    • Finally put thru the order using Google Chrome.
      Nice finding

  • thanks, just about time I need one, those sold at supermarkets are so crap, can't even stick…

  • Looks interesting, will try out for a set..thanks.

  • -2

      • +1

        Thanks it worked…

  • +7

free, but they are so pretentious i felt compelled NOT to order one

    • -1

yea they are pretty crap but I rarely say no to a freebie =]

  • +7

Probably not legal, i can see an angry nsw cop fining me for some silly reason.

  • +9

Am I the only one who thinks the designs are so terrible? I didn't get one eventhough it was free

  • -2

LOL. I reckon a Green P with a white background is a "Hotter Plate" ;)

Each to their own though I guess.

  • +2

    Is this even legal???

    I highly doubt it!

  • +2

    Illegal, sorry guys!

You might be able to get away with it, but since the plates don't comply with transport department standards…is it really a good look copping a 'didn't display plates' fine on your l's or p's?

  • +1

just ordered a few but then realised you'll probably get fined for having illegal L / P plates.

  • +6

These plates do not comply with the Road Safety Act and therefore leave you open to a fine and 3 demerit points if you display them on your vehicle. Is it worth it?

    • +3

Agreed. There was a crackdown on illegal L P Plates last year, those stupid splat designs. IRC it was 3 demerits points as you mentioned. Akin to not displaying a plate at all.

      • +4

It's actually worse than displaying nothing. Displaying a non-compliance plate is asking for trouble.

    • +3

      +1 for -1

  • +3

Yes. Not a bargain when you consider the fine and points.

  • +5

Seems pretty irresponsible of the student mag to assist in giving these away so that people can break the law.

  • I'm not voting negative because its a freebie, and you DONT have to display them on your car. Could use them for other purposes.

    • +7

I was of the same view until I saw that the website was explicitly recommending them for use on vehicles.

      • +2

        agreed

  • +3

Gives the cops an excuse to pull you over.

Way to go drawing attention to yourself and copping a fine for this (and maybe then some other 'illegal' mod too).

    They look stupid anyway.

  • +5

They look crap, I would never display those on my car!

  • +2

"L" & "P" plates are of a standard and are to be displayed for a reason!
As with all road laws, they exist to reinforce common sense and minimize risk.
Road use is a privilege that that comes with RESPONSIBILITIES so that the rest of us poor sods have a half-decent chance of getting home alive…

    NEGATIVE

    • -2

sorry, teaearlgrey, but i really don't understand how is your comment related to this post. how will these L and P plates be different to the normal ones in terms of "reinforcing common sense and minimize risk"? how will normal plates achieve this anyway?

  • +3

Bad product. In fact we should negative vote this deal so no-on can see. (ie. more negative votes than positive votes)

  • +1

While any freebie is a good deal, it's not legal to use so…
Could be good for a prop or decoration >_>
Not good for what it's advertised for anyway…

  • +3

    ILLEGAL

  • Pretty stupid really, illegal and looks terrible.

  • -3

if everybody is saying it's illegal, can someone point me to a section of the Act where it is specifically mentioned that L or P plates with a drawing in the background are illegal? if such a section exists, mods should remove this post.

    • what did ozbargain turn into? what's wrong with this comment that got 3 negative votes?

  • -2

hmm how can i cancel my order lol

  • +2

Forrest, I don't have a copy of the Road Rules at home with me, but the definition of a 'P' plate in Victoria is a plae which is 205mm x 205mm in size and conspiculously displays the letter 'P' on a red or green background (Depending if it relates to either a P1 or P2 licence holder). A plate with a picture on it does NOT fall into this definition and therefore it is not a 'P' plate and the offence is 'Fail to display 'P' plates'. A fine and 3 demerit points. Same definition for a 'L' plate except it is a black letter L on a Yellow background. A picture fails to make it a color background. Why do we need to change this and make them more 'fancy' when the idea is to allow all other road users to clearly see the inexperience and ability of a new driver on the roads and make the necessary compensations for them if necessary. The law isn't there just to make the Probationary driver or Learner driver perform an act for the sack for it!!! Think about it, driving isn't a carefree activity that doesn't matter if we get wrong. People die on the roads in multiple numbers everyday in Australia. It's time that we all took it serious and followed the Rules and Regulations set out for all of us to follow to make it a safer environment on the Road for ALL of us. No twisting and bending of the rules, just plain and simple by the book. It's not that hard really. Except some responsibilities in life!!!

PS It funny how this offer is for the catergory of drivers which represent 65+% of all motor vehicle collisions!!! Go figure!!!

    • -1

i still don't know how did you come to the conclusion that the drawing on those plates make them invalid? instead, you preach the same mambo-jumbo about following the rules…if only the diplay of plates will deem everyone good drivers…

  • +2

I just ordered 1 so it would cost em money to produce and ship out to me :) i dont think this company will be around very long…might be a collectors item?

  • +4

"HOTPL8s has spent years carefully researching, designing and patenting their latest innovation that combines increased safety with great designs." that information implies they are aware of the legal risks to themselves and the buyers, (albeit here the recipients are not paying).

the laws regarding this may be dubious at best, but it's another guarantee of baiting the cops if they see you with one, it will provoke more unwanted interest in your car than you expect.

in any case the DESIGNS which have taken years, look utterly disappointing — they might have borrowed some useable designs if a graphic designer was too expensive — the 3 designs they are offering are only going to appeal to ten year old children.

    FAIL.

  • Are we ASSUMING things ? Why don't just email VicRoads or whoever has authority and ask?

To Tigerman: What background does ozbargain have? White? Nah can't be, cos there are texts and pictures and stuff everywhere, it doens't have a background :)

    • +1

      http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/gettingalicence/200707_p…
"Display of P plates – P plates (red P on white background) must be clearly displayed on the front and back of the outside of the vehicle. The letter P on the plate must not be hidden. "
      http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/gettingalicence/200707_r…
"#Changes to the display of L and P plates on vehicles.
L or P plates may no longer be displayed from inside your vehicle. All learner and provisional drivers must clearly display their L and P plates on the front and back of the outside of the vehicle. The letters L and P on the plate must not be hidden. The penalty for incorrectly displayed plates is two demerit points and a fine."

a cop could easily argue that the plate was obscured by writing on the sign,

      • +1

        (cont from above)

        http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Licensing/Driver_licenc…
This shows exactly what needs to be displayed on the car (which is not a novelty plate).
"The holder of a class C (car) P1 licence must clearly display red P-plates (PDF**, 20KB) on their car."

See it actually has an example of what MUST be clearly displayed.

        • +1

Hmm it does only say the letter P must not be obscured. Looks like the makers of those have been reading up too. Still, I wouldn't use these due to their sucky design, and the extra attention it would draw by police.

      • -1

The P or L on those novelty plate is not hidden. They must have eyes problem, I can see it clearly.

And nothing on those rules say anything about picture can't be in the background either. Must check with the authority haha

        • yeah, thought it's not that you can see it, it's that every other downer can see it when on the road. Take for example the rules about putting lights/neons in your car etc. The nsw rules say that it must not be distracting to other drivers. The police are still able to hand out plenty of fines, though they probably are not personally distracted by it. At the end of the day, it's a cheap piece of junk that provides unwanted attention by the police, something i'd probably want to pass on.

          • @Davo1111: i respect your opinion about the crappy design, davo1111, but to say it's illegal (when is not), to say it obstructs other drivers from seeing it (only if their are blind) and to say that without clear plates, everyone will die, is just unbelievable.

            • @forrest: i've seen people get fined for hanging one of those cardboard 'air fresheners' from the rear vision mirror because it is distracting to the driver…. common sense doesn't run with nsw police

          • @Davo1111: Once again, you are talking about fines and stuff but can not point out where did they say that( i.e. your plate must have PLAIN color background, no drawing, nothing else except the letter L or P and the PLAIN background).

Please cut the police thing off if you can't 100% confirm those plates are illegal. Cheers

            • @alo1234: whatever dude, people will make their own mind up whether they are illegal or not. I'm giving my interpretation of the law, which may or may not be the opinion of the police. If you're willing to risk 3 demerit points on a "free" piece of cardboard then goodluck with that.

    1. The design is crap. It's my opinion but it's seriously bad. I can draw something better than that, and I'm really bad at drawing stuff.

    2. I don't know whether it's illegal or not. But I can understand that it will certainly have the potential to attract unwanted attentions from the cops. It's like having a very dirty number plate, you'll be fine in most cases but some cop who's having a bad day will stop and fine you.

    3. What they should have done is to have the standard L and P plates, but with novelty borders around it.

  • Boy you guys really get worked up about trivial things. 60 comments and no-one has 30 seconds to ring a police station and ask a simple question.

    • -1

I've emailed VicRoads, but I don't want to ring up 000 to ask them this question lol. Why don't you?

      • +1

000 isnt a police station… By him saying ring a police station, it means ring the local station on its normal xxxx xxxx non-emergency number

  • No deal.

  • +2

    official response from VicRoads:

"Thank you for your request, unfortunately the P Plates do not meet the standards and should not be used. This advice is based on the regs. which require a red, green or yellow background.

The plates in question are not a single colour."

NSW RTA echoed the same information. looks like this company is looking for a new market, perhaps they could sell them to primary school children, who may just like the designs.

    • +2

Well thats a bit of a bummer then…Just to let everyone know, i've received my set of these from them just last week. Not sure what else to do with them now i guess..

  • Got mine as well.
