    Irons… I remember those things

  • Need a good deal on a cordless iron!

  • Awesome deal, did say online out of stock, but did order for a store pick up.

    Fingers crossed!

Any iron experts here want to weigh in on how this iron compares to every other identical look iron in the market, and what to look for in a household iron?

    • +3

I've got one of these things. Who knows if it's worth the $$$'s but god damn, it's the best iron i've ever used by far. Super hot, glides over everything with ease, clothes flat as a tack in seconds.

My wife used to iron clothes for extra money. She went through a LOT of irons. We mainly purchased Philips & Sunbeam. We learned to avoid irons with "coatings" like this one. Reason? Every time we saw one on display, it was scratched, chipped, or cracked and/or burned. Even ones that had bold claims on display cards that their coatings were impossible to scratch.

Skip teflon. What rubbish that stuff is! A single plastic button can take that stuff off and then it marks the clothes, peels off, gets in your lungs, etc.

We also avoided aluminium. It's linked to alzheimers in cookware, and is found in far too many things around us, including food packaging. (Are they crazy!?)

We always purchased stainless steel bases. The base material didn't make any iron last longer. They all died in a few months of hard use. But she ironed about 4x the norm. But - when it was time to throw the iron away, the stainless bases were always the hardest wearing, although you could see many scratches if you tilted the iron back and forth in the light.

I pulled many expired irons apart trying to fix them, and quickly realised steam is produced by squirting water directly onto the hot plate and/or heating element! These elements often went open circuit. So I suspected spraying the cold water onto the hot element was cracking it.

So one day I suggested she stop using the steam function altogether, and mist clothes with water in a spray bottle instead. (She also throws clothes in the freezer for 20 minutes, which makes them easier to iron apparently, but that's another subject.) The irons suddenly began lasting about two years, instead of 6 months.

We also avoided electronics wherever possible. That was the next most common fault… Irons with electronics such as auto-shutoff, they often died. In an environment with excessive heat and water together, that was no surprise.

Summary: Stainless steel base + use the freezer or a squirter bottle instead of the iron's own steam + no fancy electronics = a long lasting iron. Note though, that a typical home user probably wouldn't be affected by some or all of this.

      • Very insightful, and I've upvoted you. I own one of these irons, posted the deal at the time back in 2009, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/19776. It's last me four years now and is still going strong albeit I only use it about once a week at the most.

    its 80 at tgg

I don't get your point. $80 is more expensive than $59.95. You are looking at the wrong iron anyway.

  • I have one of these…bought one from Myer about a year ago for $72.

It is a very good iron indeed…the base plate glides over things with ease, heats up quickly, and cleaning it is a breeze…

  • was posted here but without the codes :)

i was going to mention this here but didn't due to the lack of votes previously - seems perhaps i was wrong…

Good price but what do you do with it?
