Was in Kmart Carousel, WA today shopping for a PS3 when I saw on the shelf a bunch of Maxtor OneTouch 4 500gb 3.5 external harddisks on clearance for $99.95. Cheapest on staticice is $144.95

mines ok. got mine standard price at OW is 121 if they still sell them. Most stores such as dse have sold out of stock…(maybe thats a bad sign)
Yeah, generally when you notice something sold out at one place, then on "Clearance" at another it's because they're quit-stock. Manufacturers stop producing&shipping them, retailers then just want to get them off the shelves, and the newer (better?) model comes in.
Stay away from Maxtor. Seagate have not been good in my book either (they bought Maztor, maybe absorbed some of their quality issues too haha).
Western Digital and Samsung are the best right now.
these were the ones that the post office cleared for $69 a few moths ago
looks decent considering to build one yourself would cost roughly the same… 500gb sata $79 + usb case $15…. obviously not as pretty to look at tho. btw Maxtor quality isn't the best, google it.

your probably reffering to maxtor basics 500gb. Differnt model…This one is meant to be better since its not a "basic" line.
Friend of mine got a 500gig one and it died on him within weeks…he'd lost the receipt too. :S
In contrast, mine is 4 months old and fine. However i only run it as a backup drive and wouldnt leave it on all day.
Went to Kmart Carousel on thursday to get one - found out the price is 140 ish ,$99 is for the 320gb one not the 500gb
was thinking of chasing something like this myself… whether or not anyone cares, I dunno, but word around the interwebs seems to suggest the quality of these maxtor hard drives is pretty bad… still a good price tho
