Just wanted to say that the GS2 can be updated to Android 4.1.2, with 4.2.2 being the last firmware update yet to come, as indicated by Samsung.

It's a great phone, can't go wrong with it. However, do note that since Android Jelly Bean (v4.x) came out, battery life has taken quite a hit.

Yes, battery life is really bad now with JB.

      • I have to agree on this, noticed the dip.

    • WRT battery issues, I tried the app 'battery defender' and it has served me well (android version 4.1.2 on S2).
App is still free on google play

      • Being an Ozbargainer, I am using Vaya. Just a note for anyone that uses Vaya or any provider which calculate data to the nearest mb, the data usage will be heaps as there will be lots of switching between on and off of data connection.

        • Well thats for juice defender not sure about battery defender

  • There are some success stories rooting SII to improve battery performance in whirlpool forums.

The reasons to get SG II at this price and not to get Nexus 4 (8G) are, a) huge Sammy fan boy , but if that's the case why not go for S IV and b) 4g capacity but there are plenty of 4g handsets…

  • I can also attest to heaps better battery life on cut down android roms on these phones, however I have experienced Bluetooth issues on anything above 4.1.2 (Tried multiple ROMS @ 4.2.2 to no avail)Whereas if I stay on 4.1.2 genuine update from Samsung, all Bluetooth works flawlessly, battery life also is increased greatly over stock out of the box rom.

the s2 4G is difficult to get root and risks to put cm10 4.2.2 on

the most i've gotten on stable is a cm10 4.1.2 rom and i almost bricked it and disabled the capacitive buttons

so for anyone who wants rom/root, even if you have experience just be careful this aint ease process for this particular spec of s2, even after ive successfully put the rom on the phone was abit buggy, there is element of gamble here that bears no relation to your skill or experience.

did went for quite abit over ebay though

    • correct. i tried with my one as well.

    • It took a while but i have 4.2.2 running on my old one. Its mostly stable. There is quite a good post on XDA about Rooting and Custom roms for the i9210T.

I however just bought the Nexus 4 and i'm not looking back

The One XL from Telstra was $355 a few weeks back… why would you take this over that?

  • JB Hifi have had the same price for this mobile phone for weeks and still do.

S II? o_O, please do yourself a favor just get a Nexus 4 if you are ready to spend that amount. Seriously.

    The nexus 4 isn't 4g is it?

  • Any opinions on whether to go with the Galaxy S2, or the new Galaxy Express? I'm upgrading from a HTC Wildfire S, so both are better than what I have now.

    • The fact that you're looking at the Galaxy Express probably means that you are looking at a plan, because if you're looking for a 4G phone off contract it only costs $50 online extra for a Galaxy S3 4G. If you're going on a plan, I'd recommend getting the Xperia SP over these two for $35 a month with Virgin/Vodafone.
If you're going with Optus, it would be incredibly stupid to chose these two phones as Optus plans with these start at $50 a month, and you can get something high-end at that price point.
The Xperia SP has the 8 megapixel camera of the S2, with the 4G of the Express, but with faster internals and a bigger and higher resolution screen.

  • Mate told me that he walked into a Vodafone shop and bought unlocked S2 outright for $300 two weeks ago.
I have not confirmed this myself but if you are looking at this phone it may be worth checking Vodafone first.
