  • I am not above enjoying the occasional rummage through BSL's bins.

However, I think people would agree that sites like OzBargain are designed specifically for free, or unique & genuine bargains and very similar offers.

If everyman and his dog started using OzBargain simply as free advertising, and for spamming their online sites, op shops or $2 stores there would be dozens of extra daily postings and genuine stuff would disappear amidst the irrelevant noise.

    'BOOK BURNING'

A point of contention I have with religious charity shops is their apparent practice of 'Book Burning'.

I learned, after speaking to a retiree volunteer who had worked in a number of 'religious' charity shops, that it is common practice for all 'non-approved' books to be destroyed rather than sold.

These included books from 'rival religious franchises', or of certain philosophical or scientific (evolution for example) viewpoints, or on 'moral' grounds, or that they were…'too modern'.

Even when daily volunteer staff put books on display with a price, they would be censored daily, weekly or so, on the whims of various overseers or area managers and destroyed. Often just based on the title without any knowledge of the contents of the book.

And while it may be considered reasonable not to display or sell the 'Karma Sutra' in many op shops, sometimes half the books given to some stores on any particular day were gratuitously destroyed.

The lesson here may be, to only give books to 'secular' charity shops like WIRES, MS, RSPCA, Cancer Council etc, etc, etc.

    This is now my practice.

  • Stop spamming. I know that you guys are not for profit organisations, but that does not exempt you from obeying the rules here. Trying to pretend that you are a customer when you are in fact representing BSL is against our ToS.
