ASUS X201E-KX101H 11.6" Celeron Notebook: $299 @ Computer Alliance, $20 Ish Shipping. Brisbane

70

This is a fully capable "netbook" with windows 8. Not as thin as some ultrabooks but at 1.3kg it is perfect for traveling.

This is the 4gb RAM model and is cheaper than shopping express (which currently has 2gb RAM model on sale for $339).

RAM is not upgradeable (soldered to motherboard). However I've heard a low profile ssd goes well.

  • This could be a great system at the price, but I'm put off by the lack of a RAM slot and the small battery that can't be replaced.

    • …and the small battery that can't be replaced.

      Isn't this a large battery?
      2 Cell 5136mAh
~4Ah is pretty common I thought.

Anyway, anyone know what the battery life is in hours?
And is the processor acceptable speed.
1.1ghz Celeron looks too slow for windows use.

I'm just trying to decide buy/no buy.

      • My Sister has one with 2gb ram. It runs ok, but is pretty slow and locks up everynow and then. 4gb ram would be plenty for it, theres no use having more because the cpu would bottleneck it before the RAM I'm guessing. The best upgrade for it would be an SSD. Ok laptop for the price, there is a similar model for a slightly higher price with touch screen that has been on ozbargain a couple of times in the past. That would be better.

  • pretty bloody cheap

    • so who you gonna call?

      • Rusty Gates or Idie Jobs?

I bought the Touch Screen version (similar to this) with only 2Gb of RAM.
Only issue was the HDD speed. Replaced it with a 256Gb SSD (Samsung 840Pro).
with the SSD this is a great little light "netbook" and the SSD makes up for the lack of RAM.

    • Does the SSD help the battery life?

      • Theoretically, but I never did do back to back testing.

The SSD does make the unit very quite when compare to the HDD with fan going.

I added some installation information to my previous post (link above)

        • *quiet
ps does "friends don't let friends buy Celeron" still apply here?

I think Celerons are very capable chips now days. Gone are the days when Celerons were Pentiums' retarded cousins.

        • I am not an expert, but I think this old saying deos not apply to the current generation of Celerons. (Anyone, please feel free to correct me)

My main concern would be the RAM, but the main issue I found was the HDD.
With the SSD everything was smooth and quick.

        • Yes, was quite quiet!

    • This one's prolly the better buy as touch screen wobbles quite a bit when used.

corse I bought the touch x202e from earlier ozbargain at shoppingexpress.

      (move slowly grasshopper…)

  • I saw this before this post and was meaning to buy.

Bought one, hard to find a 10-12" Lappy for around this price with VGA and HDMI (yes, I need both).

I was considering a second hand lappy off ebay, but other than the slow old Acer One 1410, there is bugger-all on the market with what I need.

Shame it has 8, but I guess I had to learn sooner or later how it works…
