Free School Readiness Trial Class for 4-6 Yr Olds (Melbourne)

60

Found this offer for a free reading class in Melbourne for kids starting school next year:

"The Reading Bees Early Literacy Program is for all children starting primary school (prep) next year.

The Reading Bees Early Literacy Program uses music, craft, drama and games to teach the alphabet sounds, blending these sounds together to make words, handwriting and much more.

Please mention the trial class when you contact us to receive a free class. There is no cost and no obligation."

I spoke to the lady that runs it (Amber) and booked my 5 year old son into a class this Thursday. Will keep you posted how it goes. Seems to be getting good feedback on their facebook page facebook.com/readingbees

I think that commercial for-profit exploitation of parental anxiety is deeply unethical. Call it "after school care" for a fee, that's fine, but interrupt childhood for learning that isn't due or necessary, wrong.

Sorry, OP, I know you mean well, but the only people benefitting from these things is the person who collects your payment.

Isn't 4 year old kinder enough?

    • and any 4yo kinder teacher will tell you that reading is probably the last thing to worry about for school readiness…

just goes to show you how little the people that run these scams know…

    What a waste of money…

Both my kids learned to read while still at Kinder.
Just read to your kids each night, and when they are ready, they'll start to read…

All these companies are starting up to exploit parents into feeling guilty that they aren't doing their best for their kids… Just spend time with your kids, learning comes naturally…

Giving your kids a love of books is one of the best gifts a parent can give. I suggest reading Mem Fox's Read-aloud Commandments for some ideas.

    • How about making words bold? Did that help your kids?

      • How about making words bold? Did that help your kids?

Yes, they enjoy putting emphasis in their reading…

        (Read Mem Fox's commandment # 3)

    • Spot on jv, and start em YOUNG!

All these programs offer first lesson free…

At the end of the lesson, they try to con you into feeling guilty if you don't sign up your kid…

Save your money and go to your local library each week. Get some free books and read to them every night… That's all they need.

As a 26 year old guy with no children, i absolutely agree. No early learning program is going to substitute for quality, one-on-one parenting, with an emphasis on education.

      The more you know.

I thought ABC's Reading Eggs was the way to go. Seems to be used by a lot of prep classes too.

I read this as "Free Schoolies Readiness Trial Class for 4-6 Yr Olds (Melbourne)"

4-6 year olds practise going to the Gold Coast and getting smashed?!?!?

  • Send those 4yos off to cram school, the lazy fockers.

  • Some of the previous comments are inappropriate and inaccurate .
Prekindergarten reading skills are essential for school readiness and long term outcome in literacy
problems in literacy impact on over 10-15% of kids - early intervention give best results (ref to evidence based research )
Unfortunately not many kids are read to ! with some families have a tv in each bedroom with no books around the house .
