All prices are taken from MSY, unless stated otherwise in the brackets.

    $342 CPU: Intel 4770
    $149 MB: Gigabyte Z87-HD3
    $130 RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Kingston 1600MHz
$99 SSD: Sandisk Ultra Plus 128G
    $69 HD: 1TB WD 7200RPM ~~ Assuming Green.
    $489 Graphics: Gainward 2G GTX770 Phantom (Umart/MWave/iiBuy from Staticice)
    $19 OD: Samsung 24X
    $51 Case: Coolermaster K350
    ~$99-105 PSU: Corsair 600CXM Modular 600W (CPL/Scorptec)

    Total: $1424 + Assembly costs.

*Do you need an i7? An i5 will suffice for gaming.
*The pairing of a Z87 motherboard and non-K series chip means you will not be able to overclock your CPU i.e. the Z87 is just an extra added cost as opposed to getting a B85/H87 motherboard (reduces the value for money aspect)
*A WD Green drive is fine for storage, but on a per terabyte basis, a 2TB drive is cheaper per/TB (spending money to "save" money. :P)
*Case… how come every computer deal that pops up on OzBargain has the K350? Are retailers getting a Coolermaster rebate for offloading them or something?
*PSU: meh, could be better. It's not a 1000W beast so the excess cables will be minimal anyway, so a modular PSU offers little additional benefit. But then again, going in the K350, modular might be a luxury. :P

Thanks mate, you are always the first :)

      1. Z87 will also allow SLI/xFire

      2. The HDD is WD Blue. (It was my fault, I should make it more clear)

      3. K350 is a solid, cost effective case which also can house long graphics cards

    • +1

      Great reply WorkAround.
I'm definitely looking around for a new PC for gaming purposes and with your response I'm a little turned off by this deal.

I guess I'll keep looking around for other specs that would work best for me.

      • If you know nothing about computers, this is a good deal. Did you see that WorkAround totalled the cost from MSY and this is $85 cheaper.

        • It's desktop computers, and specifically for gaming that I don't know a lot about. (Talk to me about server hardware and I'll be all over the top of it) I don't really know what SLi is, do I need to consider that?

The GPU is the part that gets me every time I research. Most forums seem to discuss 7950 vs 670, but this is a 770 so it's thrown another spanner into the works.

It seems an i5 is more often recommended for gaming, so that's another part of this post that helped.
I don't care much for overclocking so not needed.

        • No, I wouldn't worry about SLi. SLi is the ability to have two nVidia graphics cards in the one system. If you're not obsessed by getting the maximum possible framerate then you don't need it.

The 770 is a good graphics card. It'll play any game atm with max settings and should be fine for quite a long time.

If you're looking for a gaming system without building it yourself and this fits your budget then it's definitely a good choice.

    • *Do you need an i7? An i5 will suffice for gaming.

What about CPU-intensive games like Guild Wars 2?

    • This is a great price. I however, spent much of my fund on other bargains.
I know this is jacking the thread a little, but could someone be kind enough to advice on my build before the EOFY.

      $129 CPU: i3-3220
      $79 M/B: Asrock H77-PRO4-MVP
      $81 RAM: 8G 1600- G.SkillRipjaws-X
$99 SSD: Sandisk Ultra Plus 128G
      $69 HD: 1TB WD 7200RPM
      $19 OD: Samsung 24X
$51 Case: Coolermaster K350 maybe a NZXT phantom 410 white<—-are they worthwhile for their price?
      $59 Corsair CX430 V3
Carry over from my old systems ATI7770, maybe a new VGA card at Christmas.
      Total $586

      My purposes
-Use office alot, boot computers twice a day(want fast boot and read).
      -Casual Gamer, no overclock.
-Want this to be my rig at least for another 3 years. Pass it on to family members afterwards.

      Questions
      1. My build is half the price of the OP's, would it also by half the performance in games? If not, how much %?
      2. For office works and boot times should it be comparable?
      3. Is the 1155 socket still worth it at this price point?

      Thanking the Ozbargain community *salute

      • +2

No, this wouldn't be half the performance in games. It's probably more like a quarter of the performance. Here's a comparison of the GPUs: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/536?vs=555 (this is using a GTX 680 as they haven't listed the 770, but the 680 & 770 perform similarly). The 7770 is about a third of the 680, and when you add in the difference in CPUs you'll probably get a quarter of the performance.

For office tasks, it'll perform similarly (mostly disk bound, and you have an SSD that will do the job fine).

Edit: Just found that they do have the 770 in a different section: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/777?vs=829. As mentioned, fairly similar to the 680 (slight advantage to the 770 if you compare those two: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/777?vs=829).

        • Thank you so much for shedding the light on GPU performance.
Looks like a new GPU for Christmas it is.

1150 Vs 1155, is it worth while to go for Haswell setup for

          i5-4670 $245

          Vs

          i5-3570 $228

Is the $50 premium worth it(considering also the extra M/B differnce)?

        • If it's just light gaming, then probably not. However for $50 for a system to last 3+ years, maybe it's worth getting the slight performance boost.

    • So Workaround, could you recommend a good gaming rig - I need to buy one before end of financial year, and only saw this after it expired.
      Where should I buy it?

I'd modestly overclock it if it was easy enough to do.

Should I buy an operating system, or use the one I have acquired?

      Thanks for any help

    • +2

The SSD should offset the slowness of the green drive :)
But it does say 7200RPM in the specifications, and green drives are not 7200RPM.

But yeah, I would at least get a Seagate 2TB 7200.12.

        • +8

If your windows installation (sans-programs) is using 64GB then you really need to reconsider what you're doing with your life.

        • +4

Just checked my Windows folder and it's 46GB atm. ProgramData adds another 8GB, and Users/AppData adds another 8GB.

Even if you install all your apps on another drive, 60GB+ for OS managed data is pretty easy to achieve.

        • Bear in mind a 128gb drive doesn't have 128gb of accessible space….

So if windows is 46gb it's probably approaching half of the actual usable space on a 128gb drive already…

        • Although I agree in theory to what you are saying, 46GB was one users example of his Windows install not an average overall. Mine is more like 20GB. In this price range, the user probably isn't going to have a need for a bigger SSD.

        • My windows is 21.9gb after disabling hibernation (not needed on a desktop) and moving my paging file to my secondary drive…

However much ram you have is wasted in a hibernation file, so google how to disable it and you'll free up that much worth of disk space :)

Also, 128gb is HEAPS for an ssd.. I have a 60gb one and it fits plenty of games (bf3, skyrim, etc) with heaps of room to spare.

      • I thought so at first as well.

But honestly, if I was to buy another gaming rig it would be strictly for gaming and/or video editing. Anything else would only be on there temporary and offloaded to the HP N40L ASAP.

Lets me pick up other devices in the house and have access to all my content.

Nice price CPL, am becoming very tempted by these frequent deals!

Mah bad, missed the 7200RPM in the description… When I see WD I assume Green. :P

Well a 1TB Blue is $67 compared to $69 for the Green so… not much difference.

The Z87 will allow SLI/Crossfire but then you can make your dollar go further if you either "downgrade" to an i5 4670K or upgrade to an i7 4770K. Also, the 600W PSU may or may not be cutting it close for a SLI/Crossfire setup (depending on who you ask). So your motherboard says overclock, your CPU says no. Your motherboard says SLI/Crossfire, your PSU says no.

So the motherboard isn't the best choice, but then considering the overall savings on the system, some may be willing to let that slide.

Also, if I was going to do anything serious like a SLI/Crossfire setup, I wouldn't trust the single 120mm front fan that the K350 comes with to keep things cool. It's got other mounting options (but they're all 120mm mounts, besides the rear which can accommodate smaller sizes). So, the case is wishy-washy. You can spend a little more and get a lot more from other Antec/Coolermaster cases IMO.

        • As above, the motherboard specified doesn't support SLI.

        • Well shucks didn't even realise. :S

Looks like it's still more economical to buy Ivy Bridge if you want to overclock/run more than 1 GPU. :S

Haswell doesn't seem to be worth it yet with the higher cost for a new CPU/motherboard. :x

        • Yeah, if you're going to overclock then it definitely doesn't look worth it to get Haswell. Multi GPUs without OC might be worth it, kinda borderline.

Personally I'm using an i5 750 and still don't have any reason to upgrade. Once you've got pretty much any Intel quad core CPU (with Core architecture) the CPU just isn't that important for gaming.

    • +3

Green drives aren't slow at all. I wish people would stop perpetuating that BS.
They're fast enough to flood SATA3.0Gbps so what the hell does it matter?

      • I agree that green drives aren't slow, but they're certainly not fast enough to saturate a 3Gbps connection. Even Blue/Black drives don't. Only SSDs are in that range.

      • -3

Negaston sorry but u are wrong. Their startup and seek times are much slower - plus they tend to have power management features that switch them off and then they have to physically restart before they can be accessed.

I'm running 8 PC's here with about 40 hard disks. None are green.

I know from experience green drives blow…

        • +4

If none of your 40 disks are green, then that doesn't exactly give you much experience with them, does it?

If you're using them as an OS drive, then yes, green drives suck. But for storage / games, they're really not that bad. And this is coming from someone who has used green drives for those purposes.

        • FOS

        • They are all non-green because I've had green in the past and they have sucked.

I note the drive is actually a 7200rpm non-green drive - good choice CPL

  • +5

WorkAround you're an absolute legend mate thanks for breaking it down for us not-so-savy enthusiasts.

  • +20

they should deduct $2 and make it $1337, that would wake up some kids

    • +4

It was, until they added the carbon tax. Thanks Julia.

    • +6

cpl … do it. call it the L33T Deal

      • +1

Unfortunatley it's 2 far from the leet deal xd

  • So would this be capable of running all modern games on max settings?

  • Hi CPL,

Just wondering if I can still buy this deal that you had last week (the $999 PC)? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107089

    Thanks

    • Still waiting for my order from that last one (but added HD7970 - cos its just worth it!) - will give you full review of service/sales and product once I get it.
It was a day missed out so the price is back up to their normal price.

      • Hi Dnkei, Can you please provide me with the order number? I will check it for you.

      • Hi Dnkei, just wondering if you have received it yet? How have you found it?
Did you get it shipped interstate? (Im getting mine shipped to Sydney)
        Thanks!

    • Sorry, this deal has been expired.

      • Ok Thanks, looking forward to another deal that's similar to that then.
        Great deals you have here!

  • I am thinking about buying this however I don't like the look of the case could I upgrade to a different one and pay the difference.

    • Hi Jim, please email to [email protected] and I will try to sort it out for you. Thanks.

  • -2

Why is it that every single computer deal thread is full of whingers!

This is good enough for 99% of everything. Is it the absolute best, no. Is it the best of everything you can get for a similar price, maybe not. But its still cheaper than doing it yourself.

    • +2

A bit of hyperbole there. The only person I saw actually complaining was GreatWhiteHunter about the drive, and even then he wasn't sure what the drive actually was, and he still plus'd the deal.

      • The deal was good. My point was you wouldn't put a low performance, slow "green" drive in a "gaming" pc…

Can't argue with the value of the CPL deals at all. Looking forward to the next one dropping very soon…

  • -2

    Expired already!

Smells likethe old bait and switch routine to me…

    • It was a 1 day sale…

    • The OP clearly stated payment had to be made yesterday. It's not bait & switch if they're upfront about the terms & availability.

    • -2

The deal was posted at 10.22am
It was marked expired at 14:05!

      Who knows how many units?

It pulls people to the website, so free advertising.
Perhaps if you watch Ozbargain 24/7, you could have got one.

      • It was posted at 10:22 AM, lasted over 6 hours and marked expired at 4:43 PM, which is pretty much the end of a working day. Don't complain just because you missed out.

        • -1

          Looks like 2pm to me…
My working day is longer than 3 1/2 hrs.

          cplonline on 24/06/2013 - 14:05
Sorry, this deal has been expired

        • I was going off the time the deal itself expired. Regardless, it was available for several hours, and given how popular it was it's not surprising that limited stock wouldn't last long.

        • Lonepine the 2:05pm comment about a deal being closed was actually referring to a different deal - the deal that comment refers to was the $999 PC build….

This deal closed at 4:43pm on OzBargain - not sure when CPL closed orders on their web site…

      • +1

        Seriously? Suck it up buddy.

      • +1

I have some sympathy for your views as stocks are severely limited and the deal runs for only a few hours.

Having said that, its a lot better than the DSE deals we constantly see that sell out in 10 minutes.

The better the deal, the quicker they are gonna sell out.

If you want advanced notice of CPL Ozbargain deals, like them on Facebook - they tell you in advance that they are going to be posting an Ozbargain deal - they expect to post 2 today (26/6) one for lightning adaptors, another for a gaming rig….

        • -1

OK, thanks for the helpful advice.

I find these super fast deals a gimmick, and wonder how many units they are really selling. I suppose some people have the time to watch out for them.

I've found a lot of other good deals on this site however. Its all fun.

I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, even if I'd got into that 3 hour window, as I'm still researching.

        • +1

As pointed out by GreatWhiteHunter above, the deal actually did close at 4:43 PM. The comment at 2PM was a reply regarding a different deal. So please stop suggesting it was only available for 3 hours.
