Your gift card balance can't be applied to orders that contain other Amazon.com.au gift cards.

  • great

  • Do these cards work like as standard VISA card or is there some hoops to jump through?

    • +5

The Uber / Uber Eats gift cards are your typical merchant-specific gift cards (i.e. they are restricted to Uber and Uber Eats only).

The Category Choice gift cards are prepaid Visa gift cards that are restricted to merchants using one of a number of merchant category codes (MCCs) - and the deal description contains the officially permitted MCCs listed on the Category Choice website. When you purchase one of these gift cards, you will receive a Visa card number, expiry date, CVV2 and PIN: you can use these details to the gift card to a supported mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet)1 or use them online.2

      1. You will occasionally see comments where some people are having issues adding a Category Choice gift card to a mobile wallet, particularly Apple Pay. This is usually due to fraud controls on Blackhawk Network's end (as the gift card scheme operator), on the Visa network or from the mobile wallet operator. Apple Pay seems to be the most persistent out of the three mobile wallet operators in terms of applying fraud control.

      2. Some online merchants will choose to reject prepaid Visa gift cards, because prepaid Visa gift cards do not support 3-D Secure, which makes them more risky for a merchant to accept. An example is the Coles website, which will reject Category Choice Groceries gift cards if you are attempting to pay for a grocery order online.

@WookieMonster Thanks mate for the detailed response

  • Just find it now allows Zip payment, previously not for giftcard. Much better than the same offers within Zip.

  • I was able to add this to my Google Wallet, but unable to add to my wife's wallet (Google Wallet). I even tried on my kid's phone (Apple Pay) and it just does not add to these. Is it just a matter of waiting a few days and trying again or do I need to contact Blackhawk to get it fixed? (Note - I have tried this earlier and it did work)

    • strangely enough since the deal is still ongoing, I bought another Grocery choice gc and added it first to my wife's phone (success), but then trying to add to my phone failed…wonder if there is some limitation in terms of this being on multiple phones at the same time

note - I tried Category Choice Fuel GC which was already on my phone and it got loaded onto my wife's phone successuflly….

@WookieMonster - would you happen to know why it behaves this way?

I also logged a case with BHN for the first gift card that wasn't loading on my wife's phone just in case they have to do something on the backend

      • +1

I ran into the same issue a couple of weeks ago when trying to add a Category Choice Groceries gift card onto a second phone (Apple Pay). I got the error message after accepting the Blackhawk Network terms and conditions, so it looks like Blackhawk Network themselves are applying a security policy where that gift card cannot be added to multiple devices.

Category Choice Groceries gift cards are probably more popular than Category Choice Fuel gift cards (because you are more likely going to regularly spend heaps of money at a supermarket when compared with a service station or car mechanic, especially since a lot of gift card deals happen at supermarkets), which means Blackhawk Network feel the need to deploy that security policy on Category Choice Groceries gift cards, not Category Choice Fuel gift cards.

I wonder what Blackhawk Network has to say about this though…

        • +1

Makes sense but the issue is I don't want to remove it from my wallet to try it on my wife's wallet because if that doesn't work and if I cannot add back to my wallet, then I'm pretty much stuck with sorting this out with Blackhawk which id rather not spend time doing

          • @zooter: i went ahead and boldly did some tests and was able to remove the card from my phone and add it to my wife…and vice versa, the card on my phone was removed from there and added to my phone…so looks like there is a new restriction on this card…maybe the wiki here in OZB should be updated

            @WookieMonster

  • Wanting to purchase these to use at Aldi for the 10% Ultimate gift cards. Has anyone tried it there before?

    • +2

I have used a Category Choice Groceries gift card to purchase gift cards at ALDI in the past.

However, keep in mind the following:

      • You will incur the 0.5% Visa/Mastercard surcharge when using a Category Choice Groceries gift card at ALDI, because the gift card only supports Visa (and ALDI surcharges all payments routed through Visa). For example, if you purchase a multipack Ultimate Kids gift card, you will need to pay $90 + the applicable surcharge ($0.45). If you are wanting to get a Category Choice Groceries gift card to exactly cover the amount you want to spend at ALDI, remember to factor this in.

      • The only type of split payments you can do when purchasing a gift card at ALDI is cash + one card (and it needs to be in that order). In other words, it is not possible to split payments across two Category Choice Groceries gift cards (or one Category Choice Groceries gift card and a debit/credit card).

      • Just read through the terms and conditions of the gift card, and it says it’s to not be used to purchase other gift cards. Is this recent? Or they haven’t blocked this yet?

        • +1

That clause has been in the terms and conditions since the Category Choice gift cards were first introduced (last year, I think?).

Blackhawk Network - the gift card scheme owner - cannot see what are you trying to purchase, but it can see where you are trying to attempt to make a purchase. That means the only way they themselves can stop you from using a Category Choice gift card to purchase a gift card is to block purchases at merchants known to primarily sell gift cards. For example, ShopBack is assigned MCC 5311 (Department Stores) for a lot of the gift cards sold on the ShopBack gift card store, and MCC 5311 is permitted on the Category Choice Department Store gift card. However, Blackhawk Network has blocked ShopBack as a merchant on that gift card, because they know that any transactions at ShopBack would almost always be for the purchase of gift cards. On the other hand, when you attempt a transaction at ALDI, all Blackhawk Network can see is that you are attempting a purchase at ALDI (which should be assigned MCC 5411 - Grocery Stores, Supermarkets); Blackhawk Network cannot tell whether you are purchasing a gift card, groceries or a BBQ from the Special Buys section.

Additionally, Blackhawk Network may work with a merchant to get them to block Category Choice gift cards as a payment method for (some) gift cards. That means the merchant is enforcing the restriction, not Blackhawk Network themselves. For example:

          • Woolworths: you can use a Category Choice Groceries gift card to purchase most gift cards sold in-store at Woolworths and Woolworths Metro (e.g. Ultimate gift cards, Apple gift cards, Uber gift cards). However, if you attempt to use one to purchase some gift cards (e.g. Everyday WISH gift cards, eBay gift cards, Vanilla Mastercard gift cards, Westfield eftpos gift cards), you will trigger a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error at the checkout. This error is triggered by Woolworths themselves, not Blackhawk Network.

          • EG Ampol: if you attempt to use a Category Choice Fuel gift card to purchase any gift card in-store (e.g. WISH gift cards, Amazon gift cards), you will trigger a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error at the checkout. This error is triggered by EG Ampol themselves, not Blackhawk Network.

I have never seen ALDI implement such restrictions into their checkouts and have never seen anyone here run into such restrictions at ALDI, which is the reason I think you will be fine there.

  • Just bought 2 cards each $500. I manage to activate and add the first one into my apple wallet but second one doesn't go through. error message: "your issuer doesn't yet offer support for this card". Does anybody have any idea? first card added to my wallet with no issues. Money is already deducted from my account for both cards when purchased from Amazon.

    • +2

You can only add one category choice groceries a day on a device (iPhone and Apple Watch, one each per day)

      • that's a new restriction

      • Very annoying… Any idea if there is a way to combine the gift cards into one or any way around this restriction?

        • Did you want to buy tcn kids at Woolies or ultimate at coles/aldi? You can just keep adding them now and buy later this week

          • @RTY: Yeah was looking to buy TCN, but the 20x promo only available till tomorrow. Just bought one, removed the used choice card from wallet, tried to add the second one and wasn’t able to do it. Would be interesting to see if there is a way around this restriction

      • Glad you posted this tidbit - was facing the same issue.

      • Tried the second one today, still getting same error as yesterday

        • @WookieMonster any idea what the issue might be?

        • +1

          Try maybe a 24hour gap

  • Damn cannot use amazon credit (from refund) to buy this…

  • @WookieMonster

    Hi,

Via the posted deals - I’m intending to purchase TCN Deluxe for a large purchase (or the BCF card from Coles) and a couple of Nintendo eshop cards

Will this 3% Visa card under ‘grocery’ category work for both Woolies & Coles for the said card purchases?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Category-Choice-Groceries-eGift-De…

    Thanks in advance

    • +1

It should work at Coles and Woolworths for those gift card purchases, unless Coles or Woolworths have changed something within their checkouts today.

      Keep in mind:

      • Woolworths' checkouts will allow split payments when purchasing a gift card.

      • Coles' self-checkouts will allow only split payments when purchasing gift cards if you pay in cash first (and you need to put in the exact amount you want to spend), then pay the remaining amount owed using one card. If you attempt split payments, you will trigger an error message. I am not sure whether Coles' standard checkouts - i.e. the ones operated by a dedicated staff member where the checkout person packs your groceries for you, or the service desk - these days allow split payments when purchasing a gift card.

      • +1

Does that mean I should not buy the Visa card with the exact amount I’m intending to purchase? MUST it be a split payment between this visa and let’s say a proper bank debit card?

        Thanks mate
        Heading to my local Coles
