iPhone 5S / 5c Discussions

Howdy all,

With the new iPhones just freshly minted what's everyone thoughts?

Here's a good summary of both
http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/10/4376296/apple-iphone-5s-5c…

To be honest I'm relatively disappointed with the pricing on the 5c, $740 outright is no bargain. The biometric password looks good but only available on the top tier.

The specs look really impressive. Doubling of CPU and GPU speed is excellent. And they've really improved the LTE support to ten bands (!). It now supports LTE900, 2600 and 2300TD. The old 5 was handicapped measly tri band support (with only 1800MHz being useful). Not too sure on the fingerprint reader. There's no AC wifi in sight.

The biggest issue however is the PRICE.

    5S
    16GB – $869
    32GB – $999
    64GB – $1,129

Holy shit. $1.13k for a 5s? Very disappointed at that. For that money I'd be expecting 128GB.

Also I cannot believe that the 5c starts at $740 for a 16GB model. Thats basically the same price as the iPhone 5. I thought it would start at $5-600

And I am amazed that they are STILL selling the iPhone 4S 8GB for $530.

    • +1

Unfortunately LTE bands are required because LTE is so broken internationally (and domestically). Several news items has conflicting information on this detail though, so it is unclear to me what exactly is supported.

    • +8

True that, pricing is a real gouge. Considering you can now buy 2x Nexus 4 16gbs for not even one iPhone 5c.. bleh.

    • I'm surprised there isn't a 128Gb option.
Phone capacities seem to have stagnated.

      • +2

To be fair this isn't a problem with the phones but the memory. You can't get 128GB microSD either.

    • +2

Thats price range Nokia used to sell its 8000 series phones. See what it's share price has become now? Did Apple hire someone worked for Nokia years ago btw?

  • +15

Yeah that price is a joke. Isn't the 5c supposed to be the budget version?

    • +10

Definately C in iPhone 5C doesn't stand for "Cheap" :P

      • it does when you are trolling apple fans and you refer to the quality as 'cheap'

      • I guess they meant c for colors (yellow, green etc chep plasticky)

      • +1

it actually stands for colour but yeah budget my balls..

    • +2

I guess this is what happens when we believed in rumors :) Coz Apple never said officially iPhone 5c is a budget version of the iPhone

    • Apple never said the C stood for "Cheap". Everyone believed the rumour sites instead of waiting for Apple to confirm it.

  • +2

Cpu/gpu seem impressive, it's just too bad it's still only a 4 inch display. I wonder what effect will it have on the battery life. For the price the iphone 5C is a waste of money(the official case is also hideous), might as well get the 5S.

Fingerprint reader seems gimmicky, hopefully it's optional to use it instead of sliding to unlock.

The iphone 5C for the price they're selling it at is pointless imo. Instead of scrapping the iphone 5, they should of just kept on selling it instead of making an almost identical plastic version for slightly cheaper. They just cheapened the iphone name.

    • +8

They just cheapened the iphone name.

To be fair, the name has been dying for some time. This is hardly their biggest problem.

    • +3

      ^This..
The only logical reason to release the 5c is for the free publicity.

  • +6

I was honestly expecting a 399-499 phone. $869 is still a high income type of budget. Extremely disappointed.

    • +1

When I saw the US headline prices I thought we had a ~$400 phone.

  • +6

When they mentioned a plastic-y "low cost iPhone" I expected $400 mark. But $750, no way!

And who in their right mind would buy a lime green iPhone? Plus, check out the cases!

    http://images.apple.com/iphone-5c/home/images/color_green_pi…

Who ever designed them should be sacked immediately.

  • $750 for a "budget" iPhone? You're kidding me! seriously, why did they bother???

    • -2

Who said it's meant to be a "budget" iPhone? Certainly not Apple…

      • So what is it "meant to be" Flying Ace?
(Oh, and I didn't neg you above)

  • +2

Is the iPhone now a "world" phone? by this I mean is there just one global model, like the Nexus? Or is it still the lunacy of a US GSM/LTE model, an Europe/Australian GSM/LTE model and then CDMA. I get the CDMA/GSM difference, but I really hope it's now a global GSM/LTE phone.

  • If they did release the iphone 5c at $400, I believe it would hurt their 5s sales, and other models.

I'd say the cases are designed to be recognizable, mobiles are becoming a faishonable item nowadays and a cover either hides it's identity and somethimes makes a phone look cheap,

The price of the 5c also doesn't devalue the past models.

  • I had intentions of purchasing the 5C, but seeing how it's priced so high, won't anymore.

    What a joke…. $750 is a budget version?

    • +4

      Ofcorse, it is Apple..

  • +2

Those heavily invested in the iOS ecosystem will continue to buy iPhone, i.e. those who have spent substantial amount of $$$ on apps, music & video on iTMS, etc. Price is indeed a disappointment but then again we are OzBargain so it's more applicable to us to make that comment. Not too sure about the $130 differences between 5S and 5c though. You already spend $700+ on a phone, of course you are going to spend another $130 for much better CPU, graphics and other gimmicks.

And it's still 4". With its LTE improvement I think people might really want to utilise it on a bigger screen. Oh well.

    • Vendor lock-in works until it doesn't. Short term you are right, they will keep people in but in the long term this will just drive people away (or keep them away).

      • Yep. Been with iPhone since the 3G and spent a heap on apps etc. But I'm now seriously considering an S4. The iPhone is just too expensive and doesn't do enough for me.

I will still be able to put my music/videos etc on there (never invested much into itunes movies anyhow, I mainly use UV/Vudu/Netflix).

The only real downside will be having to rebuy some apps but most apps I use are free anyhow.

    • -2

      Those heavily invested

      I think you meant 'deluded'

      • +7

Deluded is not really correct. I for one have invested heavily in the Apple ecosystem, and have enjoyed the seamless integration between iMac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV etc. I was aware all along that I was paying a premium for that seamless integration.

BUT I couldn't agree more that they have lost the plot. The iPhone 5 was a yawn (I traded my 3Gs for a 4s when the 5 came out) and these new phones are really a joke, when compared to the Samsungs and HTCs.

When Apple lost Steve Jobs they lost their mojo. My next phone will be an android.

        • +2

Same here. Have invested heavily in the Apple ecosystem. However, I do not see the point of sticking to it.

I find it hard to fathom why I would go and buy a $900 (32GB) iphone 5s when I could buy a Nexus 5 for $400ish and then buy the next iteration when the Nexus 5 started showing its age. This way, I'd stay at the cutting edge for a longer period as well as (potentially) making a lesser investment.

        • Well, I for one have voted with my feet. - Or at least my wallet. I have just ordered a 32GB HTC ONE. While Apple are playing "Status games" with their phones, I am actually bored with iPhones. And IOS 7 looks awful to me. Others may like it, but I don't. Time for a change.

          -Mike
        • (Duplicate post. Sorry.)
      • +1

        I think you meant 'deluded'

When everything works out well for them it's a good investment. When things turn sour it comes a delusion :)

However in some niches (education for example) I still cannot find replacement apps on Android. I can see some schools "invested" in iPad, some exclusive educational apps and GarageBand. I wish they can be persuaded to switch to Android which would have much lower hardware cost and many more choices. However some apps just aren't there.

        • +2

In education, it's easier for the powers that be to control if a single, known hardware / software platform is used, less staff training, less worries about viruses and less opportunity for users to deviate from the standard.

Working in IT at a university in the 90s, it was easier to support Macs, rather than PCs because the Mac users could only stuff up so much. When it came to supporting the PCs it was a nightmare. You'd be amazed at the sh*t some people installed, played havoc with the network at times…

    • +3

why not? ozbargainers dont use phones?

      • -7

true one will not use Iphone.. :)

    • Maybe you can't put a price on fashion?

  • -5

I don't understand why there are so many complaints about the price. Mostly it Australia it has almost always been more cost effective to purchase the phone with an accompanying phone plan. Do people still purchase phones outright ?

    • I think it's more of a case where if the outright price is only $130 cheaper is the plan price actually going to be substantially cheaper? (Probably not).

      • +3

        sorry im replying to Aneurism

what??? never ever ever get into contract. just simple calc will show you how much you will end up paying in 2 years plus you are being locked, compare with paying outright and put in post paid sim card and free of lock! come on…….
and buy grey import phone! the different is like $600 here and $500 imported.
that $100 can become your phone credit for 5-6 months alone.

        • -2

Are you kidding me ? Before the cap plans came along i used to pay $300-400 a month on mobile bills. The price of the iphone is a drop in the pond.

        • +4

So… get a cap plan without an included phone… for less.

        • So the grey imports include insurance for breakage and lost phones ?

        • +2

I self insure paying hundreds of dollars less.

If I lose it I will just buy another damn phone.

        • +1

How much do you pay on insurance with a plan? I get 90 days free on my credit card, and its covered under my contents insurance anyway under portable items.

And to answer your original question, I got my Note 2 (AU stock) outright for $500. Coupled with a grandfathered LC cap at $11/month, find me a more cost effective equivalent alternative?

And since I tend to get a new phone every year (recoup costs through selling the old phone) its not worth my while locking myself onto a 2 yr contract. Im sure most ppl on OzB would share similar thoughts to me.

        • -3

I negotiated free insurance because I have 5 phones and 5 plans.

        • that insurance is most definitely not 'free'

    • +4

Are you serious ? Have you checked any of the phone posts on this website recently.
Just compare any S4 plan with a Telco with an outright price from Kogan, mobiciti etc etc
It's always cheaper to purchase the phone outright.
Its only people who cant afford to do this that get locked into 'plans'

      • +4

Mostly it Australia it has almost always been more cost effective to purchase the phone with an accompanying phone plan.

This is completely untrue. Apart from the lock in issue you are forced into paying for a high bracket plan that you don't need and pay a surcharge. The very least you pay more for a plan with a phone is $10 per month over two years, which pays for a Nexus 4.

        • -7

Sorry but if you don't use the phone enough to reach the high bracket plan then perhaps you should just buy an ipad mini.

        • You're true to your username :)

        • +1

And you are true to yours.

      • -2

You are referring to Android phones. I am referring to iphones.

        • Do people still purchase phones outright ?

          Did you mean:

Do people still purchase iPhones outright for full retail price when a they can get screwed by a telco for a slight phone price discount?

        • -1

even iphone i think if we buy grey imports and put tpg simcard, all in 2 years you will see the saving. and iphone warranty is international anyway? and if you use some unlimited plan, no worries, tpg or amysim or others also have the same plan, with much cheaper price.
do the math first then comeback here

    • do people still buy phones on contracts??

      • +1

Unfortunately yes, and most and convinced they are getting a good deal by the telco, despite all evidence to the contrary.

  • +1

I got roasted on here a few months ago for buying a black iPhone 5 64Gb brand new for $800, which I salary sacrificed.

Everyone said wait until the 5S, it'll be so much better.

I can have the last laugh at those now paying $330 more for a finger print reader, or not even being able to buy a 64GB 5C (max out at 32GB)

    • +7

Pretty sure with the recent S4 and Nexus 4 pricing, few here think that you got a good deal.

      • Isn't this a thread about iPhone ?

        • +5

It is a thread about whether this iPhone is a good deal… you do the maths.

        • +2

It looks more like a thread crap by Android users, to be honest. I'd be surprised if there was anywhere near this level of pro-Apple, anti-Android thread crapping in Android threads. Best to stay on topic.

        • Please do enlighten us how to stay on topic when you can't compare a product against it's current market competitors?

      • I didn't realize there's a 64GB nexus 4. Where can I buy one?

        • +2

If that is the one thing that matters to you buy an S4 (or S3, or almost any other android phone starting from $100) and stick a large a MicroSD card in as you like, even upgradable (unlike the iPhone).

        • Don't they have that thing where you can't store the apps on the card, only data?

        • +4

Nope. Only restriction is that widgets (apps that run on the home screen directly) need to be on the internal storage. These usually add up to about… 10 meg.

    • You forgot to mention the faster cpu, and most likely increased RAM.

      • +1

Because my iPhone 5 is soooo slow -lol

  • -2

    C is for crap.
    C is for crazy.

Kogan is selling iPhone5 for $719 at the moment ($729 few days ago, $739 few of weeks ago). When Kogan iPhone5 price drops below $700 (probably soon), I'll get one from Kogan.

Yes, I know there are many Kogan-haters out there, but I still think it is better than buying it from eBay or Gumtree.

    • -1

I think C means COLOURFUL… since they come out with different colours.

      • +2

I think Apple tries to make C stands for COLOURFUL but in reality it stands for CHEAP, since the materials and specs are all toned down from 5S. If they simply want colours, they can just make more colours with 5S

        • Someone suggested C is for China. A 'budget' phone targeted to the Chinese market…. well, good luck with that idea!

        • C stands for COLOURFUL but in reality it stands for CHEAP

but it's not actually cheap considering it starts at $739.

        • Cheap does not necessarily used for $. The word cheap can mean anything. i.e. cheap quality…

        • It stands for cheap-ER.. since it is lower, cheaper spec than 5s. Of course in Apple land, cheaper is still expensive :)

  • +1

I seriously thought the 5C ‘budget model’ would at least be $200-300 less than the 5S..
Also with the Apple Trade Scheme I read somewhere that it only deducts 10% off your purchase, and does not apply to iphone purchases? Can someone confirm this?
With the 4S still fetching such a high price, better off selling it yourself.

    • Also with the Apple Trade Scheme I read somewhere that it only deducts 10% off your purchase, and does not apply to iphone purchases?

      Isn't that US only anyway?

  • +1

i'd try a cheap android or lumia, see how good they are for under $200

i bought the lumia 520 recently and was pretty impressed (coming from Samsung Galaxy Nexus)

for $140, if it lasts one year and i can then get a new one, im in front…!

  • i couldn't believe Johnny Ive designed these. glad I switched to nexus devices before I had to see this.

  • I think Apple should have created a subsidiary to make the 5C phones in order to protect its brand image.

  • +8

    Samsung, well played.

A true Ozbargainer uses Adblock to save bandwidth ;)

      • At work. Lunchtime habit to read news and check Ozbargain.

  • they really needed Steve…
And I was to recommend my fiance an iphone, its just downhill for apple again.

  • Has it got a flashing notification light yet?

    • Thats what you call an android phone. They might introduce it in the future and make a big hype about it.

    • A fingerprint scanner or a notification light?
      What's more useful I wonder.

  • +6

Lol iPhone 5Same and iPhone 5Crap

  • Sure reminds me of Nokia, just that this nokia is damn expensive.

  • Very disappointed. Was going to get the 5c for my wife but at this price, hell no.

Also, no ipad mini 2 or Ipad 5 being released. What was apple doing in the past year?
