Cheap Electricity from Dodo: 10% off for QLD, 15% off for NSW and 20% off for VIC

60

Discounts are off electricity usage ONLY (the price per kWh). There is no discount on the fixed usage charge (the price per day your electricity is connected, regardless of usage).

QLD residents residing in the Energex service area (other Queenslanders don’t get to choose their electricity retailer for the time being unfortunately) get 10% off their usage, NSW residents get 15% off and VIC residents get a whopping 20% off with an option to increase it even further to 30% if they also bundle their gas service with Dodo.

If you sign-up with Dodo before 06/08/2013, there will be no fixed contract term so you can switch to another provider at any time at no cost at all.

After August 6, you will still be able to get those discounts but will need to sign-up for a 12 month contract in order to secure the maximum discount available (alternatively, you can opt for no fixed contract term and get half the discount). If you then want to leave Dodo before your 12 months are up, you will need to pay them an exit fee of $3.30 per each month left on your contract.

Dodo does not charge you any credit card surcharge but, surprisingly enough, charges you a $1.10 fee per each payment made via Bpay or by direct debit from your bank account. Therefore, I suggest that if you sign-up with them and don't have a credit card (or don't want to use one), you use the debit card that comes with your transaction account to make the payments to Dodo.

Finally, keep in mind that Dodo will send you your bill via email. If you want a paper bill posted to you, they will charge you a $1.10 fee per each posted bill.

For the Queenslanders amongst you, here is a blog post that compares this deal against what is currently being offered through One Big Switch.

I would really appreciate that if you do decide to sign-up, you choose to go through my link

  • I just sign up last month. Please note that they require the payment be made in advance each month using instalment. I argue my case and request to have the monthly payment as low as possible (around 55 dollar per month) and the rest pay when the bill come. Standard Activation and De activation service fee of around 55 dollar apply to provide initial and final meter check

    • Which state are you in?

Based on my knowledge, there are no activation or final meter read fees if you are in Queensland.

OP, you might want to rewrite that first paragraph, it contradicts itself

If you are in Victoria, I'd suggest using the comparison website here: http://yourchoice.vic.gov.au/
Even with the 20% discount (which ONLY applies when you pay on time, which I don't always) Dodo was not the cheapest option for me (plus the other restrictions and terms of the deal).

    • Can you please post a link to a plan that beats this offer for customers in VIC?

That would be really appreciated by everyone I'm sure. Thanks

      • +2

As requested, cheaper plan(s) than Dodo's for Vic customers (obviously specific to one set of post codes):

        Residential Electricity, Post code 3170
Single flat price at all times
Typical Customer, Low Energy Usage (up to 2 people)

Momentum Smile Power $272 (no conditions)
Red Energy, Living Energy Saver $279 (with pay on time discount)
Click Honeymoon $287 (with pay on time discount)
EnergyAustralia Everyday Saver Residential $291 (with pay on time discount)
People Energy On Time Saver $296 (with pay on time discount)
Dodo Power & Gas $296 (with pay on time discount)

        5 offers cheaper than Dodo.
In addition, Momentum do not charge 15-20% extra if you pay a day or two after the bill is due and are not restricted to specific bill, payment type or other conditions.

          Thanks Wolfy. Much appreciated.

          1. I don't think the Click Honeymoon plan exist anymore.

          2. Both plans from Momentum and Red require signing up for a contract. It's 2 years with Red and either 1,2, or 3 years with momentum (I assume you will need to sign up for 3 years if you want the maximum discount). Break fee for Red is $40 regardless of how much time left on your contract. Could not find the break fee for Momentum.

The plan from Red looks very good on the face of it. Even if you do have to pay a $40 break fee at some point. Seems like their 10% off is on both usage and fixed charges

          Shame they don't service QLD.

          Thanks for sharing

Don't forget Red Energy has a $50 sign-up bonus if referred see http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87387

    • There is also a comparison website from the federal government which covers ALL states.

      http://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/compare-offers/details/1373…

      • That site does not appear to cover Victoria. Putting in my postcode redirects me to
        http://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/VIC-not-NEM

        "Message for Victorian customers

Sorry, but you are not able to compare energy offers on Energy Made Easy at this time.

To find energy offers that may be available to you in Victoria, visit the Essential Services Commission."

A hyperlink for 'Essential Services Commission' points to http://yourchoice.vic.gov.au/.

    • If you paid by credit card or eftpos, how could you not pay on time?
      (Cash….does that still exist?)

Unless dodo transact after your due date?

      • Correct.

If you have direct debit than the likelihood of you not paying on time is extremely low.

Just one thing with direct debit:
Make sure it is coming from a credit or debit card and not directly from your bank account.

For some bizarre reason, Dodo charges a $1.10 fee for each payment made from a bank account or by Bpay. Go figure…

    • in qld, you can use the http://www.qca.org.au/electricity-retail/comparator/ to compare plans

  • I was only looking at this the other day.
Not feeling the love from origin after i was shafted when contract expired and was not reminded.
i got a 20% increase in my bill as i went onto "standard" rates.

Dodo would save me another 10% on electricity (about $350 pa) so its worth considering BUT what grief may come with their billing system?

    • I was the same, but it seems I still get the 14% discount I had on the contract?

  • +1

payment in advance each month really sucks

    • And this is how they can give you a discount, by limiting their exposure and making money from your monthly payments.

  • I just switch over from dodo to power direct, got called by one of those switch webstie.
After comparision it's a better offer if you can get it in VIC.

They offer 28% guaranteed discount with quartely bills, so no prepayment, still get the discount if you pay late.

  • +1

origin beats dodo for me (with same 12 month contract). so do a whole heap of other companies (with longer contracts. but some contracts are surprisingly cheap to get out of..so it's not necessarily a big deal..eg. i would save $4 per month on momentum compared to dodo, and the momentum exit fee for leaving the contract early is only $20).

searched using http://yourchoice.vic.gov.au/ with my details and got per month after discounts:

    Dodo - $93 (12 month contract)
    Origin - $92 (12 month contract)
    Momentum - $89 (but 36 month contract)
    People - $90 (but 24 month contract)
    Lumo - $91 (but 24 month contract)
    Red - $91 (but 24 month contract)

    Dodo exit fee for leaving 12 month contract = $3.30 * 12 = $39.60
Momentum exit fee for leaving 36 month contact = $20

Dodo is prepaid monthly in advance (yuk!)
    Momentum is postpaid quarterly

    • Great analysis!

I do agree with you that paying in advance sucks.

However, on the other hand this could be a lifesaver for many people and especially for those who use a lot. This is due to the fact that their electricity expenses are 'smoothed out' across the year instead of getting a huge bill that needs to be paid upfront every 3 months.

If your monthly electricity usage is lower than the minimum prepayment amount required by the retailer than yes, you are much better served putting that money in a savings account and earning interest on it instead of 'gifting' it to your electricity company.

Electricity is a VERY complex area for consumers to get their heads around (with Health Insurance probably being the only one to match it as far as the level of complexity).

Each one of us needs to assess their options very carefully when it comes to electricity as, unfortunately, there is mostly no 'one size fit all' solution in this area.

      • i think that most of the "postpay" retailers have an optional feature that allows you to pay monthly to smooth out your bills.

i wouldn't describe Dodo's "non optional monthly prepaid" as a feature

  • Click energy do 9% off the full bill (QLD) - also pay in advance and no contract … also 10C above govt rates for feed in tarrif

  • Ok guys do not forget that this discount has nothing to do with price per kWh.
I just went online and got a quote for NSW 2035.
    https://connectto.dodo.com/electricity/QuoteSummary.aspx?quo…
It is through Ausgrid $0,67 daily charge, $0.2684 first 10.95 kWh(per day), next $0.2805.

    Which is not the cheapest.

For example momentum(although 12 month contract but fixed rates)
    http://www.momentumenergy.com.au/system/files/documents/PPIS…
    first 1000kWh(3 month) $0.2523, next 1000kWh(3 month) $0.2636 with $0.69 daily charge.

So lets assume I use 1500kWh over 3 month

    1. with DODO 90x10.95= 985.5kWh x 0.2684 = $264.5, 1500-985.5= 514.5kWh x 0.2805 = $144
      total $409 + $60(0.67x90) = $469
    2. with momentum 1000x0.2523= $252.3, 500x0.2636= $131.8
      total $384 + $62(0.69x90) = $446

And then with DODO we get a tempting discount if you pay on time and do not forget that you will have to pay monthly instalment($100-$150) and then remaining of the bill.
I guess if DODO does not increase rates over say 12 month then they are very cheap indeed
$469-$70(15% off) = $399 so we can save about $50 per 3 month and $200 over 12 month IF no rates increase.

  • I just signed up
    10% discount with no contract

  • OMG! rely on Dodo for Electricity =D

    • They are the middle men, not the supplier!

      • but they are the ones that give the go ahead to turn you off .. eg.

        1) dodo overcharge me, i dispute it, but they cut me off anyway
        2) i pay my bill, dodo stuffs up and says i didn't .. they cut me off

so you still need to rely on them .. and dodo doesn't have the best reputation

        • They can't just cut you off, there are formal procedures they need to take first.

        • dodo - voted australia's "most likely company to stuff up when there are formal procedures to take first*"

I signed up for click energy gold pack for vic and get 22% total bill.no exit fee. I thinks dodo do electric for 30% usage and gas 20% if you do both in vic.

    • " I thinks dodo do electric for 30% usage and gas 20% if you do both in vic"
      Correct!

Been with Dodo for over a year with electricity and signed up to gas as soon as it became available; am in VIC as they are the only state currently offering gas. All bills are paid via DD to my CC but I certainly make sure I scrutinise each bill as it comes in via email. Have a smart meter so it's pretty straight forward usage wise. Was with Origin for both previously and have done the calculations on numerous occasions and am saving several hundred dollars a year with Dodo. Will continue to do six monthly comparisons to ensure I'm getting the best deal but I'm very happy with what they are offering.

    • I did the same, happy so far, but maybe time for review.

    • "Will continue to do six monthly comparisons to ensure I'm getting the best deal but I'm very happy with what they are offering"

Good on you! I do the same.

This is how everyone should behave instead of complaining about rising prices. Much better use of your time and energy IMHO.

  • Dodo increases the rates every now and then. In the last one year, they have increased the electricity rates thrice for me.

    • and if you are in Vic and take up the gas offer it should be cheaper than momentum.

  • I thinking to switch from Origin(flexichoice) to Click, do I need to inform Origin and give them 28 days notice? What could happen if I do not inform them?

  • What if I have solar installed and get credit every month. Does it still worth switching?

    • It's not for me, Origin give me a 14% discount on my usage before the solar credit is applied.

These guys will only give you a discount on after your solar credit is applied. You need to work it out yourself using the above discount rates for your state and see if it is worth it. Also you need to pay $50 per month regardless.

  • Dodo couldn't beat my offer from Red Ebergy and at least red doesn't charge my credit card or bank each month an estimated usage plus a $1 fee for it.

    No thanks.

  • I managed to get $35 credit which reduced the $55 connection fee to just $20

    Good luck
