Definition of bargain

How do we define good bargains? Is price-drop relating to product cycle considered as bargain? For example, Nexus 7 used to be $300. Now, due to new technologies/product cycle, it is now $200. Is this now considered a bargain? I think a lot of listings in OzBargain are related to the product cycle (items becoming obsolete or replaced my newer version hence discount) rather than a true bargain in the sense that a retailer decided to sell them with a lower profit margin compared to other competitors.

A bargain is a decent price for a good piece of technology. With your example regarding the nexus (or most new technology) is that in reality people don't need the newest and best.

This confuses me when everyone gets hyped for something like the new iPhone, but they use it for the same things they did with their old one….

I think I went a little off topic there, but a smooth running tablet like the nexus 7 is ideal for most. Therefore a bargain.

  • So if I buy something that is closed to the end of its product cycle (eg buying Nexus 7 now) at a cheaper price, it is considered a bargain?

    • Not a bargain if everyone else is selling at that particular price point. Just current pricing.

      • Thats my point. Every retailer is now dropping prices for iPad mini because new version may be coming out soon. Yet a lot of people still consider this a bargain. A lot of these deals ended up on frontpage

        • If it just started a lot of people who don't know would benefit by this.

I find this site very informative in regards to current discounts. I have no desire to keep track of every product cycle

For me, a bargain is when someone is selling the same item at a significantly lower price than everyone else.

For example, a case of Cooper's Sparkling Ale at $39.90, when everyone else sells the same thing at $55. (And at $50, it would be a good price, but not a bargain.)

  • A baragain is when it is for free!

    • A baragain is when someone shouts you a drink ;)

  • I like to think of it this way, anything lower than 40% of an average price. Say i want a pair of shoes that cost $100 everywhere. I see it on special for $60. Bargain. Anything more would be considered a good deal.
