  • good price on this one !

  • Will the Roku stream video content (MKV-x264) off a wired or wireless networked Windows 8 PC no problems? I've had massive problems getting a WD-TV to play nice to the point where I just want to throw it at a wall.

    • The Roku 3 natively supports less video formats than the WDTV ,but if you use playon on the Roku it will convert most videos on the fly ,I have yet to have a video not play.

    • WD TV plays most of the formats. I never had any issue playing 10gb mkv movie over the wired network. Using it for almost 2 year.

    • On a gigabit network? Failing gigabit hardware or tp link? Lol

  • is there a list of channels available.
are some movies free and if not how much do they cost?
sorry never had something like this before.

  • +1

"The Roku 3 isn't without faults. It still doesn't have an official YouTube channel, and those with hard drives full of digital media will also find the Roku 3's paltry file-format support lacking"

Gah, that's essentially what I wanted it for. WD TV seems to be come recommended.

    • There is a Plex Youtube app, if that helps.

  • Roku has plex app, so best is pair it with a plex media server if you want to play files on your LAN(home network). It's the perfect way, never have any dropouts, most stable media device I have ever seen and used

  • Was considering one of those Android tv boxes mainly for US netflix via the Hola app (free geo switch). This looks like less mucking about, though hola prob won't work with this. Thoughts?

  • Roku doesn't have any local DNS settings, it refers to your router. So there's no way an app like that would work. You need a geo-switching service that provides the addresses for their DNS servers so you can put those into your router. Services like Unblockus and Smarty DNS do allow for this, not sure that Hola does - Google suggests it doesn't.

    • So you can't manually set the DNS on Roku? Have to always use DHCP config? Doesn't sound right, as every network device I've encountered allows you to do this. Sometimes the option is just hidden away.

I'd agree about Hola not working though.

EDIT: hmm seems you really can't change DNS settings on Roku 3. That's a bit shitty.

  • This or WDTV Live, both are about the same price on Amazon.
