Weird, won't let me edit title
The 16GB soldered RAM ruins it :(
With a Radeon 780M 24GB would make so much more sense as you could allocate 8GB to the GPU and still have 16GB leftover for the rest of the system.
Yes, unfortunately newer models don't even have 780m on ryzen 7
I will say while the price and specs are good while it works, this laptop did nothing to dispell my long held opinion that Acer cheap out on quality. Bought one Easter last year and it has already failed.
Hopefully mine lasts longer. Does not get much use so fingers crossed.
In what way? Were you able to get a replacement?
True, I purchased an Acer very long time ago and it was very cheap build quality.
I mostly purchase HP which even the budget $700 laptops seems to be of decent quality. My choice are Premium Lenovo models and ASUS
That's disappointing to hear. I've got a swift 3 from 8 years ago still going strong but not constantly used. It's not eligible for Windows 11 which is a shame though.
I've had 2 family members in the last few years have the casing straight up perish where the hinges screw in. The whole laptop just gradually fell apart. The plastic was thin and literally crumbling despite an easy life. Acer Spin 3.
I'm concerned about the slim and light build. Will it lead to thermal throttling and impact the Ryzen 7's performance
If running silent fan mode option then yes, otherwise no. It's cooling is on the weaker side but it's a very efficient chip.
Review says this has around 5-6 hrs battery life when web browsing. I'm sick of having to be tethered to a wall socket, are there any alternatives with better battery life at this price point, or is this as good as it gets with windows laptops?
This model only has 54wh unlike old 65wh model so not as good but is a very efficient chip so unless you want to spend double on laptops with the new AI 350 chips or core ultra 2 this is pretty good. Or if possible arm snapdragon variant will be a step up in battery life.
It costs a bit more (cheapest ive seen is ~1250) and only has a 1900x1200 IPS screen but the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 should have much better battery life (with the snapdragon cpu)
Yeah I assumed the snapdragon ones would be a lot better. I'm not sure how good windows on ARM is at the moment, but I need to be able to run x86 applications without issues, so I don't know if I'm ready to make the transition just yet.

Your answer is Snapdragon - whilst the options are not quite at this price yet, they're getting pretty darn close.
If you are willing to go macOS, then there really is no competition at the moment in terms of efficiency - my M4 MBA lasts over 10 hours easily whilst web browsing, and it's genuinely freeing. The way I would describe it is that it's like using a phone - you just charge it when you need to charge it, you never really have to think about being "strategic" with the charging (i.e. the whole "I have a meeting soon in a room that doesn't have a charge socket, so I better plug it in before lunch" thing)
You can easily get a M2 MBA for close to $1,000 (pretty sure I saw a deal here recently), and M3 / M4 models are not a huge lot more for what they offer. I definitely prefer Windows, and I curse out macOS every second day, but the hardware is really that good that I just put up with the stupid design decisions of macOS.
Used MBA M2s is just $700. Used M3s $1000. Getting a used MBA M2 for $1000 is just a ripoff.
This is the really good deal where they forgot half the RAM. Much better off with the recent Lenovo Ryzen deals
Got the HP Aero although no OLED display, the build is solid and gives a premium appearance < 1Kg
HP Pavilion Aero 13.3" QHD, AMD Ryzen 5 8640U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Storage Silver $759.20 Delivered
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/911238How's the battery life? It's seems to be out of stock now, the cheapest on eBay is $949 now. Which is better? This Acer or the HP (as they are similar price now).
I only got it two weeks ago and I have not tested the battery life so I can not say its super good.
I have only had the need to work on battery for about 3 hours mainly office workUnless you need a laptop today I would wait as you should be able to get the R7 or similar for around $950 for R5 or similar for around $800. I would not touch an Acer unless the quality has improved lately which you need to check with those currently using an Acer
What is the battery level after 3 hours of office work? (My son's school wants one that can last 6 - 8 hours and battery will only get worst over time)
I have this and it gets hot. Especially just under screen area.
Same. Mine overheats and restarts when playing games.
had mine since 11/24 deal . added a 2tb nvme to the hidden 2nd slot, use daily just browsing the net screen on 1 level below middle brightness , it goes for 10hrs. ok for light gaming on low settings eg dota , d4. fans loud if turned to the max for gaming.
Bought last Xmas from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879305
It’s fine for light use but overheats when playing games. Fans go crazy and windows restarts when under heavy load. This one or Core i5?
This
Wow 100 bucks. Locked in 100 then.
