  • Cool looking watch

  • Good price for Aussie stock.

      Wow, great story. Thanks.

      • cant be coincidence that they dont last more than 4-5 yrs even though they say that should last 10 yrs or so

        but… $99 watches… cant expect too much

        • yep i had two both died…. same way as yours got both fixed under warranty only for them to die again in relatively quick time. They told me i hadn't of charged it properly or long enough, i was like how long do you want me to leave it under light? because i do need to wear it at some point!

$99 is a good deal no issues there but i rather not go through the headache again :)

        • I got my first ecodrive watch back in 2001 from Japan, titanium model which was worth $750 AUD back then, still going strong, never had to repair it.

I guess it depends on each model perhaps?

      ecodrives

      they don't have batteries

      • +2

they do have batteries but the chemistry is unique but like all batteries they can fail

      • -2

        capacitor technology…..

    • +4

I bought my old man an eco-drive watch when they first released it for his 40th birthday. He used it as a daily watch for many years and still wears it for stints now and then. That was almost 18 years ago.

Thanks op for this, bought two of the $99 watches on this page http://www.starjewels.com.au/watches-1/citizen/eco-drive-wat…

    • I have had my Ecodrive since 2003. Has never missed a beat.

    • -1

geez what's with all the negs, better to let people know the truth behind these watches than have his comment hidden no? I've got two that are about 10 years old, they haven't been ticking for the past five years (even after leaving them out in the sun for a month) so the "solar powered" function doesn't last forever and the battery (capacitor?) needs replacing. Really you're better off getting a standard battery powered watch that say lasts two years and replacing it for $5 every 2 years rather than paying $30 for one of these capacitor type batteries every 5 years. Eco Drive, not so economical, ecologically friendly then? Nup, gotta chuck dem batteries out too.

      • Forgot to add a positive - kept awesome time while it worked, lost maybe 2-3 secs/month.

  • +1

I have 2 eco-drive and bought one for my partner.
2 of them over 3 years and the other one just pass a year, never have a problem

    P.S. I hate seiko

    • Wat? Seiko kills it.

    • +6

      P.S. I hate seiko

The deuce?? Pistols at dawn, sir!

    • -1

what? seiko, citizen and pulsar are same company…..that's why they share the same capacitor technology

      • +3

Are you absolutely sure about your claims, edgar?

My understanding is that Seiko and Citizen are the Ford and Holden of Japanese watch brands, with Pulsar as an offshoot brand of Seiko (and Lorus of Citizen, or is it the other way around?). See details here: http://www.thewatchsite.com/12-reference-articles-faq-model-…

Capacitor technology likewise - it proved unreliable and Seiko batteries made a comeback. See details here: http://www.thewatchsite.com/12-reference-articles-faq-model-….

        • -2

if that is the case, my marketing lecturer from Uni is wrong ….
what she told me was Seiko is the original, citizen is the low end (different company under same umbrella).
Pulsar was introduced to Australia as people rejecting seiko (due to world war hate….. )

        • Hello. Just thought we would help out here. Seiko and Citizen are 2 completely separate companies. Other brands under the Seiko umbrella include Pulsar, Lorus and Michel Herblin. Citizen also owns Bulova but that is managed and run completely separately from Citizen head office.

  • Not a bad price .. bought one… that's one Christmas present out of the way :)

  • Been a while since we had a good watch deal here on OzB. Anyone remember the Bulova one from last year? I'm wearing mine right now;)
This Citizen Eco watch is a very cool looking watch. I have a similar one. More than 2 years without missing a beat.
The idiot above who posted about duff batteries obviously didn't read the instruction manual.
These watches don't need to have battery changes. They charge by exposure to light, so all you have to do is wear it outdoors for a day or so or leave it near the window for a while.
If the battery seems dead, just leave it near the light and it'll work fine.

Anyway - having ranted - am now desperately trying to think why I need to buy yet another watch.
I think it's either the watch…..or the relationship.

    Edit - it's the watch

    • +3

Mate, the reality is that ALL rechargeable batteries have a finite life of charge/discharge cycles, after which they are useless. It's a fact of life, no matter how much we may wish otherwise and calling people "idiots" doesn't change that.

  • +1

Date is a pain when the watch doesn't know what month it is.

It means at the end of most months you have to fiddle with getting it in synch.

    • Sounds like you want a perpetual calendar. Some Japan only Citizens have them, but not the average eco drive watch.

    • If you're looking for a good perpetual calendar, that shows date and month on an analog dial, and won't break the bank then check out the Seiko Premier line:

      http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-perpetual-cale…

No fiddling with the dates at the end of each month, it's a quartz kinetic movement that remembers the date till February 28, 2100.

  • Any special for women Eco-drive?

    • +2

Completely blown away with the response to our first offer! We will look at offering a small selection of Eco-Drives for ladies next week. Thanks

      • Awesome! +1 for the ladies selection.
Cant wait. Hope it doesnt all get ozbargained before i get in

  • +1

    Rep,
any cheaper for the BM8475-34E or BM8475-26E?
    thanks.

    • +1

Unfortunately not just yet. We will work on getting the prices lower on those as well but dont think that we will be able to get them anywhere near $99. Thanks

  • I've got a Citizen Eco Drive (at0980-63e). I think they're great personally. Had it about two years and hasn't missed a beat. Not having to worry about the battery is a welcome benefit. Getting one sub $100 is a good deal IMO.

  • +1

i like the eco drive series but still can't justify buying a watch nowadays when it's core functions are already replaced by the smart phone…

hope rep can have more attractive deals across the eco range so I can get a set for myself and wife as a gift this dec. ;)

    • +7

I've always thought it was more practical to have a quick two second glance at your wrist than fumble round in your pocket/handbag/manbag to check your phone for the time.

      • +2

… But a fumble in your pocket gives you so much more…

      • said pocket is dedicated for phone and my wife's fumbling for said phone. ;) ;)

    • also a fashion statement I guess. classy men have watches? :3
or classy men enjoy wearing good watches rather.
