I see. Thx for the explanation. Sounds a lot more troublesome than coles prepaid mastercard.

        • Yes it's a PITA. Don't see an option to overpay QLD rego, don't have an ATO bill to pay, and my utilities is already way overpaid from the TCN Mastercard fiasco from Qantas Marketplace earlier in the year.

I ended up swapping these to Amazon gift cards, adding to Uber, and adding PAYG to Aldi Mobile (which can be used to recharge plans)

      • Sharing one data point.

Tried to pay strata today at Post in person using this visa pre-paid card (expires in 2030 or later), but no luck.
Swap the card, and then select 'Saving' (another option is 'Cheque'), then require PIN, and enter random PIN, and then got declined.

6 months ago, I paid the same bill with similar cards successfully. From my memory, there was one more option 'Credit Card', select it, and then verify signature, and done.

Was that a DEFT bill? If so, that would not have worked today, because the DEFT website says you can pay at Australia Post via eftpos or cheque (and there is no other mention of any other accepted payment methods).

eftpos in all lowercase letters refers to the eftpos card network (where you choose between Savings or Cheque). All Vanilla Visa gift cards do not support the eftpos network, so you essentially tried to route a payment through an unsupported network, which is the reason the transaction was then declined. The option you needed was Credit, which would have routed the payment through the applicable credit network on your card, if supported (which in this case is Visa).

If the biller was not DEFT, it would then depend on two factors:

          • Whether the biller accepts Visa payments from in-person payments at Australia Post. Not all billers accept them, and another prominent example of this is the ATO.

          • Whether the staff member chose the correct card option on their screen. I had a chat with an Australia Post staff member recently, who said that some billers allow them to select card on their screen and Visa/Mastercard/eftpos payments will work, but some other billers require them to choose Visa, Mastercard or eftpos on their screen before you scan swipe/insert/tap the corresponding card. On a different Australia Post visit, I said card and a different staff member choose eftpos on their screen, so when I tapped a Visa-only card, the EFTPOS terminal immediately rejected my card.

@WookieMonster: Thanks heaps for the detailed explanation :pray Learned something today.

Checked the Post receipt (ended up paying with eftpos and bank card), and it shows DEFT payment. All make sense to me.

The previous working Post receipt is also DEFT payment, and I guess during that time, DEFT accepts Visa/Mastercard.

  • These don't seem to work with the new portal for child support payments?

  • @WookieMonster Do these also have a 30-minute waiting period before they can be fully redeemed, like regular Vanilla Visa gift cards? Thank you. 🙂

The Visa gift cards from this deal with 2030 expiry appear to not have the 30 minute waiting period. I used the full balance of one gift card the ATO two minutes after purchase last week and had no issues.

The Visa gift cards from this deal with 2029 (or earlier) expiry appear to still have the 30 minute waiting period.

Got that. Thank you, Wookie! 😊

      • Have you tried using these to purchase gift cards at HCF Thank You? Planning to purchase some of these tonight with Category Choice Groceries (currently 4% off) to then buy more with these Visa cards before the 4% offer ends on 8 Oct.

I last used one of these Visa gift cards with 2029 expiry about a month ago and it worked.

I used one of these Visa gift cards with 2030 expiry a few days ago and it worked.

        • I just used today no prob

  • I purchased 5 vanilla visa card, which balance checked at 'mybalancenow' instead of 'vanillabalance'.

The cards worked but I did not receive the points.

They looked the same from the packing

    • I haven’t gotten my points either. I might call flybuys next week if the points don’t come through.

      • just arrived on mine
