  • This is a pretty good deal! Even when the D3000 and D3100 were the current model, they were never this cheap (I don't think). If I were in the market for sub $500 DSLR, I'd buy straight away. Only wishing for the twin lens kit though.

  • +1

10% off for Woollies staff this weekend too.

  • Good deal. Looking for one of these.

  • Great find, thanks OP. Any idea what time the sale price usually kicks in? Midnight or 8/9am/etc?

    • I think they do in the morning not in midnight.

    • fyi looks like the sale pricing is updated now for online orders

Got this from last JB Hifi trade-in (an Officeworks disposable camera) deal for $415. Great at what it does (pointing at things and clicking on A or S, or P at night). Have given it to the missus with those exact instructions, she loves it. Constantly heckles me to get her new lenses, and a flashgun. Only accessory I've bought for it is the Nikon wifi adaptor so she can transfer her pics wirelessly to her iPhone where she then proceeds to Facebook and Instagram the shit out of what she's taken, amassing many likes and thus inflating her need for validation by her peers.

    • Another cool story bro by Esq.

      Great story bro.

    • +2

Get her the 35mm F1.8 DX and she will be a happy woman - only a couple of hundred bucks (cheaper than any decent flash unit).

  • I'm a photography novice and am currently in the market for a new camera after my last one went for a dive while feeding the sharks at Port Stephens :(

Have never owned a SLR before. Last camera was a Sony HX9V.

    Is this a good bargain ? Is this a end-of-line model ?

Do you have to use it with the supplied lens(es) ? I don't think I will be migrating to using lenses anytime soon !
Any TAFE courses for beginners ?

    • +2

It's a good price imo, great if you can get further $10 off. Shops still sell the D3100 which is apparently a great beginner's camera, and this being a newer model for a similar (if not lower) price is awesome.

Don't know much about lenses, but I assume any Nikon lens should work, and other brand lens should work with a converter. But yes, you do have to have the lens.

Also, this model won't leave you to go diving and never come back.

Is this a better camera than the Canon 1100D or Canon 600D?

        • +1

Better sensor 12MP vs 24MP and a couple of other minor areas.

          http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-1100D-vs-Nikon-D3200

        • Better than the 1100D. Subjectively better than the 600D (600D will have more features, but the sensor in the D3200 is probably better). Remember, when you buy an SLR you're not just buying a camera, you're buying into a system (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, M4/3, etc). Any lenses or (most) accessories you buy for your camera will be compatible if you upgrade to another camera on the same system. If you accumulate a lot of gear then it can be daunting to change systems, so it's best to choose the one that suits you best to start with.

That said, as a beginner all of the entry level cameras will do you well.

        • Swapped my 1100D for the D3200 after about a month of the Canon. I find it to be a much better camera, dynamic range and sensor resolution were major factors to me. Both good entry-level cameras. Nikon's tend to have cheap good quality short primes as well, such as the 35mm 1.8 DX and the 50mm f1.8, while I have found that you get a better deal with Canon's zooms.

    • Go with the 3200 and learn from these gentlemen:

I would also advise spending not a whole lot on a "Nikkor 35mm 1.8 DX lens" for a couple of hundred. You may not understand why at the moment, but if you keep at the photography, it will become very clear to you and it will be your favourite lens over your kit zoom lens by far!

  • I wonder if this applies.

    • Just tried entering XMASEDM40 at checkout and following message comes up:

We're sorry but we were unable to validate your Promotional voucher code. Please check your code and re-enter if incorrect. If there is still an issue, please contact our Customer Support team on 1300 244 999

Do you have to be logged in to apply this code ?

      • I have no idea. Maybe worth a try.

OK, just read a few reviews of this camera ……

It was released in around April last year. Its replacement, the Nikon D3300, will be released sometime early next year. So D3200 is still a current model.

The camera is highly recommended for beginners, especially as a DSLR for beginners. The only gripe they mentioned about this camera is the motor noise when using auto-focus during shooting video. There's ways around it though from what I could gather reading the reviews - using manual focus, or external mic, or the lens.

Might go on a hunt for this cam tomorrow. Probably will have to go to one of the other stores to have a look and feel of it because Big W may not have it on display. Might even ask Bing Lee if they will price match.

    • AF motor noise is a common issue amongst low level lenses without things like ultrasonic motors (or silent wave motors as they're called in Nikon land) that are found on more expensive lenses.

Canon developed stepping motors to combat this in their lower level lenses but Nikon have yet to do similar.

But personally, if someone was getting a DSLR, it ought to primarily be for still photos rather than video. One would probably get better video performance out of a mirrorless system if they wanted interchangable lenses.

The other point to note for anyone wanting to really get into DSLR photography… the D3200 won't AF with some Nikon lenses that don't have a focus motor. Most newer lenses won't have this issue but if you want a particular older lens that doesn't have it's own focus motor, the D3200 doesn't have the screwdrive motor in the body to AF with these lenses.

      • The USM motors still make noise, just less. The STM motors are scarily silent.

What's the lowest level Nikon you can buy with a focussing motor? The D7000? D600? It's a big jump in price and not really an issue that most people will run into.

  • Cant order online now, looks like instore only

  • Which is better- this or the equivalent canon DSLR?

    • +1

Both pretty much the same. The 3200 hs a slight edge and, given this deal, is apparently much better value, but if you prefer using Canon, use Canon.

I'm at big w now, and just found out that only the color red is available.

    I was expecting black…

DSLRs can only be black seriously.

  • Just called Big W team online and the guy told me that they have ran out of stock online. He said more stock won't be uploaded until after the sale.

    • Also called all stores in SA and all only have a couple left and it's only in Red :-(

  • I wish I could find one tomorrow. Thanks OP nice find.

Can we price match with any other sellers in Sydney?

    • +1

      Try Bing Lee online

  • +1

Myer and David Jones do not sell this exact model so can't price match. They only sell the one with the Twin Lens Kit for about $1000.

Harvey Norman can't price match (cheapest is $620)
Bing Lee came in at $610 with delivery

The only ones that will price match is JB Hifi and most only have them in Black :D

  • +1

Harvey Norman can't price match (cheapest is $620)

Why can't they ? Did they refuse ?

With Bing Lee, you have to call this number: 1300 980 399
They only pricematch via their website.

Here is a list of all Nikon Authorised dealers:

    http://imgur.com/TiwdyRE

Plus the usual suspects, Paxtons, Teds & GG

    • The 2 Harvey Norman stores I called said it's below cost.

I did call Bing Lee and they said that it's already on sale and can only do it $610.

      • Also Teds would only go low $600 too

      • If they advertise a price match guarantee then it doesn't matter if it's below cost, presumably bigw are selling at pretty close to cost as well.

        • Tried JB City.. they said they cannot price match out of stock products but JB Macquarie Price matched without issues.. I showed them the catalogue instead! :)

  • Just grabbed one at JB Frankston. No problems at all with the price match. Thanks OP.
Tried to call the Karingal Big W before I went to JB and was told they are only taking messages for the camera dept. because they are so busy!

  • Picked one up.
Also tried GG and Bing Lee for price match. None of them came even close to Big W price with their best offer

  • 2 on Hold since 9 am this morning .. Not sure how I feel about red tgough.. Hmmmmmm!

  • its a pretty darn good price.
that would be way below cost for most retailers, wonder if bigw is losing money on em? or just trying to get rid of excess stock?

  • +1

9am, walked into BIG W Top Ryde , found that all three are red.
staff called BIG W Macquarie for me and all are red again. then called BIG W Auburn,"sorry, all've gone".
So I tried the JB next door, ask for price match and black. Bingo! I got a black one before 10am.
I would like to suggest you trying at your local JB for same price and black. — hurry

  • All of my spend today …

    http://imgur.com/4sbnWzC

    Damn you OzB !

    • Reason why you got the red? Called few stores only have red. Look like I might grab one too

      • Big W only have red in stock for the special

  • Went to pick one up at Phoenix Park this morning at 8am only to find someone had ram raided the shopping centre overnight and everything was in lock down while forensics went through the place. They still had a few in stock when I went in later in the morning so all good though.

  • How does the D3200 compare with the Nikon D5100? Reading reviews online and only getting more confused…

    • 3200 has a newer processor, more megapixesla dn the same amount of AF points. thats basically all i can see, but 5100 has the flipout screen, thats pretty handy :"D

  • TL;DR version of stats tables:

5200 - Marginally better resolution photos due to improved sensor size, has a flip screen (useless imo), marginally better in low light (higher ISO sensitivity) and it's about 55 grams heavier.

Those are all the differences from the 3200 - make what you will of that.

  • My wife just bought the d3200-black price beaten by JB Werribee. She got it for $490. Minus $50 cash back brings it down to $440. Looking forward to having a fiddle tonight.

Salesperson admitted it was below his cost price.

  • Wow ! Cash back claim approved !! 3 days
Now to wait for $50 to show up in bank account !
