OzBargain 2013 EoFY Charity Donation - Vote for Charities!

Post-Poll Update: Thanks to everyone who has participated! We now have the top 3 charities voted from our community members, and the donation will be distributed according to the votes they have got:

Charity Votes Donation
Fred Hollows Foundation 127 $5,902
Cancer Council 93 $4,322
Salvation Army 69 $3,206

I will be arranging the donation and post an update here once it's done.

Donation Update: Final amount — $13,430. Please use the poll to vote your favourite charity.

It's that time of the year again! We donated last year, and again just before Christmas. For the end of this financial year, OzBargain will again donate $10,000 to charities in Australia — and you guys are going to help us to decide which one to donate to. Do use last Christmas' list as a guide on which charities in Australia have minimum administrative cost, as we do prefer to give to those that put majority of donations to good causes.

However, there's more! For every unique commenter here (of published comments), I would be adding an extra $10 to the donation, until mid-night this Sunday 9th of June (or until my accountant calls in to cut this short :) So, if there are 100 people commenting in this thread, I'll be adding an extra $1,000 to the donation. Or an extra $2,500 if there are 250 people comment here (to the total of $12,500).

Do note that

  • Creating multiple accounts on OzBargain is against our terms and conditions, and might get your accounts banned.
  • Posting spam, personal attacks and trolling comments might get your comment removed (your account might be temporarily banned as well). Unpublished comments don't count towards the tally.

So,

  • DONE. Until Sunday 9 June, comment and suggest the charity that OzBargain should be donating to this year.
  • DONE. We'll finalise the amount (after counting the unique commenters), and then put up a poll for people to vote.
  • DONE. Voting will stop on 16 June. The top 3 charities will receive their portion of donation in proportion to the number of votes they get.
  • DONE OzBargain will then donate to these charity organisations the following week.

All clear?

Alright. It has just passed midnight here in Sydney and the final amount would be $13,430. I have been counting the suggestions so far and there are probably 50 different charity groups suggested. Unfortunately there's probably no point of creating a poll with that many options so I'll probably just pick the top 10 selected so far, and with community poll over the next to determine the top 3 charities that we will be donating to. The poll should be up within the next day or two.

The well known ones are definitely having advantage though — Salvo, Cancer Council, Hollows, etc. However our Christmas donation would be focusing on smaller charities.

Poll is now online. Unfortunately I only picked the ones with 3 or more supporters. However I did get the names of many smaller charities which we'll evaluate next time.

  • If i have million bucks i donate to all of these, It is very hard to choose eh. Is it a possible cure for cancel?

  • great initiative scotty!!
too late now for the $10, but +1 for MSF

  • +2

I missed the cut off, but I love OzBargain - I'll put $10 in myself to the nominated charity.

    Hey scotty,
How do you intend on giving the money to the charity?
Are you going in person, Sending a cheques or doing it online?

Should get one of those huge printed cheques!

    • Personally I hate those huge cheques :)

Previously I just use the charity's website to do the online donation (or through the givenow.com.au website). Almost all in credit card, which I don't actually prefer (fee on the other end). I don't expect anything different this time.

After seeing the effect that depression has on a family my vote is for beyond blue.

  • Scotty - have the votes been automatically populated according to our suggestions in the thread? I suggested several differrent charities but my vote seemingly is defaulting to the first (Swags), which appears to be a useless vote given the current numbers, can this be changed?

    • Had to use a bit of database-fu to remove your votes but you can re-vote now.

      • Cheers!

Great work Scotty and OzBargain :)

    Fred Hollows Foundation

Great. Keep up the good work Scotty.

  • Keep the great work ozbargain!

Any of these charities will be a worthy recipient but I vote for the smaller, less glamorous/obvious ones. Cancer research gets billions of $$$ every year worldwide - better to sponsor a kid in the Smith family who with help might one day become a cancer specialist, a social worker, or a philanthropist in his or her own right. Once again I'd like to congratulate Scotty for his generosity and remind Ozbargainers that putting even a small amount of YOUR OB SAVINGS into charity on a regular basis is PAINLESS and a BIG HELP.

Next year do a $10K Kiva account and the top bargain of the day gets to pick the person to loan to…

    • Kiva is not a Deductible Gift Recipient (aka not tax deductible).

  • Fred Hollows Foundation :)

  • +3

I'm not saying the salvos don't do great work because they do but it really saddens me that they are in the top 3 charities :(

Anyone who thinks homosexuals are sinners is a bit whacky if you ask me…

  • I'd like to make people more aware of the need for hospice/palliative care centres in Australia for children.

    One example http://www.hummingbirdhouse.org.au/

    Thank you for reading.

  • Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research.

Being a parent that lost a child to Neuroblastoma , this is my number 1.

  • I thought Salvation Army was anti-gay?

  • +1

    Great work!

  • I would vote down the Salvation Army if I could, I don't really appreciate their attitude to gay people.

RSPCA come on. I love my dog, but what a joke its rated so highly.

  • Cancer council for me. Good job!

  • nice work

Spent Friday night moving fund and arranged the donation. All done!

One tiny complaint from me — why is Fred Hollows Foundation accepts online donation only through their PayPal account?!! I guess making it easier to donate is a good thing, but there should at least be some alternatives with lower cost on their end.

    • Cheers Scotty.

    • Maybe Paypal do fee free or lower costs for charity?

  • Great work Scotty.

If anyone has been inspired to be charitable, I have just posted info about a charity event I am involved with. We don't want your money, just donate a can of food (and you will get a free DVD rental).
