$79 Vodafone Huawei G300+ Prepaid Mobile Phone @DSE (Save $20)

200

This is the best value 4" (800x480) Android smart phone on the market for those wanting more usability than the bargain basement low-res $39.50 3.5" Huawei Y201.

This is a 850/900/2100Mhz G300+ model. The G300+'s 900Mhz giving dual-band 3G on Optus. Though worth noting that the usual G300 bootloader unlocks to allow for a custom G300 ROM to be installed have been reported to brick the phone. That may still be possible by using an official bootloader unlock code from Huawei.

Alternatively BigW has the $79 Vodafone Huawei G300, though it's only a 850/2100Mhz 3G capable. Those units allowing effortless user modded ROM installation.

Next model up would be a $99 Telstra Huawei Y300. It betters the G300+ with it's dual-core CPU, front-facing camera, JB 4.1 and slightly larger 1730maH battery. However, Y300 has no 900Mhz 3G band support which the G300+ has, important for Optus users to get 900/2100Mhz 3G. Both the G300+ and Y300 are performanced limited by their 512MB RAM.

Specifications
  • 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7227A Cortex-A5 CPU, 512MB RAM, Adreno 200 GPU
  • 4" 800x480 IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors with scratch resistent Gorilla glass
  • 1500 mAH battery
  • FM radio, GPS, bluetooth, wifi. Can provide USB or wifi broadband tethering.
  • 5MP rear camera with flash
  • OS: Gingerbread 2.3. An official ICS 4.0 update available here. Many user created ROMs at modaco.com including Jelly Bean (4.1/4.2) CM10 and MIUI based ones.
  • Memory: 512MB RAM, 4GB Flash with 2.5GB user space. Up to 32GB microSD external storage
  • 3G UMTS: 850, 2100 MHz with 7.2Mbps data. G300+ model includes 900Mhz too - good for Optus.
  • GSM: 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
Extended battery

1800ma battery to give 20% longer battery life is US$12-shipped.

Thanks for this & your many earlier mobile posts ruraro.

I use the G300 - i prefer to use phones i can afford to lose…

  • I don't see it in current brochure, are you able to scan and post it?

  • I've had mine for about 6months running ICS but has been showing its limits and looking to move to a chinadroid

    • I've had mine for about the same time and starting to get frustrated with the lack of internal storage and slow cpu. If I had the money I would upgrade.

      • Around ~$120 will get you a quadcore chinadroid.

        • ^ QHD screen only though, no 720p ones that cheap yet.
Also contrary to what the OP says, I've been using a 850/2100 phone on optus/vaya and being on solely 2100MHz hasn't been any different than when I had a 900/2100 phone. As of yet I have not gone far out enough for 3G to drop out.

Could've written the exact same thing myself!

  • Is A5 single core? If single I would suggest Y300 instead for $99.

    • Y300 isn't quad band, important for people on Optus.

      • OK but 1GHz single core CPU will lag a lot.

        • CPU will lag a lot.

what if you just use it to make calls ?

        • It's 2G only

        • He said make calls … do you need 3G to make calls?

        • do you need 3G to make calls?

If you are in country areas, it can make a big difference. Telstra's 3G coverage is larger than their 2G coverage. So there are areas where a 3G phone will connect, but a 2G phone won't.

Guys i just came from Highpoint in Melbourne, while was there went to Dick Smith, the phone price still 99$ when i asked the saleperson about the 20$ off,he said there is not suck a deal!

It will be active after 3 PM today and store should be able to sell it at reduced price. The actual deal starts from tomorrow.

He didn't need to be so rude about it! :p

  • Y300 at $86.33, only $17 more if you live nearby.

    • From what I can see, the only difference between both is battery capacity, am I right?

      • As in the description:dual-core CPU, front-facing camera, JB 4.1 and slightly larger 1730maH battery.

So it is definitely better if you are not using Optus.

        • I didn't realize computer shop have it, may get one for my son to replace his broken Y210.

Thanks, will match it as officework to get it down to almost the same price as G300+.

        • Finally got the G526 deal instead.

  • CPU too slow, if you use telstra, huawei Y300 definitely worth the extra $20.00. Use it 3 months, a very good phone. But thinking upgrade to Y320 (DS, 129.00 unlocked)Dual core 1.3G or G510-(129.00, Optus, but cheap to unlock)-dual core 1.2G 4.5" display)

    • I am just thinking can you call it an upgrade with Y320? Except Android 4.2? 2MP via 5MP, no face cam.

Is the screen better except resolution?

      2MP camera; Display Size: 4.0"
      1.3GHz dual core processor
      Android v4.2 Jelly Bean
      Wi-Fi: 802.11 b⁄g⁄n + HotSpot

      • Only 2MP rear vs 5MP.

  • Outstanding presentation op.
I am in the market for a MTK6589T(urbo)/generic phone; ~ <200.00. just with:
    2100/850, JB 4.2 +preferable CyanogenMod(though not essential).

    • The G526 deal is better.

  • My Target purchased one was gonna cost $75 to unlock via Vodafone.

Depends on when you bought-some IMEIs are free to unlock others aren't.

Comes with GB by default but Huawei offers a ICS upgrade.

Only VGA video recording but the 5MP rear camera captures some nice photos.

At 223ppi, the 4" screen is not that bad-sharp enough for me.

SIM comes in and out easily enough.
