        • Rep: PM sent and I didn't get $50 voucher for last SSD purchased, I sent email on Wednesday and no response.

        • +1

Rep: Thanks for your quick response.

  • Cant beat $160 like last time?

    • i think the last time it was lowered to compete with another deal.

      my target price is <$150!

  • So tempted to put in my alienware laptop. This would offer significant performance increase from the 5400rpm stasndard drive?

    • +6

You wont believe how much faster boot up etc is!

    • +6

You will regret….on why you did not do it ages ago!

    • It won't really help your gaming experience (in-game), but for pretty much everything else an SSD upgrade is by far the most bang for buck.

      • +3

it will help your gaming experience if games are installed to the SSD….the game, the maps everything is loaded many times faster than a standard HDD, graphics wont be better but load times will be

    • Okay done! Now to wait for it to turn up… :)

  • Tempting but i'm going to wait for a deal on 512GB before I bother rebuilding my whole system around an SSD.

    • +2

:) its better to have two 256Gb SSD's then 1 single 512Gb for the same price.

As you get more speed out of the 256Gb drives and if your writing/reading on both at the same time your getting twice the speed.

Also if one ever fails then you still have the other.
One could be an OS/Apps drive and the other dedicated just for games.
Power usage and heat is next to Zero so having 2 is no problems.

      • if youre talking about raid 0
then your point about one failing doesnt apply

i believe if one fails you lose data on both (But can reformat the good one)

        correct me if im wrong

        • "One could be an OS/Apps drive and the other dedicated just for games"

you didnt get that i was talking about two drives from this one line?.. raid is pointless on SSD's and reduces the life allot

      • I see your point but I need all the space on one volume, so 2 drives would have to be in raid and then i'd have double the failure exposure. Say 80-100 for system/apps then the rest is for a studio production folder with massive libraries that needs more than 256. 512 would be a nice 100/400 split.

      • +1

If you use one as a OS drive and one for games you haven't doubled your speed. You've doubled your maximum potential speed, which will only be noticed when you copy large amounts of data from one SSD to the other.

If you're not super sorted then you'll also loose hours of life checking which partition you stored info on.

If you don't have SATA 6gbps then during full load you will only see performance decreases from having two SSD's.

You also need two SSD brackets (which can even be a problem in some newer computer cases).

I'ld honestly prefer one SSD for these reasons.

  • Yeah the 512ssd for the PS3……

    • i would rather put that into a PS4 as its overkill for a PS3

    • +1

I thought there was no real difference for the ps3?
Stuck on the old connection to have any gains in load times etc.
Even with games running off the HDD

      • it improves it by 80% vs HDD … but if it had new sata it would improve it by 300%

        • +2

There was a feature that tested it and could not notice any significant improvement in load times. Though that was tested in the first batch of SSDs. Maybe they have improved since then.

I don't think it's worth doing in any case. A 512GB SSD easily exceeds the cost of the PS3 itself.

        • people in AusOCAU forums have put in SSD's and got back twice as fast loading times on games that are installed on the harddrive.

  • What would be the disadvantages (if any) of replacing the hard-drive in my Dell Vostro laptop with the 256GB SSD? I've had the laptop for about a year and it's starting to get slow and clunky.

Will the SSD's performance deteriorate quickly if I do a lot of torrenting?

    • +3

Enable trim support and forget about the ssd maintainance

    Any deals on 512gb SSDs?

Thanks OP. I've held off buying new computer equipment for too long … but your gravitational force was too strong. SSD ordered.

      • I have not received it either and raised a ticket about an hour ago.

    Hey Rep,
Any chance on deals for the Samsung 840's perhaps?

    • I need a sale on the 840 Pros! 512GB

    • The prices on these have gone up and are staying up from what we can see - will try to see able to conjure something over the next 2 weeks, keep your fingers crossed.

  • Could this go into an old school MacBook pro, 2006 Intel Model?

  • Naive question. Is it possible to put this in my late 2008 15" macbook pro ? Can I do it myself with some tools and simple instructions ?

    Thank you :)

EDIT - Apparently it can only handle SATA 2.0 (3 GBPS). This might be overkill and apparently there have been issues with SATA 3.0

    • Installing this is a breeze anyone can do it. Macbook pro pre 2011 i think can on connect at 3gbps but it is still worth replacing your standard drive with a SSD as boot and shutdown times are alittle over 12secs.

      • Yes you're right but I'm a bit worried about the SATA III drives performing only at 1.5GBPS rather than 3 GBPS. This is from the whirlpool thread. I'm trying to look for SATA II drives but the few that I can find are priced similarly to this SATA III SSD.

        2008 MacBook Pro 15" (Model ID MacBookPro5,1)
While a 6G SSD does function in a 2008 MacBook Pro15" , it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s) the machine is rated for. We have also experienced odd behavior such as system lock ups and random stalls in performance. As such, a 6G SSD is NOT recommended for this machine. Instead, the Mercury Extreme Pro 3.0Gb/s SSD does run at the full SATA Revision 2.0 (3Gb/s) specification and is highly recommended for use with this machine.

        • Get a Dell.

  • How does this compare with the SanDisk extreme ssd?

    Any mSATA SSD deals?

no - will explore this section and see if able to have deals on future

  • Looking for an N54L, even if the price has gone up, I would be willing to pay 250-260.

  • I paid $185 for this a week ago. Good price.

  • looking for a msata

  • Does the drive come with cable/software for transferring from old HD?

    • Hi ilostnemo,

you should consider something like this if you need something to house your SSD while you do the transfer. Free shipping on entire order when buy the SSD, so might want to have a look.

      Cheers
      SE

  • thanks, bought one for the laptop …

  • Just ordered, I hope I can transfer my old HD contents over, without too much of a headache

  • How long is this special on for?

    • It's in the deal details above

Until 14/07/2013 (Expires in 3 days)

  • +1

Was going to bundle this with Windows 8 OEM for a new build, but your Windows price is $126.50 - about $20-30 more than most other parts retailers.

Nevertheless, good price for the SSD alone.

  • Hi Guys,
Need an expert's advice on installing Win 8 on these ones.
I have win 7 on my existing laptop and if I buy a SSD and win 8 pro upgrade Cd, can I install a fresh copy?
    or
I need to have Win 7 installed first on the SSD and then upgrade? I just dont need anything from my old HDD as all of my data is in portable ones.

    • +1

You can fresh install a Win8 upgrade, here is one guide, just google for more.

  • I literally just decided that I wanted a SSD, and I came on OzBargain and here this deal was. Thanks!

  • Does this drive come with a 2.5 to 3.5 bracket and SATA cable? I just wanna know if I need to pick them up before the thing arrives, so I can play with it straight away :)

  • Can't wait for $50 voucher…really love 256 GB SSD

  • Seems like a good deal, might as well :)

  • Bought the Plextor 256GB for the same price the other day and been very happy with it, curious how this compares to it.

    • S or Pro?

  • any more SSD specials?
