It says the annual fee is $450 and the supplementary card annual fee is $0.

Where does it says you get a $0 annual fee?

    • I think the OP missed that bit.

  • +1

This card most definitely does NOT have no annual fee - "$450 annual Card fee"
The $0 refers to a supplementary card "$0 annual Card fee per Supplementary Card5 so you can earn more points"

    • Doesn't make it a bad deal as such… if the free return flight is easy enough to book and you travel Perth to anywhere or reverse its actually a very good deal.

  • Damn got excited, till annual.fee 450

  • Sorry - poor reading on my part.
    Deal edited.
Perhaps should be withdrawn, unless someone thinks $450 for 50k QFF's is a deal?

    • From memory qff points are worth between .25cents each and 1cent each depending on what you want to use them on.

So this deal is $125-$500 worth of qff points for $450 annual fee and a credit card.

From memory, if you ignore the QFF store the points are worth anywhere between 1-3 cents each and possibly 4-5. To a flyer this could actually be decent, but then after the first year this card would be a PITA.

    • It is not a deal, as this offer has been around for quite a while and is the normal pricing.

  • I got a free Amex card that gave only 7K points start up, but is still 1 point per dollar spent. have a hunt around as the special offers pop up periodically.

No, I don't think it's a good deal. 6 months ago I also got 50K points on $250 annual fee card which will be cancelled when 12 months up.

There's one on line at the moment that incl a free flight. It's particularly useful for people departing from Perth. Annual fee 195 plus 10K points:

    • That card is $99 if you are a member of IEaust.

  • Could still be reasonable value, depending how you spend the points.
Presumably you and a partner could get a card each, meet the spend requirements and each bag 50,000 points. Used in one hit, that is enough for an upgrade to Biz Class on, say, a Syd-LAX flight. Currently the fare is about $1k in Economy and $10k Biz.

    • I haven't read the T&C, but I'd have assumed the bonus points apply only to the first card, not both individually.

  • This is not a deal, it's the standard signup bonus for this AMEX and has existed for years. You should also mention that you get a free domestic economy class return flight with Qantas (between certain capital cities http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/ultimatef…?).

    • Yeah - just got excited when I saw 50k points.
Teach me to read the T's & C's properly - an object lesson in Ozbargaining.

If you're looking purely at the sign up bonus, there's better value out there:

Earn 40,000 points with Macquarie Visa Platinum Card. Reduced annual Card fee of $99 for the first year

Earn 40,000 points with ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum credit card. Total annual fee of $295

Earn 35,000 points with HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card. Annual fee of $199

    • Agreed. The Macquarie Visa Platinum has the best value sign up points.

I'm just throwing this idea out there, but if I had $450, I wouldn't need a Credit Card. lol

    • +1

Just throwing it out there, I'd rather the $450 in my pocket/bank to spend on what I want.

  • ALso worth noting the T&Cs say its for new Amex cardholders only.

  • Can't you just cancel the card before the annual fee anyways?

    • Nope, unless the first year is free which this one doesn't have.
Annual fee is charged as soon as you activate the card.

  • +1

Paying $450 annual fee is against the Ozbargain spirit.

450 bucks wow, I'm a bit stress out with my amex that charges me $145 :)

    No thanks.
