Hey guys, looks like Bing Lee are selling the latest Nexus 7 tablet for $299 which is the cheapest I've seen for Australian stock.

I know price matching isn't a deal but you can get further discount by going to Officeworks and price-matching down to $284.05 and then further discount by using ING pay-wave to a final price of ~$270.

Anyways, without price matching, the Bing Lee price is already a pretty good deal I think.

        • Thank you! People are acting like I'm crazy or tech illiterate. It's amazing how defensive people are when you criticise their favourite product.

Android, though a bit ugly and not particularly well designed, lets you do lots of things. That is why I got it. I have lots of files to manage. I like downloading a PDF off a website, storing it in a folder and reading it.

The app selection has a lot to be desired for in things like educational, reading, multimedia (I've seen far too many stretched out images) but lots more in terms of being more like a computer. It basically replaces my laptop when sitting in front of the tv as well as a media server. However if I'm reading this right, this thing is formatted in FAT32?? Does that mean no large files, or some workaround?

The Nexus 7 digitiser isn't particularly accurate or responsive (or maybe it's android as I've encountered it on quite a few devices), the screen has a little bit of lightbleed but no dead pixels so I think I got a good copy! The screen is amazing overall, though I havent tested for accuracy yet. I already expected it but it's still disappointing to me that PDFs render quite choppy compared to iOS, and I've tried all the top readers. The shape is a bit awkward being very long in portrait and very wide in landscape, but I think it just takes getting used to.

But for $270 I think it fits my purposes pretty damn well

        • Nah I went through and deactivated them individually. Or is there a better way to do this?

Yes, you just leave it alone. Why do you need to deactivate them individually? You're literally making things more complicated for yourself, then complaining about it.

People are acting like I'm crazy or tech illiterate.

If you're tech-literate, surely you can see why using a mac filter for security is pointless?

        • hey i didnt set it up. thanks for assuming though.

i want to remove it because it's ugly.

so defensive. do you work for google? even people working for google arent this apologetic.

        • Oh sorry, I forgot to put on my mind-reading cap!

You did say it was your wifi network, and that you are tech-literate. I think it's pretty safe to conclude that you would be in control of your own wifi network.

My wifi network has a filter for devices

so defensive. do you work for google? even people working for google arent this apologetic.

It only looks defensive to you because you seem to be making things harder for yourself, then complaining about it. You still haven't mentioned why you spent so much time deactivating the various services individually. Everyone else leaves it there. You're the only person here so far who has spent an hour setting it up. Others can do it in minutes.

So is the problem with your network setup, the way you set it up, or with the device itself? Does the device cater to the majority of people out there?

        • I just don't like the clutter. I get that stock android isn't for everyone, but I think I expected a bit more from the integrated apps - in store I thought they were a bunch of free crappy third party apps!

Essentially it takes a while because the stock apps aren't very good so you have to find decent replacements.

I'm just offering an honest opinion. Can you recommend a good pdf viewer? Preferably one that will allow me to access notifications while viewing pdfs?

        • Well that clears it up then - it took you an hour because you wanted to set it up the way you liked it, not because the device itself requires an hour to set up. Now that you're familiar with where the settings are, it'll be much quicker the next time too.

Which stock apps do you find lacking?

PDF viewer - I don't view PDFs that often so can't give a solid recommendation. Have you tried Mantano and SmartQ though? They seemed smooth when I tried it on my other devices.

  • I am lost

  • OW Glebe in and out in 15 minutes.

  • Boo its expired, checked binglee website.

  • Sucks. Looks like $299 is no longer the case, $333 same as JB.

No problems I will keep waiting for the next bargain price!
