Don't forget you'll have to buy a memory card

    • +1

8GB is like $20 in now days. Oh boy I paid $40 for that bloody thing!

      • +1

Man I remember paying $200 for a 2gb memory stick like 6 or 7 years ago, took a lot of bargains to recover that one.

        • That's how much I paid for the memory stick to go with my PSP, which was almost $400. Then I bought a 4GB stick (something like $155 USD), then an 8GB, then a 16GB. And every time I bought a new stick I felt I got the deal of a life time, but they were all over $100.

I passed on the 32GB stick.

        • +1

I paid $320 for a 128Meg SD card for my Pocket PC years ago. Had to wait for Compaq (yes is was a long time ago) to get them in as at the time no-one else sold them in Aus.

      • 8GB is nothing. KZM has like 2-3GB of updates alone.

  • where did you find this advertised?

  • This was advertised in an email to EB World members with a next-gen console preorder. However, the deal will be available to everyone.

    • +2

Just a warning, 3G model is terrible. Cant even game online on 3G which is what i bought it for. Useless. Better to buy a wifi one and a 3G dongle.

      • +2

The point to the 3g one is the GPS.

  • this is totally EB just having a go at the 188 deal big w is having tomorrow

    • +1

      That's business.

      • More bargain for us.

      • -5

        I say bad business lol.

By that time, people will be spending that money on next gen. Best to get them in now.

        • Unless you're on a tight budget, there really isn't that much at launch to set you back on , unless you're going both at launch too. For me, I'd rather go with EB for the box (killzone fan) and the carrots as well as not having to worry about stock levels

        • -4

Oh come on EB employees, downvote me again LOL

        • Don't you get a box with the Big W version?

Is it in an official bundle, or are they just giving you a Vita and a separate copy of the game?

        • +1

Big W version is the vita and separate copy of game.

        • Actually I was just there. It's a bundle I think, because it had its own price tag. Except it was empty in the cabinet so I couldn't see for sure. I didn't ask the sales clerk because he was very busy.

        • +1

I bought the Big W version. The game and vita were separate.

    • But this doesn't start for another 3 weeks…

I guess they want people to hold off purchasing from Big W tomorrow, not that Big W would have had enough stock to go around anyway.

  • +1

Nice deal, $11 plus 3G and a month of PS Plus with all the free games that will entail. Eb may have just bought me off!

    • The timing looks so strategic doesn't it?

  • pity remote play is not fully remote as they originally advertised with the PS4. ah well hopefully they could make a 4G version and a update to let that happen.

    • So you want to play ps4 @ work? Why is 4g required? Unless for online gaming!!!

      • Maybe he commutes to work by train and wants to play it during the ride?

  • Anyone know if this is the OLED or 'new' LCD version?

    • Guessing it'll be the OLED one.

      • +5

Yeah, from what I can tell, the new one is still Japan only which is good news to me - would much prefer an OLED screen over a slightly thinner/lighter chassis.

        • -2

Why is it 'good news' that it's Japan only? Would its presence here offend you? The choice between OLED/LCD comes down to personal preference between accurate colour reproduction, outdoor visibility and whiter whites (LCD) vs colour saturation, true blacks and response time (OLED). I personally prefer LCD in almost every situation outside specific use cases (Moto X's active notification). Also, in The Verge's review, it appears more than 'slightly' thinner.

          http://cdn2.sbnation.com/assets/3522971/DSCF2878-1024.jpg

Even if you split the screen debate down the middle on account of personal taste, then there's the lighter, thinner body, the move to industry-standard Micro USB charging and longer battery to consider.

        • +5

I think you are over-analyzing my position and attempting to create some kind of flame war, which is pretty amusing. There's plenty of that for you to sink your teeth into with the new console launches around the corner.

To clarify, [personal taste] I'm glad that the fact it is Japan only can confirm that this will be the OLED version - which I [again, personally] prefer over the features of the new LCD model. Regardless, the LCD version is slated to replace the OLED version in Japan to reduce manufacturing costs, so its "presence" here could actually imply that OLED stock was being discontinued as opposed to offering additional choice.

        • -5

Flame war? Not even. I don't own a Vita and don't have a horse in this race. I'm taking issue with your statement that it's good news the new device is Japan only. Ergo, it's somehow a positive that it's not available here.

Even if the new Vita was being stocked in retailers right this moment, it's going to take a long while to phase out the original. You can still find PS3 Slims in stores now and if you don't mind buying used, the PS3 Phat is still kicking. Outside of a display technology debate that laymen will never notice, there is little downside to the new Vita being widely more available to those who want it.

        • +4

OK. To play it straight, in answer to: "Why is it 'good news' that it's Japan only? Would its presence here offend you?"

Choice is awesome, man! When it actually exists without conditions. In this case I would personally prefer having the OLED version remain the factory new, widely available, warranty-covered, locally-sourced option.

I'm sorry that you take issue with my personal opinion.

        • +2

I've actually used an LCD screen Vita whilst I was in Sofmap in Tokyo last month (picked myself up a 64GB card whilst I was there) and I can tell you that the OLED is superior and not just a choice. The LCD looks washed out in comparison and has a yellow hue.

        • +2

It's a shame they couldn't combine the slim model AND an OLED screen. I don't think the slim model is actually cheaper iirc. If they're going to charge the same price they shouldn't cheap out on materials.

      • +2

Yep, oled. LCD models don't exist outside of Japan or importers (PlayAsia, for example).

All future Vita deals need this in the deal title, it's a recurring question in every thread lately :)

        • +1

It will be annoying for OPs to need to type it in the title. It was said by sony they had no plans of releasing it outside of Japan at this time.
People should just read more -_-

    • +4

People are seriously arguing LCD is better than OLED? OLED is the future, all our TVs will eventually have OLED. The new LCD vita is simply to keep costs down by offering a cheaper product. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want the new model unless you really want better battery life.

      • People are seriously arguing LCD is better than OLED?

Some consider the more accurate colours of an LCD better (not as black blacks though). Though Sony know all about unnatural colours on LCD too (ie. third generation PSP)

      • +2

I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want the new model unless you really want better battery life.

        • MicroUSB port allows charging with standard cables (and allows for mobile battery pack charging).
        • 1GB internal storage better than zero.
        • Thinner body.
        • No tacky silver-painted sides.
        • Better button shape for more comfortable pressings.
        • More ergo grippyness.
        • Less weight.
        • More colour choices.
        • 1GB internal storage better than zero.

This is only useful if you never buy a memory card. 1GB is not enough. And if you insert a memory card, it disables the 1GB internal storage. So in other words, useless. Unless you can live on 1GB. But Killzone's day 1 update is already more than 1GB.

        • And if you insert a memory card, it disables the 1GB internal storage.

I heard that too. But it's a great way to get started for most users (game progress saved on the internal memory rather than looking for a memory card on Day One). There are probably many users who will never buy a memory card because of this.

      • +1

"People are seriously arguing LCD is better than OLED?"

Yes it's better for those people that don't like the garish unnatural looking colour reproduction that OLED tends towards.

        • +1

Really? For mine all things Lcd have a blue rinse type look - not unlike looking at world through pair of specs with anti-glare coating. The richer pallette of OLED is back to real colours imo. Are you sure it's not just that your colour taste buds have been dulled somewhat (or 'retrained') by exposure to Lcd's 'effect'? Red roses, the orange of a plastic wrapper on buttermenthols.. if you really stop to look at them colours in real life aren't 'softened' like they are on lcds. Although it's not the word i'd use, real colours are actually quite 'garish' (i'd go with 'vibrant' or 'alive').

      • Reports say that the new one feels more comfortable.

  • Apart from assisting GPS, what are the advantages of a 3G Vita over a normal Vita (ignoring the obvious ability to browse the internet/game anywhere)?

    • +6

      You answered your own inquiry.

      • But I thought there were limitations, for example file sizes couldn't be over 20mb? (which would make PS store useless over 3G). Also, most realtime online games don't work over 3G. (this is the results of a quick google so could just be total BS)

        source: http://au.ign.com/articles/2012/01/24/why-you-shouldnt-buy-a…

In order to regulate network strain, AT&T and Sony will only allow for basic functions to be accessed over 3G, such as web browsing, PSN messaging, asynchronous multiplayer (i.e. turn-based games) and leaderboard access

Edit: all my google searches for "can I play game X over 3G" state that the Vita just does not allow it .

        • +1

You're looking at it the wrong way, if you think 3G will be for the games/downloads. When PS4 launches with social features, the Vita will be a gateway into your friends PSN activity, messages and posts.

Also you can Party Chat over 3G on Vita whilst people on PS4/Vita are playing games. That means free 8 people chat rooms where-ever.

        • But wouldn't the free 'companion app' that's being released later this month for most smart phones achieve the same thing?

Your response really answers my question (thank you :) the only advantage is that you can use it for communicating and web browsing/youtube etc. Gameplay is not an option for what seems like 90% of games.

  • So, what goods games are there for vita? win me over.

    • +1

Well a good start will be to immediately sign up for PS+. The bonus 60 days on every yearly subscription, but it's ridiculous value if you have a PS3/Vita or even planning to buy a PS4. You get free new games and a stack of discounts every month. IIRC, it's still Uncharted and Gravity Rush Vita for free.

      • plus for Uncharted, I'd add MotorStorm RC to that as well (also a PS+ freebie now).

      • IIRC, it's still Uncharted and Gravity Rush Vita for free.

Are these also available on the US store?

    • +1

Final fantasy X HD + X-2 Definite, be seeing it decemberish in japan.

      Kingdom Hearts hopefully.

    • +3

Games I'd recommend: Dragon's Crown, Soul Sacrifice, Hotline Miami, Guacamelee, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite(This is a PSP game, but it is just simply too awesome to ignore).

Also if the PSVita's firmware is 2.61, you can buy a game which has an exploit which can enable you to play homebrew games! (This does not allow you to play pirated PSP or PSVita games).

However there are game emulators like GBA Emulators, SNES Emulators, Gameboy Color, N64.
It's slightly complicated to do, but 100% safe, as it doesn't touch any actual files that can stuff up your PSVita.

Hurry, as exploited games tend to get pulled out of PSN. If you upgrade to a higher firmware, you will be unable to use this exploit, and will have to wait for another one.

    • Super Stardust Delta, Persona 4 Golden, Escape Plan.

      • vita cant play pokemon unfortunately

        • +1

whats pokemon, never heard of it, not sure if its on ios too….

        • +2

          Neither can your 5s.

    • +2

Mate, if I paid $800+ for a device I would want it to do a helluva lot more than just SMS, phone calls and an app store. Also what use is a better GPU when you have to cover the (tiny) screen with your thumbs just to play games?

  • +1

Anyone knows how the 30 days ps plus works? Can we stack that on current subscription?

    • I don't think so. It's a 30 day trial code (same as those facebook freebie codes) they are only for accounts that have not had a PS+ subscription.

  • +2

What a great deal and another dust collector device for my bedroom that won't barely get used enough. Must resist temptation and stay strong :/

  • Does anyone know how the vita's processor (CPU and GPU) compare against modern day smartphones (e.g. Snapdragon 600)? Do they trump the Vita?

    • +2

Comparable to Iphone 4s graphically but it has a quad core cpu like the Galaxy S3.

      CPU: ARM Cortex A9 core
      (4 core)
      GPU: SGX543MP4+

Memory: Main Memory: 512 MB VRAM: 128 MB

  • My women could of used this deal i bet. Nov 2nd was my birthday, and she got me Vita with Killzone and 32gig card plus uncharted golden abyss. plus 4tb harddrive
Waiting to use it when we go to USA in december! also looking forward to cross play on PS4.

Got the PS Vita Wi-Fi with 3g Model + Killzone Mercenary deal today at JBhifi matching bigw $188
Also 8gb memory card fo $25

  • Bought one at BigW and loving it! Also ordered the 64GB memory card from PlayAsia: http://www.play-asia.com/playstation-vita-memory-card-64gb-p…

The price is really not bad at all compared to the 32GB one

    • +2

Sorry but you got ripped by about $20. Prices were cheaper at yesasia.com AU$101 delivered. You can also get a few bucks off of your first order there if you Google a coupon.
      http://www.yesasia.com/global/playstation-vita-memory-card-6…

      • Nice, will see if I can cancel PlayAsia

      • Wow, thanks, canceled PlayAsia and ordered at YesAsia, $101 is a fairly good price for a 64GB card :)

        • I paid $88 in Akihabara last month.

  • Can anyone recommend a place to get a cheap memory card? Either with decent storage, or if that's too expensive, then just enough to get by until a higher capacity card falls in price.

I heard about some software that allows you to transfer files from your memory card to PC, and back again. This could do for me, if it's cheap.

I consider a mem card to be a hidden cost for a Vita. With the 3DS it uses a standard SD card which is much cheaper.

    • I bought the 4GB second hand one at EB for $9, just to try a few games on the Vita
You can then get the 64GB one at YesAsia as mentioned by Beakeroo above… MightyApe also have the 32GB for ~$78 delivered
Go for the biggest one you can afford as the PSN+ free games tend to fill the card pretty quickly

      • +1

Coupon for US$3 off first YesAsia order NEWTWITTER3

        • Thank you beakeroo. $93 USD for a 64GB card. Probably the best $/GB available online. 32GB card, cheapest I could find was almost $80.

We've had disagreements on the state of the Vita before, but I'm invested now. I'm still not sure how long it will last considering the 3DS is trouncing it everywhere. But if nothing else, I can at least enjoy P4G, Uncharted, and any free games on PS+.

I'm going for the US PSN though, where the freebies are nowhere near as good.

    • The 8GB + 10 games bundles that are available at most stores are pretty decent value.

      eg http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107565

The games are a mix of PS Vita, PSP & PS minis, the card alone is about $25 and it just depends what you think the other games are worth.

As above, bigger is better especially if you are PS+. It's not that difficult to juggle data on and off the PS3 though, and can even be done over wifi (introduced in the latest update).

      • It's not that difficult to juggle data on and off the PS3 though, and can even be done over wifi (introduced in the latest update).

How is this done? Do you download the game onto PS3 and leave it there, and just transfer it over to Vita? How many times can you transfer from PS3 to Vita? Does it identify your Vita uniquely, and you can't transfer to a different Vita after that?

        • You can download Vita games onto the PS3, and leave them there for as long as you like. They show up under Games just like other downloaded games that haven't yet been installed. When you transfer it from the PS3 to the Vita, it is removed from the PS3. At this point you can transfer it from PS3 to Vita once.

The Vita is identified by the PlayStation account. The same account is on the PS3 and the Vita, if they do not match, it will not copy. So no, you cannot copy content downloaded via one account onto a Vita with another account. You can transfer entire games from the Vita to the PS3 if you want to swap games, and then transfer it back later. At this point you can transfer it to and fro as much as you like.

This is all done using an app on the Vita called 'Content Manager' it allows you to connect via USB or Wifi to a PS3. Once connected you can copy content such as games, saves, music etc to and from the PS3 & Vita.

I've tried to explain it simply, but the overall process is even simpler.

        • How many times can you download a game to your original PS3?

If you have 5 friends all with a Vita, can one person purchase it, and have all 5 using the same PSN account download it off the same PS3? If so, can they all download directly from PSN to Vita if you share the same account?

        • How many times can you download a game to your original PS3?

As many times as you like, you own it after all.

If you have 5 friends all with a Vita, can one person purchase it, and have all 5 using the same PSN account download it off the same PS3

No, BUT most games on the PlayStation store say something like the following (using Uncharted: GA as an example):

One time fee for use of downloads on up to 2 activated compatible Portable Console* systems.

So I believe you can use the product on two Vitas. There will probably be limitations on this though, such as both consoles cannot be logged into the Sony network at the same time? I don't know to be honest.

If so, can they all download directly from PSN to Vita if you share the same account?

There is a limit to the number of consoles an account can be activated on I think it's 2x PS3 and 2x PS Vita. So if you had only one friend you could share it with them. There are certainly benefits of sharing your account across 2 PS3's (becuase you can play the games with a different account) I think perhaps its not so beneficial across two PSV's.

        • I see. Thanks for that info.

The old system was it could be downloaded on up to 5 PS3s, so people formed unions of 5 where they'd share accounts and take turns buying the games, each getting everything.

Two is fair I guess. I hope there's an option to deactivate an account in case you change hardware.

        • There is this option. It can be made from both the system and SEN website.

  • Ordered online from Big W, and the status is now Backordered. :(

Also paid $5 for shipping, and then the next day they did free shipping for orders over $75.

Not happy jan. Now I have no idea when it will ship. I suspect it will be quite a while.

  • How do u get the ps plus trial I couldn't find anything in the box
