      Hmm Yes..
      may be a disadvantage..
However, I have been using windows 8 without touch screen for more than 6 months now..

i have win8 installed on my crap desktop. it works absolutely fine.
for the price, this laptop seems good.

    • touch…. screen…. both so 2000's.
Give me my Minority Report era touchless/screenless computing now!
Hoverboard and hover conversions soon too please. Thank you.

  • I've been told to stay away from Acer computers because they are unreliable, is such a comment justified?

my friend has one at it works fine

    • I have worked as technician for them in Europe and could confirm that. Especially new releases have a high return rate. This one seems to be already a bit in the days so it might be just fine

Why has he been negged? Acer computers are at the low end in terms of reliability, especially their budget lines. I thought this was a known fact?

      • not all of them, as i mentioned above a friend of mine has one and it works perfectly, nothing wrong with it. My grandparents have a small acer aspire one and it's fine for their needs

    • In the past, yes, Acers have been cheap crap and often unreliable/flaky.

I believe they are attempting to become more upmarket now in pricing style and reliability.
But judging by this viewpoint, they still have a way to go:

they are cheap I had an aspire for 5 years ($500) and the power jack wore out so that's great to me. easy to get parts on Ebay cheap. I prefer Acer. I got an asus ($1200) and that was nothing but problem after problem their technicians are useless timewasters and I wil never buy one again. each person has preferences but to say a whole brand is bad is going to be debated. some techs hate Acer some recommend them. anybrand can have faults but how many how bad and quality repair service is important. I've heardgripes about each brand bu I went to Harvey Norman and the rep told me don't buy HP a quarter come back with problems and never heard a tech that likes them, one showed me a HP graveyard and said this is why you don't touch HP. never had one but I'll not ignore the warnings.

        • Ive owed all three brands you mention cant really recommend either of those. All seem to experience issues after a year of so over heating and excessive fan spinning also have 2 toshibas which were quite expensive back in the days all in scrap heap, came highly recommended by harvey normal staff. I recently converted to macs never looked back since then, cost wise biggest rip off ever but very reliable. Macbook pros are twice the price and half the specs than windows based laptops. Macs run quieter, cooler, fan never if ever turns on and operating system very smooth. That said not sure if laptop heat issues due to dedicated graphics cards and higher cpu speeds with turbo boost switching back and forth and built into plastic enclosure??

  • I've had no problems with my Acer but then I wouldn't expect to. Even with an awful return rate of, say, 10%, and I doubt Acer or anyone else is that high, that leaves 90% trouble free.

    I have this laptop.

For the price, it's basically the most powerful laptop around (though there have been some 3rd-gen i5 laptop bargains around the $500 mark but with integrated graphics).

It's even suitable for gaming in a pinch. SC2, D3, DoTa and Tomb Raider ran fine on medium settings.

  • WTF - the price went up by $30 after I added the item to my cart and I clicked on checkout??????????

    • Shipping?
