Who loves Aldi?

I started buying groceries from Aldi maybe 6 months ago and never looked back. The products are great quality and heaps cheaper than buying from Coles and Woolies. The best thing I like about Aldi is that most of the products come with satisfaction guarantee. So if I don't like them, just return it the next week when I do the grocery run. My shopping bills have gone down by $20-$40/week (for 2 people) and we got plenty of food. The only downfall is that I still need to go to Woolies just to buy a few things that are not available at Aldi (Luckily, the shopping village that I go to has Aldi and Woolies so it's not a big issue).

So who else love Aldi and what's your favourite item?

  • We shop at Aldi too. Top up at Woolies or Coles Here are my ratings:

    The Good:

Deluxe Ice Cream (Especially Cookies & Cream)
    Munchers (Chocolate Coated Peanuts)
    Flying Power (Energy Drink)
    Pringles Rip Offs
Ginger Beer (and soft drink in general)
Soft Centered Cookies (these aren't Aldi home brand though)

    The Bad:

Their Deodorant used to have a nozzle that keeps on breaking (this seems to have been fixed in their latest 'release')

Computers aren't the best but for the price go for it.

If you go to Hornsby Aldi on a Thursday morning there's a queue of pensioners :)

    • Here at Auburn, we got plenty of queue jumpers. +_+;
Missed the bike sale coz of 'em. Grrrr

Luckily Super Cheap Auto also sells mountain bike from today. $10 more & better feature I reckon. And NO stress on queuing. :P

  • Favourites:
    - Raisin Bread ($2 per loaf! bargain!)
    - Quick Oats (actually similar in price to Coles/Woolies but much better packaging)
    - Meat (has a use-by date of nearly a week due to vacuum packing; vs Coles/Woolies' 2-3 day best before)
    - Sliced mushrooms — cheap and convenient
    - Canned tomatoes - always in stock, and always less than $1
    - Hand soap - I think it was $1 for a 250mL pump pack
    - Free-range eggs - Only $2.99 for 700g? I always buy these

    Bads:
    - Cream Cheese. It was chalky
    - Pesto - it's the same price as in Coles/Woolies, but tastes worse
    - Beef Stroganoff sauce jar - that was pretty horrid
    - Microwave rice - I was foolish enough to buy dozens of packets of this without trying it first. The rice is all minced up. Not great.
    - Chicken/Beef Stock - It tasted like salt-water
    - Lesser range - I have to visit a Coles/Woolies as it misses things like: 'exotic' vegetables, Cous Cous, etc

    • The oats are good. Far better than the similar priced homebrand or black and gold.

  • Have to say I haven't found them any cheaper for most things and a lot of stuff I won't buy because the quality is poor. I buy a lot of stuff in bulk from Costco (their own brand is on the most part great quality), and then buy the weekly essentials at Coles.

As other have mention, I go first Aldi then top it up with either Woolies/Coles. Nice they have paywave, even with .5% surcharge it is worth to pay with ING ;)

  • I am a devotee as well. I love lots of their products. I changed after I got fed up with the Coles/Woolies specials each week being mostly junk food and fresh food was so expensive. I still shop once a fortnight at Woolies for specific items that Aldi dont have.

  • Aldi is great because it gives competition to woolies and Coles where they actually do better on prices. I find IGA is almost the same price as woolies or more expensive (maybe it's just my local). Honestly I'd rather Franklins than IGA. And then again I'd rather Jewel/ Flemings than Woolies. Back in the day…

One thing I prob stay away from at Aldi is their meat. Some people think it tastes great and it's cheap… But http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/feb/09/aldi-100-per…

    • Horse meat is a treat.

      • Lol. Gives the saying "Flogging a dead horse" a whole new meaning. mwahahah

That's ok, I don't eat beef, just the chicken which is actually seagull. :)

      • I guess you don't loose then…..a bird is a bird, right!!!???

    • Apart from their delicious chocolate, I've been disappointed with the quality of food at Aldi, it's barely better than other stores' value ranges. Their eggs and vegetables are terrible.

I also don't approve of them only selling own brands, their voyeristic/racist staff and their tax dodging. http://www.smh.com.au/business/retail/lifting-the-lid-on-ald…

That all being said, I think they provide much needed competition to the Coleworth duopoly and thus are actually good for Australia.

  • I use to be addicted to buying their weekly specials when they were on thursdays.

Use to wait outside the store for it to open and grab a bargain!!

Thats until i realised 90% of the stuff i didnt really need!

A few weeks ago i went when the store opened to get the shoe cabinet.

Some old lady was putting 5 in her trolley and i was helping her. Then i realised the stock was so limited but luckily i got the last white shoe cabinet.

Many people came after and asked where i got the white cabinet and i had to tell them there was none left

Some lady complained to the manager as she arrived at 10am and already there was no stock.

Hate when they have such limited stock.

Anyway i do love aldi. My fav:
    Beef lasagne
    Peri peri split chicken
    A2 milk
    Raisin toast

    • Yeah, just roasted one of those peri peri "road kill" chickens. Nom nom.

Agree with others thoughts. Here's a few more. All their chicken is good. We get whole chooks, roasting pieces, breast and thigh fillets. Their ham, salami etc is good value. Dips are much cheaper and yum. Goats cheese is $34 a kg compared to Coles 3 brands starting at $55 and up to $72. Frozen hoki fillets are good. Turkish bread. Burgen Soy Lin is awesome and About 30cents cheaper. Power force is aldi's version of Domestos and much cheaper than even the Woolies generic. Cannellini beans. Tinned tomatoes. Longer roll toilet paper is good quality and cheaper even than the majors on special. Spinich leaves. Almonds in the big bag, heaps cheaper. I like their renmano pesto.(they have 2 brands). Their sultanas are moist whereas as the majors generics are horrible. Their curry pastes are good. Olives. Their version of berocca is great value. Tandil dish washing liquid. Confidence Tissues. Dentifex toothpaste. Taylor's teabags.

  • I LOVE ALDI.
I always shop there first and if I can't find my item there then I try a different store.

    Good
    - strawberries
    - yoghurt
    - frozen vegetables
    - chocolate (though an incredibly high fat content compared with other supermarket brands)

I've been quite impressed with some of Aldi's food products, they are almost always cheaper, and quite a lot actually taste better than the supermarket gourmet brands. There have been a few duds but mostly good. They have a really good seasonal selection out for Christmas too.

    Aldi Product Comparison Brand Verdict
Specially selected fresh gourmet pate Maggie Beer Similar, but Aldi cheaper
Emporium Selection Triple Cream Brie King Island Brie Aldi one tastier
Cooking chocolate Cadbury's, Nestle Plaidstowe Superior to cadbury's, similar to Plaidstowe, but about 40% cheaper than Plaidstowe
Unsalted butter Woolworth's homebrand Similar, same price
Hash Browns Birds Eye, McCains Aldi ones have better tasting potatoes and less salt
Frozen blueberries Creative gourmet Aldi ones have more taste, creative gourmet ones bland
    Rolled oats Uncle Toby's Similar
Multigrain chips Grainwaves Aldi one inferior in taste
  • The 1kg peanuts aldi had late december last year made excellent peanut butter. I bought 1 bag then went back and bought 3 more bags

  • Aldi should start bring up ALDI GIFT CARDS then other gift cards so we can start playing around deals

  • Looks like Aldi got rid of their online price list.. http://smartershopping.com.au/ just redirects to Aldi's home page with no warning / explanation (argh). Boo. Way to discourage transparency.
