      1080p IPS display

I believe so, there are 2 models listed on Asus website:

      Display: 13.3" 16:9 HD with EWV (1366 x 768) & IPS FHD (1920x1080)

The screen listed above is the EWV model.

      • well in the description it says: ZENBOOK Prime fields a vivid full HD 1080p IPS panel that brings visuals to breathtaking life with 350cd/m2 brightness and 800:1 contrast.

        that's misleading..

        • -2

          Zenbook Prime (soldered ram + ssd) = UX31A (1920 x 1080)
Cheaper Zenbook (no ssd, but you can DIY swap one in, and upgrade ram + low class gpu) = UX32A/UX32VD
          UX32A is the one with 1366 x 768
          UX32VD is the one with 1920 x 1080

VD is with the GT620M, it comes in both 1366 and 1080.

Do not get anything until next year for uni. Reason: Haswell processors are coming out - well they have already, but more products will be released with them. Haswell = 4th generation Intel processors, better battery life (50% increase in some cases)
      How to tell: Intel® Core™ i5 3317U <- See how it starts with 3xxx? It's 3rd generation.
You need to look for 4xxx.

Also - what degree is he in? Laptops aren't really necessary for first year. If he wants to play games on it, and use it for uni - the best option is to sponsor him for parts to build his own computer (cheaper and more powerful), and get a printer. Reason: Unless he is very dedicated to his studies, Microsoft Word at Uni can turn into Facebook. Cheap printer + cheap ink (from ebay) = printed lecture slides at a very low cost + no distractions with pen and paper.

Other option I suggest is Surface Pro 2, with 10% discount (for being a student), the price isn't too bad for what it is, you have to consider that the Surface Pro 2 has magnesium as its case, and that alone isn't cheap, with a surface pro 2, your son could annotate pdfs in university.

I'm in uni (almost end of 3rd year), don't get a 14" laptop, they're too heavy.
      Get 13.3" or under.
