what is the audio quality like ?

  • If i buy this to listen to Grand Final over the radio while watching the live TV broadcast, will the radio have the same 1-2 second delay as the digital TV, and be in sync?

    • I've heard my friend report a delay between ATV and DTV. Maybe it'll be between DAB+ and DTV too. If there is a delay, it's in the broadcasting system and buying a different DAB+ radio won't help.

I don't think you are going to be able achieve what you want without a DAB+ card in your computer and manually adjusting it to sync.

    • digital radio has about 10 sec more delay than analogue…

ABC Radio's technical director gave an explanation on Sydney 702 in response to a question of why there is no timing beep on DAB+ as you do on AM. He said DAB+ audio streams will always suffer variable delays due to signal processing issues. He quoted audio encoding at the source, transfer of data to the broadcasting towers, and error correction through the processing path (including inside your radio). The amount of delay cannot be predicted and so it is pointless to insert timing beeps.

      • Oh wow THAT's what those beeps are for! I had no idea it was a thing, just thought it was part of the ABC transmission for some reason. One life mystery solved.

The timing beeps on AM radio act as an hourly chime. The beginning of the last beep of the series of six is the start of the hour. The beeps are synced to ABC's atomic clock, which lives in ABC's HQ in Ultimo NSW last time I saw it. Why does ABC need an atomic clock? The clock is used primarily to maintain stable and accurate broadcast frequencies, and secondarily as a good time keeper.

The beeps are not corrected for delays in radio wave propagation, but they are good enough for setting our watches and clocks. Here is an interesting 1997 paper from CSIRO National Measurement Laboratory that discussed time and frequency standards in Australia, and here is a Powerpoint slide show packed as a PDF with more recent info.

        • synced to ABC's atomic clock

It's not actually atomic, I've seen it, it's really much bigger…

        • Actually it is atomic… the clock part. The rest of the machinery is there to keep the atoms excited and happy, to count the clock ticks and to show you the frequencies and time.

  • I quite like the look of their retro style radios, saw a few at JB the other day. Any idea on quality/where to get one at a reasonable price?

  • First time I've ever heard Bush described as a 'major' brand. Now there's milk all down my shirt.

  • Needs internet radio.
