  • From memory, if you pay for 2yrs upfront, you receive a 'bonus' computer tablet (which could be used for a chrissie present).

  • Really is it worth it?

I'm in Victoria, so we're under RACV. We have top cover, as it technically covers one person AND one listed vehicle. Which means the other half is the listed driver and he is covered regardless of what car he drives and my car is the listed vehicle (so we're both covered on one policy).

We're in a country / rural area, so we find it handy.

If you can rely on a large network of friends, you probably don't need it, lol…

I guess you are more of looking at the "members benefit" side of the membership, rather than the roadside assistance. For me I don't think I'll pay for just the benefits. You'll find discount elsewhere — on OzBargain or through cashback programs.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the benefits side of things; usually looking around you will find some better deals. I have been with the RACV, or similar in other states, since I started driving and simply wouldn't be without the roadside assistance. One simple tow covers your membership fees for the year. You know at least one person out there is on their way to assist, no matter where your wheels has decided to stop. Who else is going to deliver that "difficult to locate" battery on Boxing Day?! I am quite certain that the later model the vehicle, the more likely these days the vehicle problem cannot be fixed immediately, due to those little annoying computer gremlins, necessitating yet another tow. Lost count!

I have used my NRMA free2go service 6 times (Registered twice, 2 cars) and used a tow truck twice, the rest were just battery / locked car doors with keys inside.

In saying that, those 2 two tow trucks would have cost me about $350.00 easily; but were free. NRMA I think is well worth the dollar; especially if you are younger with the usual car under $2,000. The usual items to go are battery, starter motor and alternators which isn't really a fix on the spot job requiring a tow truck.

It's all about personal preference. I'll definitely be using roadside services for many years. I am no mechanic; and they've saved my arse many times already.

  • I am only asking as my mum has had NRMA membership for more than 25 years, and I have never looked at the membership benefits before, but might be able to save something if she buys / books if for me. thanks

    • I had the same idea, didn't get anywhere with it sadly….

  • does NRMA do hotys movie tickets deals?

  • We've used the Advantage Shopper service a couple of times for getting the best price on dishwashers. It works well.

  • We've recently used the NRMA discount at Freedom furniture a few times (additional 5% off sale price…every little bit helps). Better value for us than Freedom's own paid membership loyalty program.
