Why Kogan has given only 2 days to announce a new pricing structure; who knows.

    • +6

Great news for Aldi Mobile and Boost.

  • +8

So their court case win has cost them more from their Network provider?
    They're rather substantial increases!
Unless you actually use 6Gb, I'd be looking to switching to Boost at $40/month unlimited (3Gb data) and with a bigger/faster network and no stupid 400mb/day restriction..

    • +2

      agree!
I'll definitely be moving over to boost

    • Yep, they won the case, but have been forced to implement all the 'transgression criteria' that the Telstra wholesaler was using to turf people off - and then some. There is now a 12 hour continuous packet data session sin to potentially fall foul of.

Whirlpool thread - starts about here - has been speculating on the ins-and-outs, price-wise and otherwise, for a fortnight or so. Kogan have been emphasising for a while that the current price structure was only ever 'introductory'.
They needed to create a bigger price differential between the 365 offer and the shorter access plans to increase the incentive. There certainly is a greater one now…

People paying month-to-month now have an even bigger incentive to look elsewhere altogether. Depending on your network access, data usage - and level of aversion to nasty T's&C's - there are lots of other options.

    • +2

Hang on- isn't $40 times 12 $480. How is that value?

  • +3

Surely ALDI Mobile looks better now than Boost? At $35/mo you also get $10 worth of International Credit, which is it worth it for me as I like to send the occasional international SMS…

Even if you don't use it for International, $35/mo < $40/mo, unless I'm missing something here?

    • -1

      3G vs. 4G networks

      • Boost only supports 4G. Also worth noting about Boost:

Q: Do you have Nano SIMS for the iPhone 5?
A: No, we do not yet have Nano SIMS for the iPhone yet. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on arrival

For ALDI Mobile, if you have an iPhone 5, you'll need to order the SIM online: https://www.aldimobile.com.au/help/?s=nano#support-509

        • +3

I thought Boost has Telstra's NextG but not 4G/LTE?

        • +3

          Confirmed scotty- only nextG 3g

        • +1

Yes, sorry - typo, only supports 3G.

    • +1

I understood that if you don't use any of the $10 Int'l credit, it gets credited back to your a/c next month, so it only costs you an additional $25 for the next month's unlimited?

      • +2

Would like this confirmed if true.

        • +1

It's true. I did this during my last cycle and you have to manually do it as you recharge otherwise it's an easy process.

        • +2

How on earth does this work? Are you really saying that if you are on an Aldi $35 plan then you don't use your $10 international credit the next month you are paying only $25 for the month? This would mean that Aldi is way better than even Kogan's current pricing?

How do you specify this on the website? Surely they don't equate 'virtual' dollars as real dollars, or has the mobile phone world been turned upside down?

        • What are the steps?

    • +2

ALDI Mobile uses Telstra Wholesale whereas Boost Mobile has unrestricted access to the Telstra Next G network, including DC-HSPA+. Boost Mobile offers a far superior service in terms of coverage and download speeds, in my opinion.

      • Any hard data on the averages out there? I understand that according to kogan the averages are much closer together than the maximum speeds across the different technologies

      • Just based on my network use during mycommute (admittedly a very bad way to judge a whole network) Boost seems to be far inferior to Kogan as far as speed goes to the point of having network dropouts ie. no service in certain areas where Kogan did not.

  • +1

i read kogan was jacking up the prices in the news ages ago. seems to be very short notice.

    • I wasn't expecting them to announce the detail at all until the first of August. At least this gives some people a bit of leeway.

  • "Please be aware that if you extend your Access Period before your current Access Period has expired, you will forfeit the un-used portion of you current Access Period"

I've got 28 days left, so if I extend today I lose those 28 days?

    • That's the way I read it. It's even worse for me, I have 79 days left of my 90 day access. So it actually works out more expensive for me to move to the 365 day deal now than it is to use up my remaining 79 days and then move to the 1 year deal ><

    • +6

      Exactly.

This move is very very sleigh on Kogans end.

    • +5

Aw shit. I was starting to like Kogan too. I also have more than half of my 90 days left.

  • +11

    Good bye Kogan. Hello Aldi.

  • +9

Please for the love of Christ switch to Aldi people. This is just typical Kogan style bait-and-switch that I knew was coming from the start. Stop supporting this douche.

    • +4

      lol 2 comments? sus much?

    • +7

      Hey Mr Kogan.

    • If those were long calls, every unlimited plan has "fair use" policies which I wouldn' be surprised if you fell foul of. Most people aren't making 28 calls everyday on a personal service (this plan is not for business use)

  • +4

Vaya unlimited is not too bad of an option too, its $36 and its uses optus 4g. Well its not telstra but if you live in cbd, not a problem

  • Vaya has got a sim card starter pack for $20 bucks. Thats a rip off. And $36 is their special price. Original is $45. You never know after 1 month when people join them will come back to their original $45 bucks

    • +1

Vaya guarantees prices for 24mths. Besides, this 20% off thing is just a bit of marketing, looks like those prices are here to stay

  • +1

So the data only plan will be $15 for 2gb (same as Aldi). Anyone know of any better deals for data only plans?

    • +2

Using woollies mobile, I get 5gb for $26.

      • Is this after a discount?

        • Yeah everyday card gives you 10% at woolies when you buy a top up. But keep in mind it lasts 45 days. So $18 a month for 5GB(thru optus) $250 for optus to optus + $250 for rest
          http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/

    • +2

      Pennytel = $25/m for 14Gb

On Vodafone though.. works really well ONLY IF you're in Vodafones new 850 band coverage, otherwise you'll get like ~150Kb/s

  • +1

This makes me a sad panda :(

Seriously though I now have these options-

    Boost - Next G Network, Less Data (3GB) & $39

    Aldi Mobile - Standard Telstra 3G, 5GB & $35

Is Next G and better service worth $4?

    • +1

Go with Boost Mobile if your mobile supports DC-HSPA+ and you visit regional areas every now and again.

  • Three, Vodafone, Optus, Vaya and now Kogan. This has been the best network of all and ticks all the boxes. Don't have a 4g phone and wouldn't be upgrading in the near future so I'm happy with 3g.
Been on a month to month and rather than moving to another company within the Telstra network, I think its wise to sign up to a one year access making it $25 a month. Couldn't get a cheaper service on the Telstra network.

  • +2

still got 55 days on kogan.

Won't continue with kogan as the monthly plans are not worth it and after dealing with shitty vodafone network some time back , i pledged not to get into yearly commitment with any mobile company.

I will need a plan thats unlimited and works out cheapest for international calls. Any suggestions ?

also does international calling card numbers work with other providers like boost, aldi , vaya. They work fine on amaysim and kogan but i know vodafone had some of them blocked or were being charged at much higher rate.

  • I don't need anywhere near unlimited everything or 6gb of data per month, but when use a price engine the plans that accommodate my limited needs are so close in cost to Kogan it's not worth considering them.

    • +2

      Try TPG

  • +9

You have to wonder whether this was Kogan's plan all along - lure people in with low prices and then put them up similar to everyone else's after a few months - people wont bother to port out because the deal is similar to elsewhere but by the same token they would've have ported in in the first place with the not so great prices.

I consider this a total bait and switch.

  • +2

    Corresponding % increases are: 34.5%, 25.3%, 10.0%, 50.1%.

    That's massive, even in Swahili.

Glad i didn't bother - i use Woolies $29 5G 45days with bunch of calls, but mainly use it for the 5G & SMS & odd call.

They've had the same pricing since at least Aug 2011 when i started and it's still a good deal IMO - unless you're making a lot of calls in which case you will probably run out fairly quickly - it amounts to something like a little over 4 hours of calls to non-optus…

    • yeah same
best deal for me, my wife and my parents hehehe

  • Also Aldi Mobile does not have international roaming, if its important to you(don't seem to discuss very often here) but boost does!

  • +3

They're no longer competitive. With such high prices, they still want to police your data.

    • Agree!!

  • I bit the bullet and extended for a year. I can't see cheap offerings like this continuing with any of the carriers/mvno's in the next 12mths and I will not use Optus.

Given I don't go near the 400Mb/day, my only risk I see is that ISPone doesn't go belly up. Fingers crossed.

    • That would be the simple thing to do and is what they want. But when the new 12 month price is only $30 PER YEAR more (just $2.50 a month!) why wouldn't you just renew for the 90 days at reduced rate (saving $20 off new pricing) and see what they do next…in case you decide you aren't happy months down the track into a 12 month commitment?
There are always other providers around using the Telstra network at similar price (but with alternate conditions and billing method)… eg. Aldi Mobile, Boost, MySaver, Think Mobile etc..

      • True, and if I decide in 4 months time that I'm not happy, I'll be grateful I don't have 11 months remaining and am $30 less worse off.

I figured if the provider goes down it may end Aldi as well, the only comparable option to avert the risk is to switch to Boost.

8 months of Boost including a $20 starter sim is $300, my gamble is making it that far and breaking even.

  • Can anyone on Vaya please confirm if they still sell handets at a discounted price.
Might be an incentive to go back to Vaya.
Could you please post a screenshot of all handsets available.
    Many Thanks

  • +1

I just bought 6 sims for family members and didn't have the time to activate them before the price rise, and out of principal probably won't. I choose android as I don't like being straight-jacketed by Apple, and I don't like being made a fool of either by Kogan. There are many other alternatives for the same price such as TPG, amaysim, Woolworths, Dodo, etc etc and I would rather lose the price of the sim and go elsewhere out of principal. Kogan, please show me the 'warnings' where it said that prices would go up from $29 to $39 = 33% increase. Outrageous.

    • They aren't the same price.

They've been giving warnings since the service started using the terms "introductory price".

Did you have to slip a stupid fanboy line in there for this really?

It seems foolish to pay for something and then not use it. Why didn't you just throw the money in the bin and save yourself some work?

  • +2

I switched from Kogan 3 weeks ago. This is the company that disconnected my phone for a few days because I used 1GB during the Brisbane floods early this year, and I only got my service back in that time rather then a week because the TIO were nice enough to give me a direct line to a senior staff member who I harassed every hour asking for updates on my lack of service.

Before I ported away to Boost I gave them a nice present, 4GB usage in a few hours ;)

Boost is the way to go, its owned by Telstra and you get the full 3G network instead of just part of it.

Although Aldi etc seems fine as well… anything but kogan honestly, their brand of TV's suck, and their mobile service is the worst in Australia.

  • Kogan made it in the news, hopefully some action will be taken

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/kogan-mobile-accused-of-du…

    • i hope the acma will also clamp down on aldi mobile as well. they are advertising "unlimited" calls but at the same time limiting calls in their fair use policy. i thought the use of "unlimited" died out years ago

      quoting from the article:

"Under the Telecommunications Protection Code the word "unlimited" may not be used unless the offerings are in fact unlimited."

      • The thing is, it is unlimited. You can use as much as you want while you are a paying customer. The loop whole is every company has the right to refuse business to any customer not under contract (ie. prepaid in this case).
