  • I plant to buy the 256gb 840 PRO. However, base on the specs, look like this new SSD drive is pretty much as same speed as the 840pro and 50$ cheaper. Anyway advice?

    • The pros are still the best performance wise, but based on price/ performance the evos are excellent.

Also the pros have 5 year warranty, these have 3

I'm personally getting these, you won't see the performance gap between the two in real life. Only in benchmarks.

      • 1TB is most popular so far.

      • +3

First, make sure the 840 Pro is 256 GB not 250 GB. The pro uses a different type of NAND. The Pro uses MLC which is older but faster. The regular 840 and the Evo use TLC which is newer and cheaper to produce. Also, the Pro's MLC NAND is supposed to last much longer. The 2nd article estimates that MLC's expected lifespan is 60 years vs 19 years for TLC. If you do not plan on using the SSD for more than a decade, this is trivial. Depending on how close the prices are, the Pro is the way to go. If the Evo 840 is significantly cheaper, it is not bad at all, I own a regular 250 GB 840 and it is very fast. If you can find a regular 830 get that, it also uses MLC. The difference between the Evo and regular is that the Evo only uses 2 "bits per cell" while the regular uses 3 bpc. This makes the Evo faster.

<<< This is the best answer I found on the internet, will invest in the EVO

        • Also worth noting that the EVO achieves its speed by way of a Turbo Write cache of emulated SLC NAND. This cache varies in size depending on the size of the drive:

          120 GB - 3 GB
          250 GB - 3 GB
          500 GB - 6 GB
          750 GB - 9 GB
          1 TB - 12 GB

If whatever you're doing manages to fill/exceed this cache, then the write performance will drop back to that of the regular 840.

        • True, but not completely.

EVO uses TLC but it has a SLC (simulated, not real SLC) cache (SLC > MLC > TLC in speed). And automatically moves data to TLC when idle.

I would go with the one with cheaper price between evo and pro.

I wish they'd hurry up and release details on the new Macbooks.

    • This is still a great price for the Macbook pro brand new..
I am very tempted to buy now @.@

Edit: Didn't see the previous deal by these guys… I no longer want this one after seeing that awesome offer they had up last time :(
Sad too since I was going to buy it now :S

      • we will sell any left of these at 1400+ no sweat.. just giving OZBers a chance who missed out on the last one, which is EOL… a lot of people have been emailing asking for more of the other model.. but we cant get.

  • Hi Hijack, i've been told the Pros are staying current for now, probably for the rest of the year. but with IT, you never know!

  • So tempted to buy the 1TB for my games but just bought a Dyson can't afford it anymore

    • Does the Dyson have a good return policy :P

  • B&H Photo are also selling these Samsung EVO's.

Their prices are more expensive than what Megabuy is quoting, even before you consider some very hefty shipping charges to be added by B&H. We can thank the weak AUD for that…

Megabuy's prices also seem to be the cheapest on staticice right now by a fair margin….

So have to positive this post…

I would buy now, but I have a feeling they may get even cheaper a month or two after release…

  • Rep are you expecting this as the standard price post release?

  • These are on severe shortage.. and the AUD continues to drop, we gave a good price up front to OZB and to our EDM subscribers, but if you check, our normal online price is higher. by a fair bit i.e. 1TB is 799.

  • When can the 120gb be sent out? I was literally on my way to msy for the normal 840 and WHOALA

  • All indications to me are we can ship them on friday, but they are a brand new product and NO-ONE will have stock til friday except distributors, who get them on Thursday.

  • Hi Rep,

If I place an order of Macbook pro now, when will it get delivered to Sydney?

Also can I claim GST while leaving Australia as per TRS norms?

    • You can definitely claim TRS as per norms, we can ship the macbooks out tomorrow (couriers have been for the day)

Just a note, JB Hifi are selling this model for 1644.

        Ordered Rep. Thanks.

  • Perfect! I was waiting for a decent price on the 500gb. Roughly $40 cheaper than most other stores currently

  • If only it could be the 256 gB MBP! I had it in my cart last time but my order was cancelled before I could pay! Guess I will just have to keep waiting for the Haswells

  • rep, can you do free shipping on the ssd's :)?

  • Bought a 500gb for my discounted steam games. Good price.

  • Added a 250GB to cart and delivery to Melbourne is $15.95, not $7.95. Am I missing something?

  • I refresh the Macbook page and it goes from free shipping to $21.95

    • Will fix that for you

  • done

    • Hi,

How about the delivery cost for SSD?

      Thanks

    • The ssd delivery cost is still $15

  • Hi Rep,

Any idea why the shipping cost for ssd is $15.95 rather than $7.95?

  • The shipping cost on the SSD jumped from 7.95 in the morning to 15.95 now.

    • It's back to 7.95 but it's the shipping cost PER SSD. Can Rep confirm this?

  • called but seems not getting stock

  • Hi Guys,

Apologies, the website reverted freight - but it has been restored to 7.95

We are tentatively receiving stock Friday as stated above - if you call our customer service team they wont be across it because its so new it isnt in the system. (left hand not talking to the right :) )

    • I have a US order for the Samsung Evo 1TB for $715.70 AUD (based on current exchange rate, they haven't debited my card yet).

If you're able to beat / meet that cost I'll order from you in the interest of warranty / supporting local business / insert happy fuzzy feeling reason here! :)

  • Hello rep.
Can you please explain why the item still has not shipped? I purchased the 120gb. Has the item details just not been updated on my account?
Pretty annoyed I paid more than what shopping express offers it for, and they had stock when they offered it.

  • Hi Rep, any word on if stock is in yet? In particular the 500gb model. I'm hoping to receive mine this week

  • +1

I am thinking of cancelling the order tomorrow, if it is not shipped by tomorrow. Then order from shopping express.

    • Can we do that? Will they refund us hassle free? Past experiences with shopping express were awesome, I'm pretty confident they will have it delivered to us before these guys even if we order now..

      • Shopping Express really is much better. Got a delivery this Saturday (Yes, weekend) on something i ordered last Thursday.

        • sent rep a message, so if they have yet to see these posts they should soon.

        • Sent a message directly through their website. Hopefully mentioning 'ozbargain' will speed things up.

  • I cancelled my order today. They still don't have any of the 840 evo SSD's.
