    The spirit of monkey is……
    irrepressible!

    • +2

      That's what I thought.

Then I bought this box set about 5 years ago. Watching it again tainted such a sweet memory of mine :(

      • justtoreply: My exact thoughts as well….

Same goes for many other shows from my childhood - Goodies, A-TEAM, Dukes of Hazzard.. the list is endless..

        So I stopped watching them..

        • I agree regarding lots of childhood TV shows, but I have to disagree when it comes to "Monkey!". Personally I still love watching the originally dubbed episodes to this day!

Wonder Twin Powers, activa….oh sorry wrong show.

Man, so many awesome memories watching this..

    • +1

it was kung fu fighting and magical powers all rolled into one neat package for kids to watch after school…. whats not to like! unreal memories :).

    • The good ol' days when TV shows went for more than 10 episodes a season…

      • Ha - edited my comment.
Here's what today's kids get subjected to: http://youtu.be/xCEuNqofDM4

wtf - no wonder the kids are fkt up nowadays

You just can't convey how lecherous Pigsy is via a cartoon.

        • +1

"She's so delicious I could drink her bathwater!"

  • loved watching these years ago on ABC, what kid didn't like kung-fu?

      A certain Sydney Swans player?

  • +5

Oh yeah i was watching this show back in the 1980's. I could of sworn it was called Monkey Magic back in those days.

    • +1

Yeh, I remember it as Monkey Magic as well - but it's quite possible that because the theme song was 'Monkey Magic' I might be remembering that instead!

I followed this series since it first aired during "Recovery" on ABC.

I'm almost certain that it was never officially called "Monkey Magic" and always called "Monkey".

        • Remember it in the '80's after school staple :)

        • +4

I guess it was sort of unofficially known to the kids back in those days as Monkey Magic. This was one of the shows we watched after school besides the classic Doctor Who.

        • +3

Back in the 80s and early 90s it was on The Afternoon Show with James Valentine and then Michael Tunn … predates Recovery by quite some time.

And yes, it was always just 'Monkey' officially.

        • I always referred to it as Monkey Magic back in primary school as well.

Google it appears, also knows it better as "Monkey Magic" when searching :).

Here is the intro. lol. It's a japanese tv show from the 80's. Have a bit of a laugh at the episode intro video.

  • Any how this box set is cheap. The boxed version sold at JB HI-FI is $99.99 but strangely it's on 16 DVD's as opposed to the 13 DVD's from the one off Amazon UK. I guess is because the one from JB is a collector's edition.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/tv/monkey-the-…

    • According to that link, the collectors edition has only 720 mins of viewing as opposed to 2340 for the boexed set on amazon UK.

      • That can't be right as the Collector's Edition has 3 extra DVD's so they can't be filled up with nothingness.

Yes that 720 hours noted on on the JB website is wrong. It's actually 2160 minutes according to mightyape. It also includes all 52 episodes. But then again this Collector's Edition costs twice as much as this bog standard box set from Amazon UK. But then again the Collector's Edition box set from JB HI-FI is region 4 DVD so guaranteed to play on any region 4 DVD player.

This has got to go down in history as one of the most enjoyable retellings of the venerable Journey to the West.

I was quite sad some years ago to hear that Tripitaka (Masako Natsume) passed away due to leukemia in the mid 80's at the tender young age of 27. Anybody fortunate to have seen her outside of the monk garb would have been very surprised to see that not only was she very feminine, but also quite beautiful.

    • +13

She was indeed beautiful. She was meant to be a man in the show. I was a very confused teenager.

  • Does it have English Subtitle? It's a must for me as I am hearing impaired.

      Amazon review…

      Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Monkey! - The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)
Many happy years of television after school are being relived with this massive boxed set. Unfortunately anyone with a hearing impairment will not be able to enjoy the first three episodes on each DVD as there are no subtitles available.

  • Thanks OP, ordered through your link… I'm gonna be the coolest person in the world once this gets delivered :D

  • All the episode titles would make great porn film names lol

    • as your name would make a great porno actors nick.

      …to the wrist, Risto.

Does anyone else remember this childish lyric when the series first ran, a loooong time ago:…?

    Monkey is spunky
    and Pigsy is fat,
    Sandy's a pansy
    and Master is Kojak!

..why doesn't my brain store more useful information. :)

    • I remembered them as that also until I got the album a few years ago… I don't know what I heard back then but it doesn't even sound anything like that… maybe there was something in the water back then (or a lack of internet nerds to correct us ;) )

      • Yeh I got the lp soundtrack as well …… But that was a long time ago. Where did the years go.

  • You lazy swine

  • Awesome deal. I already have the 13 dvds and will now drag them out for the memories.

The series i have doesn't end though. Apparently they couldnt translate the whole series. I remember watching monkey in Japan about 10 years ago. It was an episode I had never seen!

Would be great to get them all subbed into English.

    • I remember hearing about 10 years ago that a group was eventually able to get the original voice actors back to dub over the remaining episodes. How true this is though, I cannot say.

      • Wikipedia tells me this is true!!
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_(TV_series)

      • It's true and I have the earlier release of these DVDs from about 8 years ago or so. Have to say I'm disappointed with the voice acting on the remaining episodes but fair play to original voice actors who were quite old at the time. I believe the guy who played Pigsy passed away not long after dubbing his part for these episodes.

  • if only there was someway to type monkey calling for his cloud….

    • Yup, it almost defies the laws of phonology. ;)

  • Is the region two an issue?

    • +1

It is if your player can't play region 2 DVD.

      • How do you know if your dvd player can play region 2?

        • put a region 2 DVD in your player. if it plays, it can play region 2.

        • I tried that with arrested development (region 1 i think)… Didnt work… Costly experiment…

        • Google for region-free coding on whatever model DVD player you have.. Very few players are completely restricted nowadays.

And if by chance yours doesn't support region-free, you can pickup DVD players from super cheap stores all the time - and they almost always unlock.

        • @eevee888

GVA multi zone DVD player from TGG is a good buy if you have to get one.
