I should point out to anyone wanting this for gaming, that it'd be pretty capable gaming machine as long as you buy a good video card for it.

4GB RAM is still plenty for current games, the CPU is definitely fast enough. Don't let the "i3" fool you, this CPU is not far behind the fastest i5's and i7's (and actually faster than some of them, including older models and laptop models, especially in games that rely a lot on single-core speed).

With this $160 video card from a recent deal, you'd have a very solid gaming PC for under $600.

(Or wait for all the video card price cuts and old model clearances due in the next few weeks).

      needs low pro gpu

Ah! Thanks @Riczter, yes, this case is small and it may need "Low Profile" video cards.

These are usually a bit more expensive and don't include the higher-end GPUs (because they need bigger fans and heat sinks to not overheat).

But there's a HD 7850 (so same as above deal) low profile card for $199, so not too much more, see here:

      http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?InventoryItemId=610239

This was the most powerful low profile available for a while, might still be.

EDIT: some one already posted this link, beat me to it

The current case requires a low-profile card to fit in the PCI-E slot. We can if you like swap the case for a standard ATX case with a 620W PSU [Honli]. You will save $10 if you change to a standard ATX case.

Send us a email to [email protected] if anyone is interested in this option. At least this will give you more room to put a GPU.

The look of the case is linked below:
      http://www.mrpcgeek.com.au/p/8689428/intel-dual-core-i3-4130…

      • This case also seems to have USB 3.0 front inputs, and the motherboard should support this (unlike the linked to page). Can't see how having usb 3.0 but only on the back would be helpful anyway.

        • Yes the standard ATX case does have 1x USB3 in the front. The motherboard in the above link is a H81. But using a B85 will support the front USB3.0 port which is what we are advertising with this special.

i3 is obsolete for gaming, all next gen titles recommend quad's. You'd want at least 8GB RAM too. Case and PSU are bleh quality, H81 mobo is ultra pointless as virtually none have front panel USB 3 and are heavily gimped elsewhere - look at the VRM's/cooling. Then only 80mm fan and no SSD. For a work box you can get away with a Celeron and Pentium, $150 for an i3 is senseless.

Depends on the game. You're still better off spending more on your video card than your CPU. You can see the i3-3225 beating old generation i7's and up there with current gen ones: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7189/choosing-a-gaming-cpu-sep…

The i3 will also handle video encoding and other HTPC tasks quite well.

Also note that the i3-3225 is 15% slower than the advertised i3-4130, so it really would be fine for gaming.

I too agree on the importance of splurging on a video card for modern games on a large monitor 23 inch plus.

A surprising number of modern programs still are single core or only utilize part of a second core. For instance, Skyrim on my quad core Intel PC uses about 38% on average.

    • +1

Definitely depends more on your gpu than your cpu.

i3 is not obsolete, and more than capable for current gen and next gen gaming provided you don't have insane expectations on graphic quality.

i3's are obsolete. Skyrim is a joke, its based off the Gamebryo engine from 2006. BF4, quad recommend, Watch Dogs quad recommended etc etc. Next year you'll be ripping it out and upgrading.

    • "Obsolete" and "may not run certain not-yet-released games quite as fast as a cpu double it's price" are not the same thing.

    • Anything not bleeding edge to you is obsolete, please stop getting information from your ass.
