  • Oh bugger, just bought something from Kogan three days ago. If I known about this I would have waited…

    oh well shit happens.

    cheers.

Probably saved money in the end since most of the films these days are crap anyway :)

You can get $10 movie tickets from Telstra if you have an account. But this is a good deal if you don't have a telstra account. I think entertainment book is like $11.70 a ticket.

      Optus has a similar offer.

Not to mention last I heard you could use an Aldi mobile number to access Telstra's movie offer.

BUPA members can also buy $10 movie tickets for Event, Birch Carroll & Coyle, Greater Union & Village, and Hoyts, but you have to buy a minimum of four at a time and they have a six month expiry date:

For some reason the website above says 'up to 25% dicount' which would suggest something around the $15 mark for a $19 ticket, but they were $10 each when I went to pay. Also there wasn't an admin or booking fee, which was welcoming. Trouble is I bought four tickets five months ago, have two left still, and there isn't a single movie at the cinema which you could pay me to see, but they expire in two weeks.

One problem I have with these '2 for 1' tickets is that at the cinema they then charge an extra $3 for VMAX sessions and $4 for 3D sessions, so last time I bought '2 for 1' tickets two for $20, I ended up having to pay an extra $14 so it cost me $34 anyway. Normal price was $26 ($19+3+4) so $34 certainly isn't half price. Maybe that's why the website above says 'up to 25% discount' so people don't then complain after they have to pay more for some sessions.

EDIT: Just checked my remaining tickets, they also can't be used after 5pm Saturday. Something to take into consideration!

        • there isn't a single movie at the cinema which you could pay me to see, but they expire in two weeks.

I'd recommend Captain Phillips and Prisoners.

  • As mentioned above, Telstra Movie Tickets is a better option and you can register account with a prepaid sim…

  • You dont even need a prepaid account. You can register more then 1 time on same telstra number

I believe they sell the tickets are $19 each plus a $2 something admin FEE! Read the small print

      which the op made clear

      • Which wasn't clear when I posted my comment. It is apparently okay for Ozbargainers to neg people now when they are simply trying to HELP.

Same as the ING deal.. They sent me a card which i never used..
Telstra, Optus, Bupa and many others offer the standard $10.50 tickets..

  • Kogan doesn't have the 5 pm restriction on Saturdays for Village Cinemas unlike the Telstra deal. Might be beneficial for some.

      • You are right. My apologies. I read it off their main site where it didn't have it mentioned,

"The Movie Pass can be used once per day and Movie Vouchers cannot be used at movie sessions which start after 5pm on Saturday at Event Cinemas, Greater Union or Birch Carroll & Coyle cinemas. At independent cinemas, Movie Vouchers may be used at any time of day, including after 5pm on Saturdays."

  • Do the tickets have to be booked online or can you bypass the admin fee?

Is the admin fee to Kogan or to the cinema?

  • Cheapest thing on Kogan $10 http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/hdmi-cable-1-2m-gold-plated/
    It's about to get ozbargained!

    • Not really. You can just get a $2 telstra sim and get $10 village cinema tickets.

      • Can it be a prepaid sim?

  • So in lay man's language i need to pay only $2.50 to get the tickets after purchasing through paypal from kogan?

    i am confused!!!

$19 to go to the movies nowadays! - any wonder we all used to use isohunt before it closed down :(

    • Attendance at cinemas have stayed fairly level for a long period of time so the cinemas have no incentive not to raise prices. When they can raise prices and attendance stays flat they're better off financially, not to mention they now cry poor and keep bumping up the cost of food and drink. They also make a small fortune if they have arcade games and they also get paid for previews (which cinemas are currently trying to get more from by reducing the amount of time each preview gets and charging the same amount of money).

    • The social experience of going to the movies with your friends can't be replicated on isohunt watching at home on a small screen. As well as having to wait for it to release unless you can accept CAM movies.

If anything, it's the video rental stores that are hit hardest, and not just by piracy by legal streaming on demand also.

You still have video stores in your area? All I've got locally are DVD vending machine kiosks, don't just blame streaming though they priced themselves out of the market. $5.95 to rent a movie overnight when you can buy it from JB for $20. I never understood why anyone went there.

        • The video stores can't get them for $20 as they have to pay a premium on the income they earn from renting it. Several years ago this was around $120 per DVD so they have to rent it around 24 times before they break even.

        • There is a Video EZY near my house. New release movies are $3.95. On Monday to Wednesday renting a new release, you also get 2 free weeklies to go with it. That's not a bad deal.

You are right that several of them closed down over the years though.

People rent because not everyone wants to own every movie they watch, especially if they haven't seen it before and don't know if it's worth buying or not, so I'd rather pay $6 than $20 unless I'm certain it's going to be a good movie worth keeping and rewatching.

Well that explains why they're dead then. They're getting ripped off. The business model is not tenable.

        • My understanding is that initially when DVDs were being introduced, the studios tried to discriminate against video stores by maintaining the very high price of DVDs as was the case with video tapes. A video tape of a new release movie was somewhere in the vicinity of $100.

I am pretty sure that the video stores now buy at the same price as everyone else, after challenging that kind of unscrupulous profiteering.

        • Even crazier when you can buy a rental/resale version from amazon for the same price or just over the normal price.

  • So what is the process to get $10 movie tickets if I but a $2 Prepaid Telstra SIM….Thanks!

  • first time poster here. There is a company who seem to specialize in providing this offer to other companies - I've seen it quite a few times now and have access to the offer through my Insurance company. My wife and I go to the cinema for $21 basically, instead of paying $38. We take our own M&M's too, so going to the movies is well cheap! I'd recommend Captain Phillips btw :)

  • Has anyone had their 2 for 1 movie ticket thing?
It's been 2 weeks and I've had nothing.
