nothing against the post, but amazon/audible suck that they make you download some crap software/app to listen to your free book
I kinda agree, but the Audible app makes it pretty easy to manage the free audio books that are always floating around, especially if you want to 'buy' them and then not download for ages.

My first encounter with Audible.
Unfriendly Windows software which is laden with DRM like amazon's Kindle is, except far harder to get working. Restricted portable playback options unless you want to live in the Audible cocoon of approved apps and devices (I want to save the file to a device that connects as a USB mass storage device, not proprietary restricted garbage that phones home). If it weren't for free content I'd never install this app, and never did until now.
Downloading the Audible file through my browser didn't open up the app automatically; I had to browse to the app to show Opera which app to open it, otherwise it would download an admhelper file of 292 bytes instead..
Dumb. I have grabbed the file but I feel like I have been locked up and the key thrown away. It amazes me this format is apparently popular.
I am very grateful for the freebie though.

The book should be free if you use the links or search terms above. With Audible you can normally listen to something you own on a variety of devices, see here for details.

There are ways to get other formats from the Audible format, which basically come back to 'burning' the file to iso/disc, then converting the CD audio into mp3/off/whatever. You'll have to find some instructions - just Google it.
How do you actually download the files?
When you have purchased the book, install the Audible player program or app (Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, maybe more) and it will appear in your library for download and listening.
