B&H knocks another $50 US dollars off the price of the unit since I posted last time.

local retail prices with kit lens
Ted's: $799.95 http://www.teds.com.au/panasonic-lumix-g5
Digital Camera Warehouse: $949 http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod9293.htm
CameraHouse: $999 http://www.camerahouse.com.au/products/Compact-Pro-Cameras-1…

alternative package
What's that you say? You want 2 lenses? Don't mind silver? No problem. B&H has the DMC-G5 with a silver 45mm-150mm bundled along with the kit lens. It's a 90-300mm equivalent in 35mm terms. Even greater savings at $448 USD for the lot (before delivery). So that's USD $100 for the extra lens. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/992559-REG/panasonic_l…

retail hilarity
Want the DMC-G5 body-only and crave some retail hilarity? $499 USD as I write this :) You're paying more for just the body. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/889677-REG/Panasonic_d…

Stock must be cleared out to make way for the overpriced DMC-G6 ;)
Enjoy.

  • just a quick question: this one and nikon v1, which one is better?
I'm a newbie in the camera and photography areas, so please be gently

    • Better depends on your needs.
      Both are very good.

Picture-quality-wise (and comfort-wise), I would argue the Panasonic is better in most instances. Where Nikon V1 is clearly better is for its continuous autofocus (in good light) and its hi-speed capture modes. For example, if you want to fire off 60 shots a second (with focus and exposure locked at the same setting as the first shot), you can with the Nikon V1 (!) - by using the relevant Electronic (Hi) setting in the camera. It's continuous autofocus talents are good too, but after-dark though, the Nikon is nothing special as far as autofocus goes, in my opinion.

Usability-wise, I prefer a body like that seen in the DMC-G5 here and find the V1 a bit block-ish to hold; it's not as comfortable to me. But everyone's different. Take-home point: I love the hi-speed electronic shutter of the V1 (and it's deep buffers) as well as some of its focusing talents for moving subjects, but I prefer the Panasonic for just about everything else, including a more standard hot-shoe so I can buy flash units from many manufacturers (as well as more direct controls).

But your needs & wants could vary.

  • Anything that can produce 1080p video like this has to be worth more than $350(ex. P/H)…, Excellent Price !

    EDIT: A few samples Here

  • While you certainly ought to take these comparison sites with a grain of salt, they're handy at a glance to compare and contrast the obvious differences:

    • beat me by 39sec…, I feel like buying this now… :)

      • Yeah, it's a real killer price for a ripper M4/3 camera with two lenses.

    cool guys!!! Thanks!

  • how about this one comparing to Sony Rx100?(I am a newbie with cameras). Thanks

  • Does Panasonic provide international warranty ?

    • No, it does not.

      • I guess you have to decide if the warranty is worth $350. B&H seem like a good company and so the cost of postal return must be considered as part of the purchase. Mind you the past 5 cameras I have bought never had any issues so you just have to be unlucky I guess to get a dud. From the reviews this camera is highly rated and with the 45-150 lens its a great package for a really low price.

        • Yeah.

I only ever had to return 1 item to them (and it wasn't a camera).

From about 20 or so orders of various items per order. I'd rather deal with them than 99.9% of Australian stores, to be honest. I get professional & courteous service from them every time.

Australia Post will price-gouge when you have to send something back of course, but aside from that, smooth sailing. I honestly think I'd be up for more hassles locally, and about the same wait.

The savings made by buying from them are truly up there. Warranty never even comes into the equation for me.

  • I just ordered
The exchange rate is a rip off!!! USD 500.06=> AUD 572.15 ( damn you, Paypal). Holy molly.
But at least the price is still good, so im waiting for my first camera now ^^.

    • B&H never used to accept PayPal from Australian users. I only noticed they did yesterday while shopping on their site.

Definitely worthwhile getting a debit card or credit card for bigger-ticket items like this: PayPal are terrible. Congrats on the cam :)

    • From xe.com USD $500.07 should be AUD $544.70. So they're making around 5% commission on the xfer which is not too bad is it ? (I'm paying more to a property manager and they don't do much for it). What's the best way to get a good exchange rate ?

My camera arrived last Monday and it's very good. It's for the wife and more suited to small hands as I find it a little compact to hold. She is a bit overwhelmed with it as she has only used a point and shoot in the past. Very happy with purchase. We also bought a Lowepro Apex 120 bag which holds the camera and 45-150 zoom lens perfectly. I would suggest buying a spare battery from B&H as the price is good for the genuine Panasonic one. From what I have read the non genuine batteries have some issues.
