  • S%&T..good price…I want one….but I have 2 Leathermen already.

Must put down mouse and step away from keyboard.

I've got one of these - they're very handy. Four screwdrivers (Phillips & flat, in two sizes), pliers and wirecutters with a grip that's more comfortable than it looks - plus a bottle opener (the carabiner). Under-$50 delivered is a bargain.

Just bear in mind that this model has a serrated blade, which can be tricky to sharpen/strop.

  • Sold out at selected seller, I had to get it direct from amazon instead, cost me $51.83 so no longer under $50. Didn't stop me from grabbing one though…

  • Excellent price, and an awesome tool. Sure you can buy multi-tools cheap but this has the quality.

Has anyone successfully imported these from Amazon before?

I'm concerned by the "it can be opened quickly with one hand" description because I swear Australia customs lists knives that can be opened with one hand as restricted imports (granted, this is a multi-tool).

    Found it: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4369.asp#e1066

    • I don't see how it can be opened quickly with one hand with that design :|
I understand why you're concerned but it doesn't look like a quick-opening knife i.e. one you can flick open/press a button.

      • Bought one from CotD way back when.

Yes, the knife can indeed be easily opened one handed by the thumb. It swings out very quickly. And it's damn sharp!

A workmate had AU customs stop a plastic "butterfly comb" (hair comb shaped like a butterfly knife) because it was knife like…

I've purchased numerous Leatherman tools from overseas (not Amazon though). Have not had any issues with customs, even with ones that technically have one hand opening blades. For example, I ordered a Charge from a US Ebay seller. Customs here did open the package, but the note they left inside said they found nothing wrong.

More recently, I ordered a Wave from a different US Ebay seller (again, this model has blades that you can open with one hand). This time the package wasn't even opened by customs.

Basically, from my experience the fact that multi-tools are considered 'not controlled' by customs (ie you are allowed to import them) seems to trump the fact that one-hand opening knives are 'controlled' (ie you can't import them without a special license).

See this customs page under the 'common weapon list'
      http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4372.asp

Aus customs have some interesting rules. Along with multi-tools, here's some other things that you are allowed to import:

      standard kitchen knives; single edge swords; traditional samurai and katana swords; bayonets designed to be fitted to a firearm; two handed opening knives; rubber training knives; multi tools; stanly knives; khukri; kukri; bowie knives; machete; spears; spear heads; bolo; dao; iaito; jian; kopis;

In other words, no worries with importing that Samurai sword you've always wanted, but don't you dare import a knife that can be opened with one hand because that could be used as a weapon!

TL;DR You won't have any customs issues because multi-tools are allowed.

      • Thanks fellas. Suppose I'll give this one a whirl then!

Yes I have. My charge TTi and skeletool and the little version of the skeletool are from the US. Aus prices are triple!!! Anyway they're considered multitools and not 'knives'. Customs wont have a problem with it. My last multitool import was in Sept last yr.

  • Coming up with " We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order"?

    Anyone else got this?

Just got it even cheaper, Seller is new and from China. It's definitely worth the risk imo considering I can just go through Amazon/do a chargeback if things go wrong.

  • Leatherman New Wave is the one to get, but wait for it to come down in price (<US$50) hopefully Black Friday sales.

    • From experience the surge is the one to get

      • Really depends on what you are after. The Surge is a great tool, but it is quite heavy and bulky compared to the Wave. A lot of people find that the Surge isn't the best to wear on a belt etc due to this.

For most people, the Wave is a great choice. It's cheaper than most of the 'Charge' range, yet still has all of the main tools that you could want. Yet it is still light/compact enough that you can wear it on a belt all day.

Edit: if someone were really keen to get a Surge, I'd be suggesting they wait a bit anyway. Leatherman have just released a new version that has a number of improvements (better pliers better blade holder etc). Not available anywhere that ships to Australia yet, but shouldn't be long.

  • Last year I tried getting a Leatherman from amazon but they had stopped shipping to AU due to customs issues (i think). From memory you can't bring in knives that can be opened single handed but multitools are an exception. Maybe they sorted out the customs officers who didn't understand the rules so they could start shipping again.

Ordered one so we will see. Thanks.

  • I got one for Father's Day (from a US ebay seller, I believe). It is the best multi-tool I have owned because it does the included features really well, rather than cramming in a bunch of sub-par tools.

  • Had a skeletool for years. Very good strong locking blade, not thin like swiss army knife. best feature: combo belt hook/bottle opener.
Might get another one for the mrs.

  • If anyone has a Leatherman Wave, you might not know that there is a hidden lanyard/clip right on the inside bottom handle where the saw is.

Great if you wanted to throw on a bit of Paracord!

  • You CAN get these knives confiscated by customs because they have a blade that can be opened with one hand/finger/thumb. I ordered a Leatherman Crater from Amazon earlier in the year and now customs has it! It was the multitool version with the screwdrivers and bottle opener. I didn't even know about the stupid law till I contacted customs for a better explanation. It was even listed on the Leatherman .AU website when I ordered. Pretty stupid law. I went to Japan in September and people were bringing back Samurai swords but I can't import a pocket mulit-tool!

    • +3

The Crater is much more of a knife than a multi-tool though (although you could argue that since customs don't actually define what a 'multi-tool' is, it is open to interpretation).

The Crater is very obviously a knife with a couple of extra functions included (hell, its even listed under the 'knife' section of the Leatherman website).

The fact that you can buy it in Australia has nothing to do with whether or not you as an individual can purchase it or not (as bizarre as that may sound). There are plenty of one hand opening knifes that you can buy from retail shops in Australia that would never make it past customs if you or I tried to import one.

I'm obviously preaching to the converted though- sorry to hear your customs experience was about on par with mine :(
