BenQ W1070 3D Full HD Home Theatre Projector $925 + $16.99 Delivery

60

Been looking at this projector for a while now, just have never bitten the bullet. The price for PCNtech is $941.99 Delivered. I brought it for $894.89 from Officeworks with their price guarantee. Nearly got it for $925 less 5%($878.75), but a more experienced staff member jumped in on the sale. You might be luckier than I.

Gets good reviews pretty much everywhere. $1099 RRP is a good price for a Full HD projector, but this price is awesome.

Throw in fact its 3D(does not come with glasses, but compatible glasses come quite cheap at $32.99 delivered for 2 pairs from here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2x-New-96-144Hz-tech-SainSonic-Re…), and it has Lens shift

  • Please refrain from using OW price matching prices in title. price matching is not considered a deal.

  • Got this projector about 2 months ago! its amazing. Well worth its value, and got it price matched at OW for $880.00. Currently using it on 120'' attached to my PS3 (which is network attached to my NAS and PC) as well as Apple TV for my ios and osx devices.

    • good to hear. have you tried the 3d?

  • Sorry if this seems a naive question but are projectors good value for money? Factoring total cost of ownership with power consumption, bulbs etc, I'm curious if say, over 5 years, would it be cheaper and arguably just as good to buy a huge TV instead of a projector.

Or is it just a matter of personal taste, i.e. 'A huge TV still isn't the size of the wall, and I want my entire wall to be picture'?

no comparison at this price point but buy the aldi benq ms502($199) and project to a much smaller screen size. its brighter and longer lamp life than OP's deal.
watch the footy with its fast moving artefact prone video and it negates the need for supposed HD.
watch a projector for all TV viewing and/or during the day and you are burning money.
BTW I look at my $2000 5 year old fat bezel non smart flatscreen as so superceeded. its at the end of its life and realistically electronically it will likely fail any time now.
Im off to stream 640x360 of the union game, is this where the future of TV is at now, IPTV watch what you want when you want?

  • I got the w1060 for $545 refurb it's going great and looks great.

Wondering if the w1070 is 120hz?

That's the only thing I dislike about the w1060 it has wicked judder that I had to get used to

  • Owning this (and the previous W1060) I'd say the projector is pretty hard to beat bang for buck - it's exceptionally good as a games projector, the 6X colour wheel minimises rainbows - its still there but significantly less obvious than on the W1060 … Cross talk on 3d is as far as I can tell (even looking right up to the projected surface) non existent… I own the sainsonic glasses - which are okay, but the true 3d ones are better (admittedly they are more expensive but do a better job blocking out the red sync pulse as well as slightly better colour performance).

My only issue with it is the noise - it's not the quietest projector on the planet - owning to its somewhat smaller size and the target audience - when playing a game or your room has good acoustics you'll be most happy.

As for the question if its 120hz, I believe in 3d mode it runs at 144hz - you can hear the colour wheel changing speed as it cycles between 3d, 24hz, 50hz, 25hz, 60hz etc (you get the idea)…

    • Hi digitalaxon
Just doing some research whether to spend 5k on a TV or 2k on a PJ setup.
You mention sound being an issue, with hindsight would you go a different option?
      Cheers!

  • You guys are making it preeeettyyyyy tempting… I've got a theater room just waiting to be set up and eventually I was going to have to decide between a TV or a projector…

  • Also own this and matched at OW a few months ago.

Can't say I've spent a lot of time with it but the time I have has been great.

Just bought my audio set up so I hope to be getting a bit more time with it asap!

I have had the projector since February (also a price match with OW using the Penta Group price). I have over 500 hours of use so far. This projector is excellent, especially in 3D mode.

I would suggest AVOIDING the Sansonic glasses at all costs, except perhaps as spares for visitors or kids (uncomfortable and lose sinc with the projector regularly). Pay just a little more and get a better result. I have the ones listed in the following link and they are very comfortable and work really well (no red flash and resinc automatically), about AU$55 for 2 pair posted. I have the Sainsonic and don't use them. Don't bother with the genuine Benq glasses either as they are very expensive here around $150 each and are uncomfortable.

Please note ONLY 144hz DLP-LINK 3D Glasses work with this projector:

As far as TV vs projector debate. Nothing but nothing beats a 120" screen in 3D!! The movies jump out of the screen. Running costs are low and the replacement lamps can be had here in Aus for under $200. So for say 3000 hours it is pretty good. Note that the publicity information says 6000+ hours for the lamp but you will not get this in reality as you need to be running in 2D only and in eco mode only to get anything near this.

      • YES!!! Good find, even cheaper than mine.

        They also have a 4 set (2 x White and 2 x Black) deal.

        • Maybe a stupid question. But I don't have my glasses yet and can't properly test 3d. I put my ps3 in 1080p 24hz, then put the projector into 3d frame packing mode. Is it supposed to look so green?

        • Put simply …. NO! no mode should be green, red yes green no. If it is red then your 3D glasses are faulty as the W1070 (and W1080ST) project red when in 3D mode and viewed without glasses and dark or black scene is present. Sorry I don't have a PS3 to check settings, I do understand some people have had issues but they are readily solved, go to the AVSForum pages and search.

Suggest you check the HDMI cable (or other cable) used and check out other resolutions.

        • I havent got the 3d glasses yet, was just checking to see if I could get 3d to function. Put The Lorax on in 3d on my Playstation, set to 1080p 24hz. Then put framepacking on on the projector. Where there is black, it is red yes. But the main image has a green tint to it. Was just checking now while the projector is brand new and would be able to return it if DOA.

        • +1

It is up to you re the DOA replacement. I cannot help you any further, as I do not have a PS3, sorry. But according to the Benq Australia site the projector has a 2 year warranty so that gives you plenty of time if there should be a problem. They usually replace with a new unit if there is a problem. If it is functioning well, i.e. no green in 2D and it gives the double image in 3D then all should be fine but no guarantees. Can you take it and the PS3 to the store/dealer who sold it to you and have them check it using 3d glasses? Also, you could give Benq a call and ask about the problem via their technical line. At least that logs a potential problem with them, making replacement easier in the future. You could try asking on AVSForum. Good luck.

  • Me like! Me want!

  • why aren't companies using LED as a light sourcce? its last much longer and possibly better quality image? plus runs much cooler.

  • Thanks. I just went and bought one from Officeworks and asked them to price match the pcntech price which they did.
