-)

  • I love Aldi Ski Gear, you would normally see the same gear at rebel sport just re-badged and with 30% mark up, all my friends wear it and its held up over many seasons. But yes only problem is that you will look very similar to someone else on the snow fields. Best to buy and then keep in storage for a year then wear it the year when everyone is wearing the next seasons gear. There won't be so many people wearing the same stuff.

I've used the gear, have taken small kids who've also used the gear and it's all been great. The jackets have heaps of pockets inside and out and really great design, the included cloth for wiping your camera lens/goggles/sunnies is really handy. Pants have pre shaped knees and heaps of pockets too, most have adjustable waist.
We had no problems rolling around in the snow wearing it. Went in Victoria and wore the jackets and pants with just a light jumper under the jacket (both adults and kids) and that's it. No need for thermals. I don't know about the softshell ones. They feel like a thick but lighter wetsuit material. I have one from last year one of the kids will try this coming winter on our visit.
Warning about the toboggans and that snow bike thing, most of the ski resorts won't allow them. Especially the snow bike. The toboggans seem to vary but basically they want you to hire theirs so they make up some rule about moulded plastic only.

  • SKI GEAR FROM $1.99!

… The shopping bag to carry it in is the only thing that's $1.99.

I was at my local Aldi this morning to pickup a $40 ski/snowboarding helmet. Mustve been about 10am, but half the people in the store were crowding around the ski gear. A couple near me were "abused" by an unhappy bogan, presumably because their trolley full of ski gear contained some items he was hoping to buy. "I hope you die on the slopes!!" he yelled. Classic.

    • Ha! I was speaking to the guy on checkout and asked him if this is the worst day of the year for him.

He replies: "It always brings out the best in people." I wasn't too focused and said something along the lines of "Not from what I saw, it's hell over there."

He gave me a look that could wither a cactus at thirty paces and quietly added: "Yeah, a bit of sarcasm there mate." and sighed audibly. Poor ALDI employees on Ski sale day :)

      • I happened to go to Aldi for some food and noticed the sale. Grabbed the last soft shell jacket. Its pretty good. It was a feeding frenzy in there though.

  • Can anyone comment on the snow chains? Are they worth the $40?
