1kg Premium Zimbabwe Peaberry fresh roasted coffee $27.95 inc shipping

170

Hi All,
We're so happy to be able to bring the OzBargain faithful a fantastic deal on our newest coffee bean - a Zimbabwe Peaberry. It's an absolute premium bean, with only around 5% of beans being peaberry, and this one's a beauty - a medium bodied coffee that has a bright grapefruit acidity and smooth body when black and also has cocoa tones and a smooth sweetness that becomes more pronounced when used in milk. We've found it to be very versatile and suited to anything from French press right through to espresso.
For $27.95 (usually $45.95) you'll get 1kg of roasted to order beans including Australia wide shipping.

  • As this is a bargain web site, what would this normally sell for?

    • Hi there, this would usually sell for $45.95 including shipping, just amending that now, thanks.

just to add to that, to buy it in a brick and mortar store rather than online you'd be looking at much more than $45, so this really is a good deal.

Most coffee drinkers/buyers would recognise that anything under $30/kg is pretty cheap.

Very tempted… too bad still have some beans to get through so not sure the timing is right for me. Was very happy with the last Zimbabwe beans deal you had.

    • Glad to hear you enjoyed them

Just ordered. I thought the last lot were fine, although a fair bit of chaff amongst it. Finished the last kilo on the weekend.

Always up for something new and haven't had an African coffee bean before. Hopefully these go well in a mocha pot.

    • In a mocha pot you should get a nice balanced coffee with some very nice flavours (a touch of brightness with some nice cocoa tones) getting fully drawn from the beans :)

  • I want to buy this, but have no coffee grinder. any recommendations for a cheap entry level grinder thats fit for purpose? Also, how long can i keep these beans (if i grind only as required)? Do you generally keep n the freezer? I know this information can also be searched for, but i like personal opinions from enthusiasts :)

    • If you want a simple hand grider to use in the office get the Japan Porlex ceramic hand grinder. Bit of effort but no electricity and enough for a single or two cups.

      • Unless I got a dud, the metal on the mini Porlex handle is too soft. Mine became a loose fit after about 30 grinds and now flies off, usually spinning into my knuckles.

Porlex ok for single person but becomes a bit much effort for multiple espresso doubles or Turkish.

On the storage of beans, they're at their freshest for approximately three weeks, but are still perfectly drinkable for a bit of time after that. Regarding storing beans in the freezer, it sure is a polarising question, we personally don't do it due to the effect freezing has on the flavour oils in coffee. By freezing them, we feel that the best flavours from the oils in the beans can be lost, although many people do disagree (each to their own we believe). A good ceramic air-tight lightproof container is also a good way to store beans. For an entry level grinder, the Sunbeam em0440 is around $85 in a few different places and is a pretty good entry level electric conical burr grinder. You can also get a Hario hand conical burr grinder for around the $50 mark which is a good way to get a space efficient grinder if you're not worried about doing it by hand. Hope that helps a bit :)

    • Powered grinders, best bang for the buck:

      around $100 mark - Sunbeam Em0440
      around $200 mark - Breville BCG800
around $300 mark - Baratza Preciso

Above the Preciso the quality of grind isn't improving much, but rather the quality of build and how much coffee can be ground per hour without getting too hot.

      • Sunbeam Em0480 is another good one for around $150-$200. Very solidly made.

  • Not available in 0.5kg? :(

We're waiting on some more exciting arrivals next week (as well as more of this tasty bean) and will be looking to hopefully put together a 500gm deal then :)

  • I won't neg this deal but must say that I was pretty disappointed with the previous deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113316) from these guys. Maybe I just got a bad batch or it's just the way these beans are, but the beans looked/smelled old and stale. Instead of the usual shiny, darker brown these were a very dull, dry light brown.

My suspicions were confirmed when doing extractions: very inconsistent times/pressures with minimal crema and no flavour. I also had to grind much coarser than usual.

Sorry you've had a less than perfect experience. We never send out any old or stale beans and all orders are roasted to order. We use only the best quality beans however since coffee is a highly variable crop, the difference between different types and varietals can be noticeable. Beans having a shine on them means little to nothing in terms of freshness but rather the shine is more apparent in darker roasts due to the coffee oils being more drawn from the bean in the roasting process. We generally don't dark roast our beans because we prefer to keep the brightness in them, meaning that a lot of the time they will be less shiny compared to a typical espresso roast. Regarding the smell, the Ethiopian beans have a very distinctive smell, which we personally love, as have others, but this doesn't mean everyone will. And as I'm sure you would already be aware of, it's a common thing to have to adjust the grind for different beans due to their different roasts and the way this reacts to the extraction procedure. Once again, we do apologise for your disappointment, but we were more than happy with the general feedback from this batch.

  • Is there a reason you can't use the PayPal address for shipping?

    • We do get the PayPal address, however, its just a prerequisite of our ecommerce system that the buyer needs to provide shipping details on the form. But we sure can use your PayPal address if you want.

      • I don't know how many other frequent online shoppers are the same, but I sure appreciate those stores that allow me to complete the checkout process in mere seconds (I'm against browser auto-fill). Click click paypal password click click done.
