    Err.. Was $429..now?no price..

    Should have $299 in title/description. :)

    Sorry, derp, first post

There seems to be a lot of video card deals happening recently. The introduction of the new AMD video card line stirring prices up?.

    • +5

Yes, plus Nvidia has already dropped prices in response (the r9 290x was faster and much cheaper than the GTX 780, so Nvidia dropped it's price by $150).

      Yay for competition!

  • Good deal but I don't see why anyone would take this over MSY's 7970 deal for the same price unless they want to drive 3 monitors or game @ 2560x1440 or above.

    • Because 7970 has reports of coil whine, which would drive me nuts. Because EVGA seems to have the best reputation going. Because 670 seems to beat 7970 in the games that I'm interested in:
      http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/770?vs=830

Also because I'm interested in the forthcoming G-sync.

Think this is more appropriate as the Msy one is clocked at 1000mhz.

I bought the 7970 I hear slight coil whine on a menu for total war 2 but disappeared when gaming. No coil whine in game or on desktop mode.

Only went 7970 due to mantle!

        • I bought the 7970 I hear slight coil whine on a menu for total war 2 but disappeared when gaming. No coil whine in game or on desktop mode.

Yep, same thing I reported here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121265#comment-1667158

I noticed that first on TWR:2 as well; with V-Sync off the menus render at like 800-1100FPS and produce some intense coil whine. It seems that whenever the card starts to render something at above 200FPS it'll whine and the higher it goes above that, the more pronounced the noise is.

For me though, keeping V-Sync on or just turning up your eye candy in whatever game you're playing so that you stay a constant ~60 FPS keeps the whine at bay.

      • Nah, EVGA buries their head in the sand when there is a problem. Horrible support, not recommended.

        • so who to trust?

    • -3

      it's Nvidia and not ATI.

      • +11

        It's AMD and not ATI.

    • What if I do want to run 2 monitors, which kind of graphics card would you recommend? Would it matter if I was using 2 different kinds of video outputs? (ie hdmi and vga). I want a decent Graphics card, but not thinking of spending over 300$.
      Cheers.

      M.

    GTX 760 4GB $299 Mwave or GTX 670 4GB $299 PC case gear ?

    • 670 is slightly faster

  • +1

out of all these GPU deals which is the best to get "best bang for buck"?

    • +3

      7970 at MSY

    • Technically, it's the cheaper, low end cards ($129 7790 in this case).

But people will always recommend going for a mid-to-high-range card since, for a few dollars more, you can get something that will run most games on max settings for ages, and run next gen console games better than the next-gen consoles.

      The $299 7970 is a real steal.

  • OK, so what downsides will i have having a gigabyte and an evga 670 in sli. I realise that if 1 overclocks better than the other i have to run at the lower speeds. Also my current gigabyte is only 2gb, will the 4gb be utilised totally still on this card?

(Can i even SLI two cards with different memory amounts anyway?)

    • At the same clockspeeds the 4GB cards are slightly slower than 2GB ones because of the higher density RAM chips and looser memory timings as a result. All assuming you're not hitting the 2GB VRAM limit, otherwise the 2GB cards won't cope and you'll get major FPS drops.

SLI with a 2GB card will only use 2GB of the 4GB VRAM.

      • I'm not sure the memory compatibility is correct - here's an FAQ from the UK geforce site:

        http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/sli/faq#c19

Where it flat out says no to mixing and matching memory sizes. I heard this was to do with Nvidia removing support for 'Coolbits' which allowed this stuff. Strangely on the US version of the geforce site, reading the same FAQ it agrees with you and says you are allowed to mix and match, however I would err on the side of caution and not try it. The UK FAQ version references xxx GTX cards, whereas the US site references xxxx GTX cards, so my guess is it's an older version.

        • Thanks to both of you. Will hold out and hope for a 2gb 670 at a even cheaper price. I feel I may have missed my window though.

  • +2

OK PCCG now drop the 780 to under $500 please

    • +2

I've always wondered why people world pay so much for graphics card? Video games really that important?

      • +4

If you have the money, why not? You could ask the exact same of any enthusiast in any field, from driving to golf.

      • +1

Some people (myself included) like to run games with all the bells and whistles enabled. Of course as cards age compromises have to be made but high-end cards ensure these happen later rather than sooner. They're also good for multi-monitor setups.

      • +2

No, but it's addictive. If you get used to the smoothness of never dipping below 60 FPS on your lovely 1440p monitor and the breathtaking glory of max settings, then the first game that makes your card struggle to do this will start you itching for an upgrade.

I have to force myself to stay in the mid-range and play my steam backlog, not latest titles, so things don't get silly…

  • +3

I want one, but I don't need it. Damned good prices.

    • +1

You are not a true Ozbargainer.

      • He never said he didn't buy it anyway…

  • Gday mate should I buy this graphic card or the 270x by amd? thanks waiting for your reply

    • for what is the question…, what do you want the graphics card for ?

    • The 670 is noticeably faster:

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-rev…

(Surely the 270x is more expensive, too?)

    • The 670 is the faster of the two (and 4GB of memory vs 2GB, if gaming across multiple monitors or higher resolutions matters to you), since the 270X is a rebranded and slightly improved 7870.

      • thanks for the reply fellas - I am using the 560ti top edition at the moment but I keep getting the display has stopped responding message so I am in need for a new graphic card - 670 and 270x are very similar in prices and I am using just a single monitor nothing else

Caved in and got one should be a great upgrade from my gtx 560, thanks OP.

  • -1

ROFL 4GB 670. Its 256 bit, it will never saturate that memory. Get a 7970/R9 280X - 384 bit and 3GB RAM. And yes, avoid MSI, cheap crap.

    • +2

Why is he getting voted down? Its true that even though it may have more memory (4GB v 3GB), its performance will drop if you somehow manage to make it go past 2GB under load. This is because the bus is generally allocated as 128bit per GB and thus the 256bit bus is for 2GB.

As such, if you think you'll be using more than 2GB under load, a card with a 384bit bus would be the better choice.

    • when you say 'saturate', do you mean fill? If so, can you provide a link to the technical reasoning that a 256bit bus can not fill or saturate 4GB of memory. Thanks

  • Will this work on a thermltake 500w powersupply? Currently running gtx 560 OC…

    • +3

I clicked on the link for you and then read what it said under "requirements". 500W minimum.

      • -3

No reason to be a dick. Not all PW are equal.

  • Whats better bang for the buck,
    I have a Sapphire HD 6950

is it better to get another 6950 (as theyre very cheap)
or will a 7970 outperform it way more?

  • Doesn't appear to be there any more.

  • looks like the deal is gone… is it worth getting this instead?
    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…
(EVGA GeForce GTX 760 Superclocked 2GB)

    • Probably not. EVGA is a very good brand, but there are plenty of 670s for less than $300 right now, look on staticice.

      Here's one for 270: http://evatech.com.au/more/272-inno3d-pcie-gtx670-2gb.html

Worth waiting for a really good deal IMO, these should keep coming for a little while…

      • thanks .. i'm looking at 770s from amazon as well… tempting as it comes with free games too.

        • +1

Don't forget the best deal from the last few days:

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121265

$299 for performance on par with a 770.

        • that one lacked 2xdvi ports… unfortunately.

        • +1

          1 dvi + 1 hdmi…what's wrong with that?

        • i have 2 monitors with dvi ports (dell u2311h) currently connected to my 6850. so i don't want to fluff around with buying new cables and stuff - just replace with new card, install driver and start playing games ;)

        • I think a HDMI-DVI adapter will cost less than the more expensive video card…

        • nah. i don't really want to go the adapter route. prefer to keep things simple… so i'll rather wait it out for a better deal :)

        • Simple? What's complex about a $2 adaptor 5cm big? You do know dvi and hdmi are identical standards right?

        • yes, simple. When it comes down to troubleshooting, you don't want to have an additional thing to worry about when you could've avoided it in the first place. I don't have heaps of $2 (that is assuming your price, I'm betting the decent ones cost far more than that delivered.) adapters lying around to troubleshoot.

I like to keep things simple and straightforward. It helps reduce clutter behind my desktop. (and 5cm is an annoying because my 3 meters DVI cable is heavy and that creates unnecessary weight stress on the HDMI port - I do consider such things.)

Besides, I am not in a hurry, the EVGAs are bound to drop in price this/next week due to the incoming models.

same things with sata cables. after the $0.90 for 3xsata cables i got from meritline, never again ;)

It's digital, there is no "good" or "bad".

        • yep there is good and bad. if you can infer from my previous comments. the sata cables were DOA. (thus my initial comment about fluffing around for adapters and stuff)

Thanks anyway, it's my requirement, I am pedantic like that, don't worry about it.

That's a sh!t tier sale there breh, considering the 760 outperforms it and has lower power consumption.

    • It's the opposite?

  • +1

Fail. Just got an email that they don't have the stock to fulfil my order, and I'm the OP. Did anyone else get this?

    • Seriously? Everyone else got theirs but me?
