  • I wouldn't put much stock in the value of the Smarthouse Awards, they look more like advertising than real comparisons of performance and quality.

They give best wireless headphone to the Philips and highly recommend Sennheiser RS220, best HDMI cable Crest ProHD2 $129.95, and the best ereader is a tablet Kindle HD Fire (over e-ink? really?).

edit: the only reviews I have found so far are for the previous model http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Headphone-Rechargeable-Techn…

  • Anything with a 1/2 price tag, don't expect high performance on sound!

    Only 3 reviews!!

    • Im looking for good wireless ones, any suggestions?

      • How much you want to pay up to?

      • don't get ones that are infra-red I did and they are a pain. you have to maintain line of sight.

I have decided to buy the Sennheiser RS 180 after reading all I can. My research tells me the extra $$ for the RS 220 isn't worth the money Now just trying to find best deal

        • I agree with you, while I would love to get the RS220 $600 just isn't feasible for me and I am looking for the RS180. Cheapest I have found at the moment is $229.00 with Free shipping to metropolitan areas from dwidigitalcameras. I am just googling at the moment to see what sort of reputation dwidigitalcameras have as I am not familiar with them.

        • We've got stuff from there for years.
Great prices, Good service. ( Fast reship of an item that was damaged in transit)

      • I don't have them (have cheap Sony ones), but if I was buying again for myself, I'd get sennheiser rs170 or rs180 (depending whether you want open or closed). Rs220 if you want to go all out.

  • Just want to share my experience on this purchases…

I got 9 of these from TGG last week (yup, it was me that cleared out most of the stock in TGG Perth shops)

we used it for a group gathering that needed to have translations to difference languages.

there were other people with Senn. RS170, & RS 180 and Phillips 5100. this model win out with most people prefer using this one.

The base for these model has got a simple 3 radio channels which you can use the scan button on the head set to tune to, works really well.

    problems:
    * if there are more than 2 bases with same signal, there is a humming noise on that channel, so best to just have one base for each channel. I tested on one base with 7 people tuned to the same channel, works fine.
    * if you're sitting next to another person with the RS180, there is also buzzing noise

    good points:
    * came with Rechargeable AAA bateries (2), managed to use 5+ hours without needing recharge.
    * came with jack adapter the Senn. doesn't
    * we piped some music during the break - nice sounds - equivalent to RS170.

for $75 there is nothing better - I searched. and there is also the support of local TGG shops to turn to if there are problems.

    • curious…

what is it exactly that people preferred over the RS170 and RS180? the transmission quality? the sound signature? the range/comfort/ease of use?

was it issues with the number of transmitters?

interesting, because those sennheisers are digital so, all things equal, transmission quality should be no match.

the fact there is scant information (reviews/comparisons) on these headphones or even the previous model, with no real comments on head fi/what hifi/etc…just makes me question these headphones.

i'm sure they're great for the price…whether they are superior/comparable to the more expensive sennheisers, i'm still skeptical…

      • We didn't test the sound/music quality as we're not an experts, we put the music through an 18 channels distributor, and the sound are very similar to most of the headsets, nothing that say wow… I talk to most people who switched between the RS170 and Phillips and the responses are positive for both… interestingly, the people that recognised the Senn, brand do prefer the Senn.

the thing that irritating the users most is the Sennheisers bases keep on switch off (maybe an automatic feature), the user must remember to switch on the base before going to they seat (we re-docked the headset during the breaks) the Philips bases switched on automatically.

with the number of transmitters issue, if we switched on all the bases with the same channels, there is a humming noise on the signal, so we just plug in on base per channel - don't think these were designed to be used for large group.

I am sure the Sennheisers are more superior in term of sound quality (I own 2 of their wired headset), there is also a Base and Treble button for extra boost, but in term of comfort and sound quality for our usage, they're similar.

foot note, we managed to get 10 RS170 at around $200 each, so the though of spending another $2000+ was too painful, so I am very happy to find these Phillips at this price.

        • Ah cheers for your detailed feedback. It sounds like sennheisers might still be the best choice for sound quality (for individual home use), but these Philips are great for the price (and may be comparable and/or better value for your usage).

If I was buying for a (ex)gf who is more concerned with convenience than sound quality (as I was when I purchased the Sony wireless headphones), I would probably buy these. For myself (or if I knew it would turn out to be an ex, and I would get custody of the headphones!) I would go the sennheisers.
