Limit of five gift cards per Flybuys account For anyone that didn’t click the FreePoints link.

  • Prefer the Coles Mastercard offer with 2000 Flybuys that we saw a few weeks ago. Vanilla cards can't be used on half the websites and in person use requires a signature due to not being 3D verified.

    • Agreed, and the Mastercard offer was more generous, but this is still better than what Woolworths have offered all year on Prepaid gift cards.

    • +6

in person use requires a signature

I am not so sure that is still a requirement anymore.

About a week ago, I noticed that Coles (and Woolworths) replaced their (Vanilla) Visa gift cards with a newer version that now expires in 2030. I bought a couple of these from Coles and noticed there are a number of changes, including:

      • The balance check website and support number is the same as Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards.

      • The Cardholder Agreement now includes references to setting your own PIN (basically the same as Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards). I can also see the option to (re)set a PIN on the balance check website.

Of course, if the Coles store(s) in your area are still selling Vanilla Visa gift cards with 2029 expiry or earlier, signature verification is still the only option for verifying a transaction in-person.

      • +1

That's good to know, turns a bit embarrassing when paying with these in person and the transaction needs a signature.

      • +1

        I read 2030 as if it's 10+ years away

  • First time I've noticed a Coles offer for Visa Vanilla cards. Usually it's 2000 points for the Mastercards.

I wonder how many people will buy the wrong card and be upset.

Usual question: are these cards ATO friendly?

    • Vanilla cards arent ATO friendly

    • +4

I used a Vanilla Visa gift card with 2030 expiry (i.e. the new version) a couple of days ago at the ATO. I assume it still works.

However, it looks like PayPal is currently blocked, as my attempt to link a gift card to PayPal was declined by InComm (the gift card scheme owner) due to "security policy". I made sure I correctly entered the card details…

      • Have you tried another Paypal account? I havent tried the new VV cards yet but with VM/CM cards, Paypal now seems to restrict how many cards you can add over a period of time, a bit like Shopback.

    • Didn’t work on ATO about a year ago for me.

  • -1

Just a reminder that if you get/use Coles spend $xx offers, these gift card purchases will significantly increase (aka ruin) your spend amount.

    • Not in my case.
Last promo I bought $500 worth gift cards for two different accounts, didn't affect it at all.

    • +3

I load up on $500 worth of cards every time and my Flybuys 4x spending offers are always $50.

It did ruin the offers years ago, but Coles/FlyBuys appear to have fixed it.

      • Good to hear that, just dont want to ruin the family accounts for little gain 😀. If there is more commentary like yours will give it a go on one account, but hardly worth it for $1.50 profit

        • I have spent on average $500 on gift cards at Coles each week so far this year and scanned my Flybuys card every time, and the minimum spend for my four-week Coles/Flybuys offers has been either $50 or $60. The increase to $60 for one offer coincided with me actually doing larger weekly grocery shops in the weeks leading up to that offer, so I am sceptical that gift cards these days influence the minimum spend for those offers.

    • +1

Nah it doesn't, or at least hasn't for me. I buy 1250 worth everytime Coles Master card offer comes up and my last 4 weeks offer was at $60pw

  • +4

so, 0% discount on $250 GC, and 1.46% discount on $100 GC. Maximum $7.75 profit per Flybuys account

  • +1

$1.55 profit, and maybe they're hacked? Hmm

    • +1

1.55% really doesn't seem worth it. I've used well over 60 similar gift cards and never had a problem with hacking, but the reward seems too small especially if they don't work with the ATO.

  • +2

I will ask the staff to cut all the cards open before I make payment on these.

Last time I bought these and opened at home, 4 digits and CVV were scratched off. Took me 5 months and complaining to AFCA to get my replacement cards sent.

    • +2

still luckier than mine, waited 6months got replacement but one of them had no value. now long waiting procedure again after called today

      • F*&^ !! That must be such a pain

  • +12
    • I didn’t neg you. But would I would say is, whilst I agree with your reasoning, we have to appreciate what Coles and Woolies will offer us. They’ve had some shockers this year, which I have personally downvoted, but given you do have the option to break even on this one, I figured it was worth a post. Again, I’m not saying I want this be the new norm, but in terms of what’s been offered to us this year, this is certainly a better offer.

      • +4

whilst I agree with your reasoning

        Thanks :)

we have to appreciate what Coles and Woolies will offer us

        I don't.
This deal is only offering 1.55% off in the form of flybuys points. It's not instant savings.
On the other hand, we can always get much better discount in Coles/ OW/ Kmart/ Bunnings gift card.
We are actually worse off if we take this deal.
We need to stop encouraging people buying from this shit deals.
Otherwise, Coles/WW will never offer good deals, when they find shit deals can attract great demand.

        • I wouldn’t say Coles and Woolworths exactly know what they’re doing when it comes to picking a promotion each week, at least not Woolworths, anyway. They’ve ran the same BS offer of 10x EDR points on Eftpos cards but excluding variable loads, more times than I can count on one hand over several months.

        • +1

gee, you make it sound like they are a business trying to make a profit!

      • +1

we have to appreciate what Coles and Woolies will offer us

I'm pretty sure coles/woolies are making money on all these promos - 10% off included. We're doing them a favour, not the other way around.

    • +1

too many people hand in the pie

  • I think you can sweeten the deal by paying with category choice groceries gift card for 3% off at Amazon ATM?

    • Yeah absolutely.

      • Would like to see if this is really possible when you purchase the cards using category choice grocery.

        • Yes, I was able to pay with my Category Choice card today.

  • +5

This vanilla giftcard cannot pay Deft and Ato

  • Lukewarm deal for most circumstances, but thanks for posting all the same.

  • Does anyone know if these work with Sniip?

    • I am not sure.

I tried using one (with 2029 expiry) a couple of months ago and it was declined by InComm. I was able to link to my Sniip wallet, but when I attempted payment, I got an error message. l called InComm and was told it was a Do Not Honour error, but the rep was extremely unhelpful when I asked why that error happened.

I have not tried with the new (2030) version yet, so I do not know what the go is with that.

      • +1

From what you said so far the new version seems more like a rebranded VM card, so it probably works on Sniip.

      • +2

        Update: It works!

        • Good to know! I've been buying the 2030 cards exclusively after reading what @WookieMonster said. The old VV is a pure pita.

  • Can either the visa vanilla or mastercard be used online for transactions in foreign currencies?

    • +1

Just saw on the sleeve of mastercard, it said 2.5% foreign currency transaction fee

      • Thx for the info :)

  • +3

They could have given 2000 bonus points. Wtf deal. It would be for the better if everyone boycott.. otherwise next time they'll do 1200 or 850 points

  • 3% (from choice gift card) + 1.5% + credit card points (buying choice gift card) = 5% disc for paying ATO

  • is this different with Visa for you, visa thank you, visa happy birthday etc?

    • +2

The only gift cards eligible for this deal are the $100 and $250 Visa gift cards using the FOR YOU branding on the front of the gift card packaging, and these are pictured in the Coles catalogue. The other types of Visa gift cards sold at Coles (Thank You, Happy Birthday) are excluded from this deal.

The reason the deal title says previously said Vanilla Visa (and the product tag used for this deal is Vanilla Visa) is due to the confusing way InComm (the gift card product owner) brands their Visa gift cards.

      • The FOR YOU Visa gift cards at Coles previously used the Vanilla Visa branding, but that was removed over a year ago. However, FOR YOU Visa gift cards with 2029 (or earlier) expiry to use the same BIN (bank identification number) and balance check website as Vanilla Visa gift cards still being sold at other merchants (e.g. Shell Reddy Express). The FOR YOU Visa gift cards with 2030 expiry I purchased over the last two weeks at Coles have changed this, so you could argue it is strictly speaking a new product…

      • On a Coles receipt, the FOR YOU Visa gift card is called Visa <denomination> GC 1EACH, but the Coles app continues to call it Vanilla Visa <denomination> Gift Card.

      It is a mess.

  • Never thought it would happen to me but the ones I bought today were tampered with.

Those who have had to go through this process with Coles before, do you have any tips on how to get my money back?

    • +1

Contact the supplier of the gift card (not Coles) ASAP to block the cards, and they can issue you another card if the balance hasn't been used. You would need to provide receipt of purchase, picture of gift cards, and the packaging. I think there is a code on the package that the supplier of gift card can look up the card details.

    • -1

How badly/carefully is the tampered area? Sometimes you can still make out the details if only the printed digits gets scratched off but the base is intact.

Feel free to upload a photo so we can see if it is recoverable.

    • Same here- bought one today and 4 digits of the card had been erased/scratched off; and the CVV code at the back entirely wiped out too!

First time this has happened to me- will be bringing back to Coles tomorrow for a refund!

      • For the front of the card, is it just the digits get scratched off or the base coat is also scratched? That is do you see the white plastic underneath?

        • Base coat scratched exposing the white layer underneath, same with the CVV code behind.

The tampering is getting pretty rampant- will be avoiding buying these cards for a while!

          • @Craze: Too bad, you won't be able to recover the digits if the base coat is also scratches. Call the hotline asap tomorrow then and they can block the card with the barcode numbers.

      • can you list the store so we know to avoid?

        • +2

This was at Knox store- I went back this morning for a refund but was told to call Coles hotline to lodge a case instead…

  • +3

    Card was accepted by ATO.

    • And a bonus that they no longer charge the 0.2% debit card processing fee.

  • It works with ATO

  • I have sadly fallen victim to the tampering too. All 3 $100 cards purchased today (expiry 7/29) has had the last 4 digits scratched off. Went back to the store and advised to call Coles Customer Care.

I am thinking given this is a Vanilla card that works using signature authorisation for in-store purchases; would it be worth trying to go to a physical store and using the entire $100 for an in-store purchase. Has anyone who has fallen victim to this tampering tried that and has it worked?

    • +1

No need to try, I can guarantee you they have damaged the magstrips, which is easily done with a quick swipe of a neodymium magnet.

Just call Incomm immediately to block and replace the cards.

  • @timedzone. Thanks for your reply. Thats not good, i think your right that they would destroy the magnetic strip also. Do you know whether you get a replacement or a full refund and how long it takes

    • +1

No idea, I haven't got a tampered card for a long time being extra careful with them. It used to be an immediate replacement over the phone if the cards were successfully blocked with the funds intact. I am not sure about it now.
You still haven't called them? If the scammers manage to use up the funds it will be a lot more difficult to get your money back (you should still be able to though) That's why said call them right away.

      • Thank u @timedzone. Yes I called Coles Customer service (not incomm) within 1-2 hrs of purchasing the tampered cards. i believe they would communicate with incomm? This is very stressful especially at time where money is very scarce. Just hoping they are able to get the money back and not having to wait months

        • +1

I would recommend calling Incomm directly yourself as they can block the cards straightaway over the phone. They will be able to replace the card without further complications.

  • Bought at Wed lunchtime. Standard points posted last night but no sign of bonus points yet….

  • Wondering if everyone flybuys are with the bonus point? I have one card (on Wednesday) bonus points credited but another 4 cards (on Thursday) bonus points not credited but only the standard points.

    • +1

I bought two gift cards on Wednesday morning and two more at a different store on Wednesday evening, and I received the standard + bonus points yesterday afternoon.

I bought another gift card yesterday morning and the standard + bonus points arrived were credited this afternoon.

I reckon you will need to wait until around 4:30pm Sydney/Melbourne time tomorrow for the bonus points for the four gift cards you purchased on Thursday to be credited to your account.

      • Standard points do show up now but not the bonus points…lets see tomorrow 430pm will do the magic.

  • +1

Not sure if people are wary purchasing these cards, but noticed no shortage of availability in store this time round.

    • Due to limited 5 cards per account, not much profit and fraud risks.

  • Does anyone have an issue with checking the balance online with these cards? Every time I try, it tells me a 'system error has occured'. Is there some trick to it?

    • I get the error if I use any device connected to my home wifi.

If I use mobile data on my phone then it works.

      • true they would flag IP if checked too often or even typed wrong number just once.

  • I bought 5x $100 visa gift cards yesterday at coles and got the standard points in flybuys app today, but didn't get the bonus points. Did people receive their bonus points same time as the standard points?

    • I received both my standard and bonus points the day following buying the gift cards. And on two separate occasions as I bought 3 cards on day one and another 2 cards yesterday.

Were you sure you bought the ones with "FOR YOU" branding on the packaging? Either the blue $100 or the green $250?

      • Yeah i bought blue the for you ones, would i need to contact flybuys directly or coles customer service.

        • I couldn't say definitively as I have not had to chase points yet thankfully. But if I do in the future, I would try Flybuys directly first.

    • I bought additional 4 on Thursdays along with 1 on Wednesday. Additional's regular points are now in but yet for bonus points.

      • Purchased on 25, still waiting for bonus points

        • Same here!

          • +1

            @mameimo: Same here.

I contacted chat yesterday and they said 5-7 Business days.

  • What can this card used for? Tried to pay utilities but rejected, tried to pay pizza hut online but rejected. Etc etc.
Does this card mostly only work on physical shops with swipe machine?

    • +4

The Visa gift cards in this deal can be used at merchants that choose to accept prepaid Visa gift cards as a payment method.1

A lot of online merchants will use Visa Secure2 to verify Visa transactions on their website where a Visa card is entered into the debit/credit card field on their website. Visa Secure will reject any prepaid Visa gift cards, due to prepaid Visa gift cards being unable to support Visa Secure.3

Were you trying to pay your utilities bill directly with the utilities company or via a third-party payment platform? If it was directly, my suggestion is to try to use a third-party payment platform if you can (e.g. Post Billpay online or via the AusPost app), although it will then depend on whether that third-party payment platform allows payments from prepaid Visa gift cards. Another suggestion (and this currently only applies if you have a Visa gift card expiring in 2029 or earlier) is to link the Visa gift card to a PayPal account, then use PayPal at checkout.4

Pizza Hut online appears to use Visa Secure, which would explain your Visa gift card was rejected. If you used your Visa gift card via PayPal (assuming it expires in 2029 or earlier), it should have worked.

You may have a much easier time using your Visa gift card in-person, as long as the merchant has an EFTPOS terminal with a magstripe (swipe) reader. However, whether you actually have an easier time in-person will depend on the version of the Visa gift card you have:

      • If your Visa gift card expires in 2029 or earlier, it will only support signature verification for in-person transactions. If you attempt PIN verification, your transaction will be declined. I find signature verification is usually okay at larger businesses, but I find it very hit-or-miss with a lot of smaller businesses.

      • If your Visa gift card expires in 2030 or later, it will support PIN verification (where you can choose your own PIN). The easiest way to set a PIN is by entering a four-digit number of your choice the first time you are asked for a PIN at an EFTPOS terminal.

      1. There are a small number of transaction types not supported on these Visa gift cards, including payments at automated fuel dispensers (e.g. Costco service stations, U-GO service stations, unattended United service stations) and transactions where you obtain cash.

      2. Visa Secure is Visa’s implementation of 3-D Secure, which allows merchants to reduce their exposure to fraud on their websites by allowing verification of the cardholder (usually via a one-time password sent to a mobile number) before processing a transaction.

      3. Mastercard’s implementation of 3-D Secure - Mastercard Identity Check - is usually not as strict as Visa Secure at weeding out prepaid gift cards, so prepaid Mastercard gift cards work at a lot (but not all) of the same merchants that reject prepaid Visa gift cards.

      4. InComm - the gift card scheme owner - has blocked PayPal transactions on the Visa gift cards in this deal expiring in 2030 or later, due to their “security policy” (whatever that means).
